WARSHIP PICTORIAL #40 USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22
Book Type: S,O, by Steve Wiper, Photo history of the US Navy's first "Night Operations" aircraft carrier. Built on the hull of the Cleveland class cruisers, the Independence was the class leader of the US Navy's new type of "Light Fleet Carrier." Beginning operations in late 1943 against Imperial Japan in the Pacific War, she would serve with distinction throughout the war. CVL-22 took part in all of the major campaigns in the later half of the war in the Pacific Ocean, including the Battles of Leyte Gulf. After the war's end, she was one of the target vessels in the test fleet at the Bikini Atoll for Operation Crossroads. Surviving that, she was finally sunk of the California coast in 1951. This book contains 77 black & white and 4 color photos as well as a color illustration of her Measure 32 "Dazzle" camouflage within the covers of this 72 page softbound book. ![]() |
