16. THOSE OTHER EAGLSE (A COMPANION TO ACES HIGH
Christopher Shores, C,O-
This massive, extensively researched volume is an indispensable companion to the eminent historian Christopher Shores’ other seminal work (with Clive Williams), Aces High, Volumes one and two. This completely new book follows the same format as the author now turns his attention to those claiming between two and four. Why this number? Because a single score could have been a fluke, whereas achieving more, points towards the potential skill and virtuosity of a fighter pilot, offering the promise of a higher total if the opportunity arose - and this is the nub of the matter. A fair majority of these men would have shot down many more enemy aircraft if the theatre of operations and timing had been right. Nevertheless there are numerous illustrious and familiar names within these pages; people like Neil Cameron, Guy Gibson, Tom Gleave, Pat Hancock, Micky Martin, David Morgan, Rene Mouchotte, Jeffrey Quill, Fred Rosier, Whitney Straight, Peter Twiss, Geoffrey Wellum, and so many more, a great majority of whom lived fascinating lives in and out of the service. There are nearly 1800 entries and as many of the pilots are illustrated as is possible.

rugged P-47 Thunderbolts nearly at ground level, the pilots of the Ninth Air
Force strafed and dive-bombed bridges, rail yards, supply depots, troops, and
tanks, these were the most dangerous of air operations, exacting heavy
casualties. The author flew 70 such missions and links his daily experiences
with events in the wider European theater. Combining anecdotes from his
personal diary, research in U.S. and German records, and interviews from

of the air war in Europe,

WAR PRIZES: THE ALBUM
Phil Butler S,O
First published in 1994 and in print virtually ever since, War Prizes was an illustrated history of the German, Italian, and Japanese aircraft brought to Allied countries after World War II for testing and evaluation. Wide ranges of airplanes were covered in the book including civil aircraft and sailplanes as well as military types. The only drawback with War Prizes was that because it was providing a detailed narrative of the testing and evaluation programs, the space that could be devoted to the photographs was limited. War Prizes: The Album illustrates in much greater depth the aircraft types featured in the original volume. It has photographs of each type in the markings of the Allied countries that operated them. One aspect of the subject that will have notably better coverage in this book is that of Axis aircraft which found their way into Russian hands. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union a lot more material has become available. The majority of the photos that appear in this book were not published in the earlier book. 297 black & white and 63 color photos

Steve, Darlow, C,

occupied countries. The author details all raids against flying bomb targets
and also covers raids against other German secret weapons. The story is told using fascinating photographic coverage, previously unpublished records, accounts provided by Bomber Command veterans,
Luftwaffe night fighter veterans and accounts from French people who witnessed the whole German operation. from the construction of the secret weapon installations to the launching of the flying bombs.

230. PATTON'S AIR FORCE: FORGING A LEGENDARY AIR-GROUND TEAM
David Spires, C,
this book is a case study of one air-ground team's experience of tactical air power employed during the
climactic WWII campaigns against he forces of Germany. From the time Patton's Third Army became operational on August 1, 1944 until the end of the war, Patton's troops covered more ground and took more enemy prisoners than any other Allied army in northwest Europe. Brig. Gen. Otto Weyland's XIX Tactical Air Command provided air support every step of the way. Their combined success is something of an anomaly; air-ground relationships are notoriously confrontational and plagued with interservice competition. How did Patton and Weyland work together to achieve such astounding success is the core of this book. Spires finds that this success was due to four key
developments; the maturation of tactical aviation doctrine, effective organizational procedures, a
technical revolution in equipment, and, above all, the presence of pragmatic men of goodwill who made the system work. This collaboration extended all the way down the chain of command. A brilliant study that is illustrated and features many three color maps.

280. THE FLEET AIR ARM HANDBOOKS 1939-1945
David Wragg, C,O,
The Fleet Air Arm Handbook 1939-45 is the only comprehensive review available of the Royal Navy's air power during the war years. Starting with a brief history of British naval aviation before the Second World War, the book progresses with a full war diary of all of the major operations, the carriers and aircraft, and the amazing crews involved. Biographical accounts of the major commanders give an insight into what it was like to work as part of the Fleet Air Arm during the war, and a glimpse of their characters. Many airmen were trained by the Navy to save money; other costs were cut by building the essentially strong and needed carriers to much weaker merchant shipping standards. But these light carriers were to become a success; and the rapid expansion of the Fleet Air Arm was one of the major achievements of the war. The author provides a detailed look at the aircraft, squadrons, naval air stations and aircraft carriers, battleships and cruisers. The enthusiast will find excitement in knowing what uniforms were worn by the men, their insignia and examples of flying kit. And how did the carrier force fit in with the rest of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, what was the relationship like at sea between aircrew and their shipmates aboard the RN's carriers?

TO WAR WITH THE YOXFORD BOYS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE 357TH FIGHTER GROUP
Merle Olmsted, C,O,
This book covers the forming of the group, the training days, combat in Europe, Post WWII Legacy and the present-day Warbirds who draw their inspiration from the 357th! Through the use of several hundred, many rare, unpublished photos and dozens of color profiles, the story about the pilots, the planes, the ground crews of many trades and the military unit that gave them cohesion making them an outstanding team, the complete story of the 357th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, is told. As the official historian for the 357th and a dedicated history buff, author Merle Olmsted has been associated with and written about fighter pilots and ‘his group’ for some fifty years. Included are listings from the official documents tallying the group’s accomplishments. Utilizing mission reports, monthly statistical and operational reports, the pilot’s individual encounter reports, the Missing Air Crew Reports, USAAF accident reports and the British police repots on accidents among other information-laden personal notes, books, and articles plus the original 357th Group records on file at the Air Force Historical Archives, Olmsted weaves together the many stories, comments , incidents and hairy tales of the 357th FG. The book also features 43 full color profiles by Thomas A. Tullis. TO WAR WITH THE YOXFORD BOYS is the final, ‘super’ book on the 357th. This is one of the few truly complete histories of a World War II Mustang group that has ever been written! A beautifully produced book, no expense was seemingly spared in its production.

287. HURRICANES OVER SINGAPORE: RAF, RNZAF AND NEI FIGHTERS IN ACTION AGAINST THE JAPANESE OVER THE ISLAND AND THE NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES, 1942
Brian Cull, C,
Hurricanes over Singapore is the companion volume to the successful Buffaloes over Singapore published in 2003. It continues the story of the RAF’s gallant but futile attempt to stop the might of the Japanese invasion force in its quest to conquer not only Singapore, but also Sumatra and Java and all the other islands that constituted the Netherlands East Indies. The Hurricanes went into action over Singapore on 20 January 1942 and the last two aircraft made the final flight at Java on 8 March that year. During the intervening time the Hurricane pilots and ground crew – British, New Zealanders, Australians, Canadians, Dutch and Americans – gave their all, with many making the supreme sacrifice. The majority of survivors would spend the next 3 ½ years as prisoners of the Japanese – and some of their heart-rending stories are detailed here. This expertly researched account, the most comprehensive to date, and accompanied by rare photographs, is told wherever possible by the pilots themselves, the majority of whom were young and inexperienced.

299. 13TH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WWII
William Wolf, C,O,
In the savage air combat over Guadalcanal and then the equally bloody air battles up Solomon chain, New Georgia and Bougainville, 13th Fighter Command took a back seat to Marine aviation in personnel, equipment, supply, operations, and publicity. In the air the names of Marine aces such as Joe Foss and Pappy Boyington are deservedly well known and their F4F Wildcats and the F4U Corsairs are famous as Zero killers. But untold is the contribution of the squadrons of the Army Air Force during this time. Wolf’s definitive book brings to light the 13th Fighter Command’s significant contributions to winning the air war in the South Pacific. Its squadrons scored 527.5 victories and boasted twenty-one unheralded aces such as Bob Westbrook with twenty victories and Bill Harris with 15.5 victories and three aces who scored five victories in a day. The mystery of the controversial Yamamoto Mission, the greatest fighter mission of all time, receives a new perspective and is revealed at last. Wolf’s book also goes beyond his extensive descriptions of combat and strategy and examines the human side of the battles and often grim everyday living conditions through numerous interviews and narratives. over 400 b/w photos, color aircraft profiles

301. DOUGLAS HAVOC AND BOSTON - THE DB-7/A SERIES
Scott Thompson, C,O,
The Douglas DB-7 was an advanced attack bomber developed in the late 1930s. Though developed for the US Army Air Corps, the sleek DB-7 was first built for the French government. After the fall of France the remaining production of French DB-7s went instead to the RAF. The DB-7 flew as the Boston for the RAF and Britain purchased hundreds more directly from the Douglas Aircraft Company. The US Army Air Corps placed a production contract in 1939, ordering the plane as the A-20 Havoc. When the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor came, the A-20 was among the most capable aircraft in the US inventory. It went on to serve with the US Ninth Air Force in Europe and the Fifth Air Force in the South Pacific.

302. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE
Ken Delve, C,O,
Operation ‘Overlord’ – the allied invasion of occupied France – began in the opening minutes of 6 June 1944. By the end of the day a bridgehead had been won and gradually the Allied Forces extended their grip. None of this would have been possible without air power.
In the weeks and months leading up to D-Day the RAF and USAAF waged a concerted campaign against fighter bases, troop depots, road and rail junctions and ammunition and fuel dumps: any target that would impede the Germans’ ability to repel the liberating forces.
This book – the product of detailed research in original documents – tells the story of this air campaign, with the aid of nearly 200 archive photographs.

303. BOMBER BOYS: AIRCREW EXPERIENCES OF THE WAR OVER OCCUPIED EUROPE, 1942-1945
Mel Rolfe, C,
Three weeks after Stirling air gunner Doug Fry was reported missing over Germany his mother was still clinging to the vain hope that he was alive. Then a neighbour said she had seen him in the cinema just down the road. The airman and his crew had been filmed for a Bomber Command documentary shortly before they took off from Mildenhall to attack Remscheid. Three hours later four of the crew were killed, but it was another two months after she had also seen the poignant film that widowed mother of eight Winnie Fry knew her nineteen-year-old son, though wounded, was still alive. Lancaster pilot Victor Wood’s aircraft arrived too early over Gelsenkirchen when the target was shrouded in darkness and the Main Force was miles behind. His 12 Squadron bomber was suddenly struck with terrifying force by flak and turned upside-down. An engine was on fire, the unconscious mid-upper gunner, slumped in his turret, was being sprayed with petrol and their bomb-load had been struck by shrapnel. Could Vic Wood get his crew back to base safely? These are just two of twenty dramatic stories from Bomber Command by Mel Rolfe, which is contained in Bomber Boys. Night after night, the young men, some just out of school, went off on sorties, having pushed to the back of their minds the unpalatable awareness that they might never see another dawn. If death did not find them on the first few terrifying sorties they grew up very quickly in order to fight another day.

304. WOLFPACK WARRIORS: THE STORY OF WWII'S MOST SUCCESSFUL FIGHTER UNIT
Roger Freeman, C,
The 56th Fighter Group, or Zemke’s Wolfpack as they became known, more than any other, led the way and at the end of hostilities had the highest score of enemy aircraft shot down as well as having produced the top American fighter aces of the conflict. This is an account of why and how this famous unit became so successful and the way in which its ethos and spirit was forged. Although following a chronological path of training and operations, this book is not a dedicated unit history, the narrative being primarily concerned with the personnel, both pilots and ground crew. Some one hundred veterans have been contacted by the author over the past ten years of his research and many of their recollections and photographs are woven into the story, reflecting in candid fashion the thoughts and actions of the young fighting men of this ground-breaking unit.

AIR FORCE
Martin Bowman, S,O,
Unique among books about the B-17 this volume seeks to show the units that operated it rather than the ‘nuts and bolts’ view usually given. Following in the footsteps of the previous titles in the In Focus series, this visual history of the B-17 makes spectacular use of over 300 high quality wartime images, many previously unpublished, to illustrate each group in turn. Extended captions, details of bases, marks of aircraft used and code letters complete a visually stunning tribute to the 8th Airforce’s famous Bomber. The photographs are mainly presented in large formats, giving modellers the chance to examine the details easily, and the high quality gloss finish paper aids the high definition reproduction. Eight pages of colour side views and photos are included along with a useful guide to the colourful tail markings carried towards the end of the war.

313. BRITAIN'S FLEET AIR ARM
Ron Mackay, C,O,
The ‘Air Branch’ of the Royal Navy that was to carve its name into maritime history as the Fleet Air Arm faced an ‘orphan’ existence up to 1937 when the Admiralty, having handed over control in 1918 to the RAF, resumed charge of its aviators. The Force was poorly equipped and dangerously short of qualified personnel with which to effectively challenge its Axis adversaries, and suffered accordingly in the initial stages of World War II. The provision of superior carrier aircraft designs (primarily from the U.S. Grumman and Chance-Vought companies), and a similar whole-sale expansion in Fleet and Escort carriers (most of the latter supplied from American shipyards), as well as the personnel with which to operate the warships and aircraft ensured that by 1943 the Fleet Air Arm was an all-round, efficient Force capable of independent combat operations in all the major War Zones right up to VJ-Day. 314. BRISTOL BEAUFIGHTER
Jerry Scutts, C,O,
Developed from the unloved Bristol Beaufort, the Beaufighter was the RAF’s first purpose-built night fighter. Powered by two Bristol Hercules radial engines, it had a reputation for being one of the most difficult to fly, yet most effective, aircraft in the RAF’s armoury in the first years of World War Two. Used extensively in Europe, the Beaufighter also flew with distinction in the South East Asian theatre, and with several foreign air forces. Whether hunting night bombers, hauling rockets to devastate shipping or peacefully tramping post-war skies towing targets, the Beaufighter rarely failed. This book is respectfully dedicated to all those who flew that extraordinary aeroplane.

SPITIFIRES AND YELLOW MUSTANGS: THE 52ND FIGHTER GROUP IN WORLD WAR II
Tom Ivie, C,O,
The USAAF 52nd Fighter Group enjoyed an outstanding record in World War II, but to date its story has never been told. Activated in January 1941, it moved to England in July 1942 for an assignment with the Eighth Air Force. It flew combat missions in Spitfires to France during the summer of 1942 before being reassigned to the invasion force attacking North Africa in November 1942. After moving to North Africa it was assigned to the Twelfth Air Force and was again equipped with Spitfires. As part of the Twelfth Air Force it flew combat missions in the Tunisian campaign, and during the invasion of Sicily. In mid-1944 the 52nd was reassigned to the Fifteenth Air Force and converted to P-51 Mustangs. During the remainder of the war it flew bomber escort and strafing missions to targets in Italy, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Rumania, and Yugoslavia. For its outstanding service the Group was twice awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation. During its long campaign the Group destroyed more than 425 enemy aircraft in aerial combat and damaged 135 plus many more on the ground. The 52nd Fighter Group produced 21 Aces. 300 plus b/w photos and colour artwork

319. THE AIR WAR FOR BURMA: THE ALLIED AIR FORCES FIGHT BACK IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA 1942-45
(the third and concluding volume of the Bloody Shambles Series
Christopher Shores, C,
In his monumental work Bloody Shambles, Volume Two, Christopher Shores described in detail the British retreat out of Burma, culminating at the end of May 1942. The monsoon then brought operations on land and in the air virtually to a halt for several months as the British and Indian forces prepared to retake Burma.
The Japanese however, had very different ideas. Air War for Burma picks up the story from the beginning of June 1942 and follows the hard-fought campaigns through to the end of the war in August 1945. Here the activities of the RAF and USAAF during the desperate fighting of 1942-44, resulting ultimately in victories at Imphal and Kohima, are fully recounted. No less a forgotten air force than was the 14th 'Forgotten Army', the RAF particularly was denied the most modern and effective aircraft until late in the fighting, struggling to survive with obsolescent equipment against frequently superior Japanese machines. Described herein are the operations during the First and Second Arakan Campaigns; support for the Chindits in their long-range penetrations deep into enemy-held territory; the savage sieges of Imphal and Kohima; and the final victorious advance across the plains of Central Burma to Mandalay and Rangoon. Detailed also are the activities over the Indian Ocean and the East Indies of the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers and the aircrews of the Fleet Air Arm. Painstakingly researched from official sources, log books, letters and interviews, this is far and away the best reference work on the subject, and completes the set.

320. TON-UP LANCS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE THIRTY FIVE RAF LANCASTERS THAT EACH COMPLETED ONE HUNDRED SORTIES
Norman Franks, C,O-
As most authors of factual books discover, information continues to come in after their books have been published. When Arms and Armour began a series under the heading of 'Claims to Fame' the first was 'The Lancaster', by well known aviation author and historian Norman Franks. In the event the series only embraced two books, but over the last decade Norman has continued to research and has received more information on the 34 Lancasters covered, and in fact, that total is now 35. Rewritten with all the additional information collected, and with more photographs of the aircraft and then men who flew in these very special Avro Lancasters, Grub Street has decided to reprint the book in a new-size format, to coincide with the 60th anniversary of VE Day. Each Lancaster's history is recorded, supported by stories from aircrew members that flew in these veteran aircraft, along with what happened to them once or if - they had survived.
These controversies can also be explained by the detailed listing of each raid these 35 Lancasters flew during 1942-1945, together with the names of the pilot and crew that took them on bomber sorties all over Hitler's Third Reich, Northern Italy, during support missions before and after D-Day in June 1944 as well at attacking V1 rocket launch sites situated in Northern France. The book covers in detail how the research was carried out, the pitfalls that were encountered as well as a well-balanced view from one of the Lancaster's former Skippers on what it was like to fly a bomber tour of operations in Bomber Command. Over 200 photographs of the aircraft and the men who flew in them. Many of these come from personal albums so have not been seen before.

321. BOMBER BOYS: THE RAF OFFENSIVE OF 1943
Kevin Wilson, C
A gripping account of the everyday heroism of British bomber crews in 1943 - the year when Bomber Command believed it could win WWII by bombing alone. In 1943 the RAF began a bombing campaign against Germany, the like of which had never before been seen. Over the next twelve months, tens of thousands of aircrews flew across the North Sea to drop their bombs on German cities. They were opposed not only by the full force of the Luftwaffe, but by a nightmare of flak, treacherously icy conditions, and constant mechanical malfunction. Most of these crews never finished their tour of operations but were either shot down and killed, or taken prisoner by an increasingly hostile enemy. This is the story of the everyday heroism of British bomber crews in the days when it was widely believed that the Allies could win the Second World War by bombing alone. Kevin Wilson has interviewed hundreds of former airmen about what their lives were like in 1943: the stomach-churning tension of flying repeatedly over hostile territory, the terror at being shot down or captured, and the peculiar mixture of guilt and pride at unleashing such devastation on Germany. Their stories are woven together here to form a comprehensive and gripping account of what it was like to be an airman at the height of the bomber war.

322. NO PLACE FOR CHIVALRY: RAF NIGHT FIGHTERS DEFEND THE EAST OF ENGLAND AGAINST THE GERMAN AIR FORCE IN THE TWO WORLD WARS
Alastair Goodrum, C,
Night fighting in the air is a devious and clandestine form of mortal combat. In the blackness of night, success goes to the resolute hunter who stalks his prey unseen, and strikes from behind, swiftly and mercilessly. A sudden burst of machine-gun or cannon fire into an opponent's belly often caught the enemy unprepared, obliterating men and machines in a hail of explosions. Chivalry had no place in the combats of the night sky. A corridor from The Wash to Birmingham was turned into a fierce battleground in two world wars. The air route from Germany and the occupied countries through this corridor, to targets right across the industrial heartland of England, became a three-dimensional combat zone that proved to be as grim a killing ground by night as anywhere else in the land. No Place for Chivalry encapsulates the story of the air defense of England against attack by night. By taking the area covered by RAF Wittering and Digby sectors, looking at the action of night fighter squadrons operating from those stations and their satellite airfields, the way the battle developed, its timeline of events, the events themselves and the organization of those involved, a coherent picture of how the night air defense of Britain evolved is formed. The narrative is pitched at a level of detail and with such human interest content that it enables readers not only to grasp what is happening and why but also to feel the tensions, frustrations and euphoria of success that the aircrews felt at the time. The reader gets a view from the cockpit or gun turret, to 'meet' and 'fly' with the men of both sides who fought in the air at night - men whose moral standards on the ground were above reproach but, when fighting in the night sky, gave no quarter.

SPITFIRES OVER MALTA: THE EPIC AIR BATTLES OF 1942
Brian Cull, C,
This book tells the story of the RAF's gallant stand in 1942 to hold Malta against all odds and to save the island from invasion, which, had it happened could have changed the whole course of the war in the Middle East. Between March and October 1942, some 400 Spitfires reached the beleaguered island, flown mainly from the decks of aircraft carriers that had ventured at great risk into the hostile waters of the Mediterranean. Once established on the three bombed-scarred airfields of Luqa, Takali and Hal Far, the Spitfires flew daily sorties to repel the might of the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica based in Sicily, just 60 miles away. The cost was high. Very few of the Spitfires survived more than a few weeks, sometimes only days. Moreover, almost 100 Spitfire pilots paid the supreme price, young men from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Rhodesia, together with volunteers from the United States serving with the RAF or RCAF. At times the fighting was intense. In April 1942, Malta suffered a greater tonnage of bombs than the UK did in any one month at the height of the Battle of Britain. More than 1,000 Maltese civilians lost their lives in 1942. But the sacrifice was not in vain. Malta held out and finally the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica conceded the battle was lost with Malta's Spitfire pilots being credited with at least 600 aerial victories during this period. Told in true Brian Cull style, this well-researched, well-written and very detailed book is accompanied by rare photos and contains much new material, especially from the logbooks and diaries of the pilots themselves.

BOEING B-29 SUPERFORTRESS: THE ULTIMATE LOOK FROM DRAWING BOARD TO VJ-DAY
William Wolf, C,O,
Although many books have been published about the B-29, none has been an in-depth look, with most being either superficial pictorials or focusing on the bombing campaigns, particularly the incendiary attacks and atomic bombings. This book, using rare, previously unexplored sources, intends to provide the definitive look at the bomber and crew, detailing every facet for the air enthusiast, historian and modeler. The author was granted rare access to the Pima Air & Space Museum’s restored B-29 “Sentimental Journey” for inspection and photography, resulting in the most extensive photographic documentation of the B-29 ever published. The Pima Museum’s archives, filled with B-29 technical and crew manuals also gave the author extensive information that had not been previously published. These sources, the author’s extensive personal library, and microfilm resources enabled the author to produce this comprehensive look at the bomber and its crew in the context of the bomber’s development and operational use. It is truly monumental in scope, both in words and photos. over 500 b/w and color photographs

THE 467TH BOMBARDMENT GROUP (H) IN WORLD WAR II: IN COMBAT WITH THE B-24 LIBERATOR OVER EUROPE
Perry Watts, C,O,
In this new 8th Air Force unit history, Perry Watts sets out the history of the USAAF 467th Heavy Bombardment Group, which was based at Rackheath, Norfolk, in the east of England, during 1944-1945. In contrast to the operational focus of many books on the USAAF in the period, the author presents the B-24 Liberator Group’s story as a seamless whole. The main feature of this work lies in its usage of a wealth of primary sources, ranging from contemporaries’ diaries and notes of airmen of every rank from private to deputy base commander, to USAAF official records of incidents and occurrences in the line of duty. To date, many of the works on this subject have relied on secondary borrowing or hearsay – this book lets the men who were there speak for themselves with their own voices. Yet while offering direct access to their experience, it also is unafraid to note ambiguities in accounts where these should be noted and to present all available information to enable the readers to decide for themselves. over 475 b/w photographs

Over the years the B-32 has been described only in a small number of magazine articles and in a booklet that have generally given a superficial and incomplete account, maligning the bomber, fairly or not, as a mediocre design besieged with developmental problems and a lackluster combat record. Consolidated B-32 Dominator - The Ultimate Look: from Drawing Board to Scrapyard is the definitive description and appraisal of this neglected bomber’s development, testing, manufacture, and combat experience. The author used company design and production information, flight and test evaluations, along with previously unexplored Flight Manuals and Consolidated-Vultee Erection and Maintenance Manuals. From rare microfilm of original material and insights and personal narratives of the personnel involved, Wolf has gathered information on the pre-combat testing and all the combat missions of the bomber in the Pacific. Over 400 b/w photographs, drawings. By the same author of the excellent definitive study of the B-29 Superfortress.

331. THE SKY SCORPIONS: THE STORY OF THE 389TH BOMB GROUP IN WWII
Paul Wilson, C,O,
The 389 Bomb Group was unique among all Groups assigned to the 8th USAAF because it actually commenced operations in July 1943 out of North Africa that culminated in the infamous Ploesti mission on 1 August. After returning to England in September, the combat crews joined in on the grim duty of hammering Nazi Germany’s industrial resource. By April 1945, 321 missions had been flown during which over 17,000 tons of ordnance was dropped. The cost was 153 B-24s MIA or lost over England. Known as the “Sky Scorpions” from their detachment in North Africa, the Hethel-based unit also provided the initial numbers of PFF-equipped aircraft for the 2nd Bomb Division. 365TH FIGHTER SQUADRON IN WORLD WAR II
Kent Miller, C,O,
The 365th Fighter Squadron was part of the much-traveled 358th Fighter Group. Beginning combat with the 8th Air Force, traded to the 9th Air Force, and later assigned to the First Tactical Air Force, the 365th flew from bases in England, France, and ultimately Germany itself. As with many tactically oriented outfits, the squadron did not run up a huge score against enemy aircraft, yet, claims from strafing and bombing of a multitude of targets were impressive. This book presents the 365th’s day-to-day operations and is interspersed with quotes from the group and squadron records, Missing Aircrew Reports, and the men themselves. In addition, an exhaustive appendix and nearly two hundred photographs give readers a look into the combat activities of this long overlooked Army Air Force unit. over 190 b/w photographs

335. FROM HULL, HELL AND HALIFAX: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF NO. 4 GROUP 1937 - 1948
Chris Blanchett, C,O,
First published in 1993, this history of Royal Air Force Bomber Command No.4 Group, which will be for ever associated with Yorkshire where it was based for eleven years from 1937 to 1948, has been unavailable for many years. The core of the book focuses on the tremendous efforts made by the squadrons of No.4 Group during the World War Two. Backed by hard working and loyal ground crew, night after night, many hundreds of brave young men flew off into the unknown in Whitleys, Wellingtons and Halifaxes to bring retribution to the Third Reich. Aircraft from No.4 Group were the first to fly over Berlin, much to the embarrassment of Goering. They were also the first to bomb Italy. The casualty rate was horrific, especially in the early years of the war when a bomber crew rarely completed a full tour of thirty operations. This long-overdue reprint of a classic work on the history and operations of No.4 Group will be welcomed by those who missed the book when it first appeared. 330 black/white photographs and maps

THE PINEAPPLE AIR FORCE: PEARL HARBOR TO TOKYO
John Lambert, C,O,
4 Hawaiian Air Force met the attack of the Japanese on 7 December 1941. Redesignated the Seventh Air Force, its bomber units moved on to combat in the Pacific almost immediately. The Seventh Fighter Command, however, has held back to defend Oahu against air attacks that never came. The pilots of the fighter units frustrated at their static role, said that they were left guarding the pineapples. From the cadre of the original Hawaiian units they spawned two new fighter groups. Eventually, those fighter squadrons, a close-knit fraternity, began to garrison outlying island bases, and eventually saw combat in the Marshals-Gilberts, the Marianas. Finally toward war’s end, they were flying long-range missions against Japan from Ie Shima and Iwo Jima. The lieutenants of 1941 were the colonels of 1945, and some survivors served until the Japanese surrender. over 300 b/w and color photographs.

THE 8TH AIR FORCE: VICTORY AND SACRIFICE
John Lambert, C,O
The defeat of Germany was the first priority of the Allies in World War II. Japan would come later. The destruction of Germany’s vast military-industrial base was the mission assigned to the RAF and the U.S. Eighth Air Force. Starting from scratch in July 1942 and operating from bases in England, the Eighth Air Force assumed the task of daylight precision bombing of Occupied Europe. In a three-year struggle against fortifiable German air defenses and the legions of the Luftwaffe, the Eighth paid a terrible price. It suffered 55,000 casualties (killed, wounded and Prisoners of war), more than any other numbered U.S. military unit. This volume seeks to provide an historical perspective of the air campaign over Western Europe, utilizing 270 representative photos and detailed captions to depict the deadly nature of that aerial combat some six decades ago. over 270 b/w and color photographs, maps.

BATTLES WITH THE NACHTJAGD: THE NIGHT AIRWAR OVER EUROPE 1939-1945
Theo E.W. Boiten, C,O,
Battles of the Nachtjagd traces the parallel developments in RAF night-bombing and night-fighting in the Luftwaffe, from the pioneering efforts on both sides in this new form of airwar up to the climax of the strategic bombing offensive in 1945 and the simultaneous introduction of the Me 262 jet in the German night fighter arm. The authors have traced surviving aircrew from both sides and have succeeded in matching many Bomber Command losses to German night fighter claims. Above all this book is the gripping story of the German night fighter versus bomber war over the Third Reich 1941-1945. There are contributions from scores of veteran RAF and Commonwealth aircrew and their German adversaries, which shed new light on many aspects of the giant and deadly nocturnal battle over northwestern Europe. The narrative is extensively illustrated with more than 400 rare and mostly unpublished photographs from the personal collections of the veterans‚ wartime albums, which grippingly illustrate the strategic and tactical developments in this most deadly struggle. 341. THE BOEING XF8B-1 FIGHTER
Jared Zichek, C,O,
The Boeing XF8B-1 "Five-in-One" fighter was the last piston engine fighter built by Boeing and very nearly the last fighter built by the company until its merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997. Conceived in 1943, the XF8B-1 was unusual for a naval fighter in having an internal bomb bay, tremendous range, and counter-rotating propellers, the latter necessitated by its huge Pratt & Whitney R-4360 "Wasp Major" engine, a 28-cylinder air-cooled radial that produced a staggering 3,500 hp. An exhaustive account based on extensive research at the National Archives and Boeing Historical Archive, this book contains an authoritative text along with hundreds of rare photos, general arrangement drawings, color profiles, artist's impressions, and extensive extracts from the pilot's and maintenance manuals. SECRET PROJECTS: FLYING SAUCER AIRCRAFT
Bill Rose & Tony Buttler, C,O
Though there has been much speculation on whether flying saucers and the aliens who allegedly favor such craft have any basis in reality, it is a fact that over the years a variety of experimental aircraft that could be described as "flying saucer" types have been developed in different countries right here on earth. Such aircraft have invariably been shrouded in secrecy, and this book finally presents a serious factual study of these mysterious designs. This book covers 20 "flying saucer" and similar aircraft projects in detail, including the Vought V-173 Pancake, the Boeing B390, the German AS-6 and Focke Wulf VTOL saucer, and others. It also covers NASA's research into lenticular lifting body designs, lunar ferry systems, exotic lightship concepts and recent laser propulsion experiments. All of the craft featured in this book are on the cutting edge of aviation research and will appeal greatly to those fascinated by flying saucers and their sinister or conspirational connections. 149 black & white and 96 color photos plus over 200 drawings

DE HAVAILLAND MOSQUITO - AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY, VOLUME 2
Ian Thirsk, C,O
A private venture aircraft, the much-loved Mosquito was possibly the most versatile of all British aircraft of World War II. Revolutionary in its wood construction, the de Havilland Mosquito played a vital role in the war combining the manoeuverability of a fighter with the payload of a medium bomber. It contributed to the war as a fighter; an unarmed bomber, a reconnaissance aircraft and its different variants included the Sea Mosquito, the first British twin-engined aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. De Havilland Mosquito An Illustrated History Volume 2 traces the fascinating development of the Mosquito from its construction through to operational fighter and bomber in frontline, Operational Training, Ferry and Maintenance Units. Human stories of RAF aircrew, ground crew and AVAILABLE SUMMER 2006Commonwealth Air Forces are detailed in addition to coverage of the Mosquito operated by the Russians and that captured by the Luftwaffe. This volume is a comprehensive pictorial record of the Mosquito aircraft and the people who worked with and flew in her. Extended captions include performance tables, nose-art, advertising and a summary of preserved Mosquitoes. Aircraft numbers, specifications, dates, personalities, and background information coupled with over 600 black and white photographs, many previously unpublished and a colour section, make this and its best selling companion Mosquito An Illustrated History Volume 1 a must for researchers and historians alike. 345. KNIGHTS OF THE SKIES: ARMOUR PROTECTION FOR THE BRITISH FIGHTING AEROPLANES
Michael C. Fox, S,
In June 1940, Billy Drake was shot down in his Hurricane over France. A German cannon shell exploded behind his head, but he survived thanks to a sheet of armor. Had he been shot down a few weeks earlier he would have been killed, because armor was considered unnecessary. At the start of the First World War, armor had also been considered unnecessary, its weight reduced the performance of the underpowered aircraft too much, but some pilots and squadrons made and fitted their own protection. By 1918, the view of the Air Ministry had changed and it commissioned designs for an armored Trench Fighter that must have a fully armored cockpit. Lessons had been learned, but the price in pilots killed had been high. Between the wars, performance again became the primary concern and the lessons of the First War were forgotten. So it was that the Hurricane squadrons went to France with no rear armor; and no front armor either. Soon every RAF combat aircraft was fitted with armor, saving hundreds of lives. In this carefully researched book Michael Cox takes the reader through the development of aircraft armor from 1910 to 1945, using the stories of pilots to illustrate how vital it could be. The technology and aircraft design is also examined, with little known aircraft as the Sopwith Salamander and Farnborough Ram playing an important role.

346. CLASH OF EAGLES: USAAF 8TH AIR FORCE BOMBERS VERSUS THE LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR II
Martin W. Bowman, C
This is the story of the air war over Western Europe, told first hand by the American and German pilots and aircrew who took part. It spans the period between 1942 and 1945 and covers the encounters between the audacious Luftwaffe fighter pilots and the Fortress and Liberator bomber crews of the American 8th Air Forces flying from East Anglia. Many unique experiences are recounted from both the night and day bombing raids that were hurled against Hitler's war machine. What was it like to fly through the dense flak over the Ruhr and against the German Experten and to be hit by machine gun and cannon fire from Focke Wulf 190s and Bf 109s? How did so many badly damaged bombers manage to struggle back, against all odds, to their East Anglian bases? The author has sought the experiences of German fighter pilots, who explain how they stalked their prey in the sky over the Reich and how they pounced on their four engine victims from 12 o'clock high. This book contains vivid accounts of some of the most heroic actions in the history of air warfare and contains many previously unpublished action photographs.

347. SKUA: THE ROYAL NAVY'S DIVE BOMBER
Peter C. Smith, C
The Blackburn Skua was the first monoplane to be designed and built for the Royal Navy in the 1930s. As a result of continued debate, it became a compromise between the Navy’s desire for a carrier-based dive-bomber and RAF’s preference for a fighter. Despite being the first to shoot down a Luftwaffe aircraft in World War II, early operations in Norway found the type woefully inadequate as a fighter. As a dive-bomber, the Royal Navy put the design to good use from the outset of WWII. It was involved with the hunt for the Graff Spee, sunk the major warship Koln, suffered with great loss in an attack on the Scharnhorst, helped to keep the German advance at bay during the Dunkirk evacuation and attacked the French rogue battleship Richelieu in the Mediterranean. This book relates how the final design was created, how the dive-bombing technique was developed and perfected by naval pilots and traces the wartime operational career of the type with many first-hand accounts. 60 illustrations

348. NIGHT FIGHTER OVER GERMANY: FLYING BEAUFIGHTERS AND MOSQUITOES IN WORLD WAR 2
Graham White, C
These are the highly evocative wartime memoirs of a young NCO pilot whose operational experience was with Beaufighters and Mosquitoes flying in the long-range night-fighter role. It is not a gung-ho account of daring-do, but a 'warts and all' story of what life was really like in that time of international crisis. No punches are pulled when the author experienced badly designed and dangerous aircraft, such as the Merlin-engined Beaufighter that was almost impossible to fly and killed many pilots during training, nor are the blinding errors made by those staff officers who conceived impossible tasks and operations which these young airmen were ordered to fly and survive. Threaded into a fascinating story of flying with the then leading-edge electronic technology, are the entirely human tales of nights out on the town, when stressed crews could relieve the stress of combat. Some hilarious accounts of wild nights on the ground blend comfortably with the dark skies over Europe and the endless search for the invisible Luftwaffe who were tasked with the destruction of Allied heavy bombers. 110 Illustrations

349. NIGHT AND DAY BOMBER
OFFENSIVE: ALLIED AIRMEN IN WORLD WAR II EUROPE
Philip Kaplan and Jack Currie, C,O,
For much of World War II England provided the only western European base from which the British and American air forces could take the war into Nazi-occupied Europe and Germany itself. The American Eighth and Ninth Air Forces struck enemy targets by day at great distances, often on raids of eight or nine hours duration, while the RAF flew most of its demanding missions at night. This highly illustrated book will convey what it was like for pilots, aircrew and ground crew during their wartime service. It not only takes the reader on typical USAAF and RAF raids, but it also depicts the work of the mechanics and fitters as they struggled to keep battered aircraft airworthy, how the medics coped with the countless wounded who returned from the raids and looks at where the airmen relaxed within the various bases or in the local villages and towns. It will include period and later images of the bases, the aircraft, memorials and relevant locations in Britain, France and Germany. It will be a vivid and powerful human expression of the bomber airmen's wartime experience. 200 photos

Ron Mackay, C,O,
"First in the Field" is a relevant title to describe the pioneer force destined to operate a hitherto un-tested concept in modern aerial warfare: the 1st Bomb Division. The initial period of shallow-penetration missions with a severely under-strength force of B-17s, crews and support equipment was followed by growing and finally unsupportable losses. Nevertheless from early 1944 onward it was becoming clear that what was by then the 1st Bomb Division, had held its ground, often against painful tactical and strategic odds, and in doing so had laid the foundations for the final victory of America's bombing campaign against Hitler's regime. over 400 b/w and color photos

351. DINGHY DROP 279 SQUADRON RAF 1941 - 1946
Tom Docherty
September 1941 approval was given for the formation of two long-range Air-Sea Rescue squadrons. No 279 Squadron was formed at Bircham Newton in Norfolk. In the period leading up to the formation of the squadron there had been much work done in relation to air-dropped survival equipment such as the Lindholme Dinghy Dropping Gear, the Bircham Barrel and the Thornaby Bag. These contained such items as water, food, first-aid kits and distress signals. 279 was the first squadron to employ the airborne lifeboat, which was carried beneath the bellies of the portly Hudson. In January 1942 a practical boat, fitted with oars, sails and engines was put into production with the intention of slinging it under the bomb bay of the Hudson and to drop it by parachute. In October 1944 the Squadron re-equipped with Warwick Mk I aircraft moved to Thornaby in the NE of England. By now its ASR net was cast wide and there were detachments at Tain, Fraserburgh, Wick and Banff (all in northern Scotland) and Reykjavik.

352. THE FLY BY NIGHTS: RAF BOMBER COMMAND SORTIES 1944-45
Donald Feesey, C,
At the age of eighteen Don Feesey volunteered for pilot training with the RAF. Having almost completed his course to become a fighter pilot, an eye problem was detected and he was switched to navigational training. He completed a tour of thirty-four successful operations, the majority at night during 1944 and 1945 – at the height of the bomber offensive.
On one remarkable sortie his Lancaster lost all power and the order to bale out was given. As the aircraft gradually lost altitude, making a safe parachute descent more impossible by the second, Don was about to jump when the pilot, still at the controls, attracted his attention. It was a life or death situation. Should he jump or go to the assistance of his pilot, leading to an almost certain death? He elected to go to the aid of what he thought was his trapped pilot – but to his astonishment he found that the skipper had nursed one engine back into life, so the only two remaining crew managed to struggle back across the Channel, only to find that at 700feet they could not climb over the usually welcome white cliffs of Dover. They turned for Manston, the nearest airfield and flew along the coastline to make an eventual safe landing.

353. BEAUFIGHTERS IN THE NIGHT: 417 NIGHT FIGHTER SQUADRON USAAF
Lt. Col. Braxton Eisel, C,
The 417th Night Fighter Squadron USAAF was only the forth such unit to be formed. In the early days of WWII, the US sent observers to England to study how the latest form of air warfare would take shape and it very soon became apparent to them that a night fighting capability was of increasing importance. When they joined the battle against the Reich they found themselves without a suitable American aircraft and were forced to utilize RAF Beaufighters. Having ‘re-learned to fly’ this British design the 417th were sent to North Africa. Most of the ex-RAF aircraft they had inherited were battle weary and no supplies of spares were available through the US supply chain. The squadron found an elderly B-25 bomber, nicknamed the “Strawberry Roan,” and they ranged throughout the Mediterranean in search of Beaufighter parts. 417 soon built a healthy score of downed German and Italian aircraft and as the war progressed they were moved to Corsica to support the Italian invasion, After D-Day they were moved to Le Vallon from where they attacked the night-time movements of the German Army. Perhaps their most famous operation was to attack the low flying German Condor that ran the route from the Reich to Spain carrying Nazi gold and treasures.

354. MOSQUITO TO BERLIN: STORY OF 'BERTIE' BOULTER DFC ONE OF BENNET'S PATHFINDERS
Peter Bodle, C,
When Don Bennett formed the Pathfinder squadrons in 1942, the majority of the chosen pilots were highly experienced aircrew. Some, however, were exceptions and found themselves flying with this elite band with no previous combat experience. ‘Bertie’ Boulter was one such pilot. The son of British emigrants, when his father died the family returned to their native home in Norwich. In 1942 ‘Bertie’ was accepted for pilot training with the RAF and found himself back in Canada learning to fly. Upon his return to England, and with ‘exceptional’ describing his flying abilities, he found himself in the thick of Bomber Commands destruction of Germany’s industrial centers and communications system. His first mission was to Wiesbaden, followed by raids on Hanover and Cologne. November saw the first of his nineteen visits to Berlin and the first bale-out. Flying at 7,000 ft, Bertie, and his navigator were forced to abandon the aircraft. Eventually he arrived in Dunkerque, where he boarded an MTB for his return to Wyton. Bertie was forced to bale out once more, in January 1945, when he had to abandon his aircraft near his home base because of the dense fog, 12 of 36 aircraft failed to return from this raid.

TURBOJET: HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT 1930- 1960, VOL. 1 GREAT BRITAIN AND GERMANY
Anthony Kay, C,O
This important project brings together the early histories of the development of
the turbojet, turboprop and turboshaft engines for the first time. The work of
twelve nations [Great Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States,
Japan, France, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Hungary]
is described from the earliest days up to the end of the 1950s. This was the
Golden Age of aeronautical development and in that time hundreds of engines were
developed using the new and exciting gas turbine technology. These engines
powered some of the most important and best loved aircraft of the century.
This first of two volumes looks at the pioneering work of British and German
designers and manufacturers, starting with the very first jet engines designed
by Frank Whittle before World War Two. Technical details are set in their matrix
of events, personalities, politics and world history. The text is supported with
almost 300 black & white photographs and drawings and the book is complete with
appendices, including engine data tables.

This volume is the commemoration of the sacrifices and dedication of a group of
extremely courageous, though largely unheralded young men who volunteered to
answer a call, and to prosecute to its finish, in a manner up close and very
personal, a war not of their making so as to make the world free of tyranny and
a safer, better place in which to live. Written by Steve Luce, the son of one of
the pilots of the 86th, their story is presented by over 225 photographs from
the veterans, most never before published and with personal stories about their
war experiences. This is the story of the men and machines of the 86th
Fighter-Bomber Group, 12th Air Force.
The 86th was operationally assigned only two aircraft during WW II. From their
combat debut in early July, 1943, out of Korba, Tunisia and later based out of
Italy, until the summer of 1944 they flew the North American A-36 Apache or
Invader. They also flew a small number of the straight P-51, the cannon-armed
version of the same airframe, for pinpoint demolition work where the Browning
.50 caliber weapon, of which the A-36 carried six, was considered too light, and
bombs were considered too inaccurate. From the summer of 1944 until VE-Day they
flew the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. In the interim between official assignments,
they filled in with P-40’s.
There is a certain kind of man who is greater than the sum of his parts. The
moral imperative generated by his acknowledgment of duty and his regard for
innocent life is stronger than his biological imperative for self preservation
and he, the consummate altruist, goes in harm's way under the most dire
circumstances imaginable, often on a daily basis, putting his life on the line
(sometimes several times daily), knowing that there is a strong possibility that
he might not return.
Fighter-bomber pilots fought a unique kind of war in which they were often the
sole targets for massed enemy guns. Flying in very small groups of usually less
than a dozen, they engaged in what amounted to single combat, flying essentially
alone, close to the ground, very visible to those multitudes of enemy guns, of
which the pilots were often not aware until they started taking lead, steel and
high explosive at very close range.
When they died, they died alone, at low altitude and high speed with very little
chance and less time to get out of aircraft turned into sieves by everything the
enemy could put in the air, from large-caliber cannon shells to pistol rounds to
bricks to the kitchen sink.
Reading personal combat logs and squadron daily reports, it was stated very
clearly that, in many instances, pilots on low-level strikes simply vanished. No
one saw them get hit, no one saw them go in, no radio calls, nothing. This is
their story, fully illustrated with dozens of color profiles by Aviation Artist
Terry Higgins.
Sixteen colorful profiles of A-36 and P-47 aircraft.

THE BATTLE OF FRANCE THEN AND NOW: SIX NATIONS LOCKED IN AERIAL COMBAT SEPTEMBER
1939 TO JUNE 1940
Peter Cornwell, C,O
In these pages, Peter Cornwell tells the story of the greatest air battle of the
Second World War when six nations were locked in combat over north-western
Europe for a traumatic six weeks in 1940. We begin our account in September 1939
when the newly-formed British Air Forces in France sent the first squadrons to
the Continent. This Phoney War period is told through the eyes of Flying Officer
Edward Hall, Adjutant of No. 73 Squadron, who claimed his as the first squadron
to be sent to France and the last to leave. His unofficial war diary transports
us back over 60 years to the immediacy of the period before Hitler launched his
Blitzkrieg in May 1940. As far as RAF fighter squadrons in France were
concerned, it was an all-Hurricane show, yet it was the Blenheim and Battle
crews who suffered the brunt of the casualties. Every aircraft lost or damaged
through enemy action while operating in France is listed together with the fate
of the crews. Fighting a rearguard action almost from Day One, retreating from
airfield to airfield as the panzers roared westwards, the story of the British
Air Forces in France has never been told in this way before as it has largely
been overshadowed by the Battle of Britain which followed, yet the Battle of
France was even more costly in lives lost.
Peter Cornwell now redresses the balance as he describes the day-to-day events
as the battle unfolds, and details the losses suffered by all six nations
involved: Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and, rather belatedly,
Italy. The Royal Air Force lost more than a thousand aircraft of all types over
the Western Front during the six-week battle, but Luftwaffe losses were even
higher at over 1,800 aircraft. Having the disadvantage of fighting over foreign
soil, the RAF had many men made prisoner when baling out or crashing behind
enemy lines. All told, between September 3, 1939 and June 24, 1940, the RAF lost
1,127 airmen, of whom 415 paid the supreme sacrifice. Their names, and the
cemeteries where they lie or the memorials where they are commemorated, are
listed so their memory be not forgotten. They were - as Flying Officer Hall
describes them - 'the First of the Few'. Over 900 Illustrations.

BLUE SKIES TO HELL: AMERICA'S "BLOODY 100TH" IN THE AIR WAR OVER GERMANY
Edward M. Sion, C
This book provides a comprehensive look at air war over Europe during the
climactic year of World War II, combining firsthand experience with expert
analysis. The centerpiece is a mission-by-mission diary of 1st Lieutenant
Richard R. Ayesh, bombardier on a B-17 Flying Fortress, who flew with the 100th
Bombardment Group, 13th Combat Wing of the 8th Air Force—the legendary “Bloody
100th.” He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Croix de Guerre and the Air
Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, amongst others. This book follows Ayesh’s
progress from his youth during the Great Depression in Wichita, Kansas, which
was rapidly becoming the air capital of the nation, to his arrival in England as
a Lieutenant in a bomber crew assigned to assault the Third Reich. Once in
Europe, the author provides a look at the principles of American daylight
strategic bombing, while relaying the overall military situation on the ground
and in the air just after D-Day. This work is uniquely self-contained and covers
all aspects of Air War in a clear, concise, yet nontechnical manner. Topics
include photo-reconnaissance, munitions and bomb types, aircraft
characteristics, fighter and bomber tactics, bomber formations, strategic target
selection, radars, countermeasures and counter-counter measures. The unaltered
diary of Lt. Ayesh is presented mission-by-mission, punctuated by tragedy and
heroism, with explanations and commentary of the significance of events and
actions described en route. The result is one of the most frank and exciting
works on the air war over Europe to date. There is no varnishing of words in
this book, instead, after Lt. Ayesh is followed on his perilous return home in
U-boat infested waters, the book assesses the effectiveness of US strategy in
ultimately paralyzing the Nazi war machine. Finally, the complex moral issues
raised by area and city bombing are explored with 21st century implications. 16

THE PIONEER MUSTANG GROUP: THE 354TH FIGHTER GROUP IN WWII
Steve Blake, C,O
As the first unit to fly the Merlin-engined P-51B in combat, the 354th Fighter
Group adopted the nickname "Pioneer Mustang Group." Until D-Day, it escorted 8th
AF heavy bombers to targets on the European Continent. The group then moved to
France and supported Patton's Third Army from Normandy to Bavaria, and also
participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Its pilots scored over 600 confirmed
air victories, and forty-three of them became aces. This book is an almost
day-to-day account of their aerial combat experiences and the "gypsy" lifestyle
they and their support personnel led as they moved from one airfield to another
across Western Europe. over 600 bw images,

U.S. EXPERIMENTAL & PROTOTYPE AIRCRAFT PROJECTS: FIGHTERS 1939-1945
Bill Norton, C,O
America's military aircraft industry was forced to grow at an incredible pace
during World War II. At the beginning of the conflict, the nation's air arms
were out-matched by better-performing Axis aircraft. It was the development,
often in secret, and subsequent performance of America's fighter aircraft that
helped turn the tide of the war. This book focuses on those American fighter
projects of WWII that never reached combat forces, or only in a very limited
manner. The book illuminates little known or minimally documented aircraft and
projects that significantly advanced fighter design but never went into
full-rate production and deployment. The ‘standard’ types are also examined to
illustrate the ‘state of the art’ at the time, the American posture and
capabilities, goals set by national and military leadership, and general factors
affecting the course of development for classes of fighters. Hence, this work
follows the overall development of American fighter aircraft, but emphasizes
those little-known projects that matured to the point of significant design
development such as mockups, wind-tunnel models, and especially those yielding
flying prototypes. Also includes ‘dead-end’ variants of service types, those
only exported after US evaluation, and aircraft that entered service in only
small numbers before being overcome by more advanced models or the end of
hostilities. 390 b/w and 30 color photos.

AMERICAN SECRET PUSHER FIGHTERS OF WORLD WAR II
Gerald H. Balzer, C,O,
American Secret Pusher Fighters of World War II analyzes the state of military
aircraft procurement just prior to the start of World War II. It provides
insight into the difficulties encountered by America's air services in dealing
with an isolationist Congress and a limited mindset in the Army, which was
seemingly indifferent to the aeronautical progress being made in Europe by the
British and Germans. The book then focuses on the three winners of the 1940
fighter competition – the Vultee XP-54, the Curtiss XP-55, and the Northrop
XP-56. These radical designs ("Pusher" referred to having the engine in the
back) used non-strategic materials and were developed in secret. At the time,
the aerodynamics of these aircraft far outpaced engine development. In addition,
this book details the technical difficulties of mating an advanced aircraft
design with inadequate engine development. 385 b/w and color photos

NORTHROP'S NIGHT HUNTER: P-61 BLACK WIDOW
Jeff Kolln, C,O,
World War II changed the face of warfare forever. Now enemies were fighting and
flying all night, which mandated that a fighter be developed that could carry a
new technological invention aloft – radar. Guided by ground stations toward the
target, the P-61 would acquire an enemy aircraft with its on-board radar and
close for the kill. Northrop's Night Hunter covers the development history of
the P-61 Black Widow and the radar built specifically for its use. The P-61 was
the most successful Allied night fighter of the war, and flew combat in the
China-Burma-India, European, and Pacific theaters of the war. This book details
the aircraft's offensive and defensive systems, its operations, and covers its
unique uses from missile testing to flights by the U.S. Navy. 430 b/w and color

TECHNICAL & OPERATIONAL HISTORY OF THE LIBERTY ENGINE
Robert J. Neal, C,O,
The aim of the Liberty was to standardize aircraft engine design. The theory was
to have an engine design that could be built in several sizes and thus power
airplanes for any purpose, from training to bombing. The differences in sizes
would be obtained by using different numbers of cylinders in the same design. A
large number of other parts would also be used in common by all resulting sizes
of the engine series. The initial concept called for four-, six-, eight-, and
12-cylinder models. An X-24 version was built experimentally, and one- and
two-cylinder models were built for testing purposes. The engine design
eventually saw use on land, sea, and in the air, and its active military career
spanned the years 1917 to 1960. In addition, it provided noble service in a
multitude of civilian uses, and still does even today, some 90 years after the
first engine ran. This book covers the complete history of the Liberty's design,
production, and use in amazing detail and includes appendixes covering
contracts, testing, specifications, and much more. 1058 photos, drawings,
charts, and diagrams.

AIR FORCE: AMERICAN TACTICAL AVIATION IN THE ETO, 1943-45
Grégory Pons, C,O,
During the preparation of the Normandy Invasion, the American high command
realized soon enough that the 8th Air Force, which was wholly committed to
strategic bombing, could not undertake the close support of ground units in this
major offensive. The keystone of operation “Overlord” would indeed be mastery of
the skies: tactical aviation had to be able to intervene quickly and precisely,
and to operate from bases on the Continent. The heavy bombers, as they were
dependent on large and permanent airfields, could not be called upon for such
tasks. The concept of on-call tactical air support was therefore paramount in
the Overlord plans and the 9th Air Force was transferred to England for this
purpose. The hundreds of hitherto unpublished photos copied out from the pilots
and crews’ albums, and the full-color reconstruction of their flying gear are a
unique testimony to the day to day life of 9th Air Force personnel and the
missions of combat crews. Let us look at these men’s faces, they belong to the
Past but we owe them our Freedom. This book is dedicated to the memory of the
airmen and soldiers of the Ninth Air Force who gave their all for the Liberation
of Europe. Illustrated throughout.

US AIRCRAFT IN THE SOVIET UNION AND RUSSIA
Yefim Gordon, C,O,
A new and detailed examination of how imported American aircraft, engines and
aviation equipment were used in pre-revolutionary Russia, the Soviet Union, and
today’s Russia, influencing the development of aircraft industry, civil and
military aviation over all these years.
US aviation first ‘set foot’ on Russian soil in 1908 and since then many
different aircraft have been used. Between the two World Wars, Boeing and Martin
attempted to sell their aircraft to the Soviet Union with many different
variants flying. During the Second World War, Soviet airmen flew and fought in
US aircraft supplied under the Lend-Lease agreement and these planes proved to
be very popular with Soviet aircrew. After the Cold War, co-operation was
established between US and Russian aircraft manufacturers and research
establishments (such as the effort by Sukhoi and Gulfstream to create supersonic
business jets); deliveries of US aero engines for certain Russian aircraft have
also taken place. This unique book is illustrated with over 600 photographs,
many of which have never been published, line drawings and colour profiles and
will be of real interest to aviation enthusiasts everywhere. 600 colour and mono

MIGHTY BY SACRIFICE: THE DESTRUCTION OF AN AMERICAN BOMBER SQUADRON AUGUST 29,
1944
James Noles, C,
On August 29, 1944, the 15th U.S. Army Air Force unleashed 500 bombers against
oil and rail targets throughout central Europe. It dispatched the 20th Squadron
of the 2nd Bombardment Group on what they regarded as an easy assignment: attack
the Privoser Oil Refinery and associated railroad yards at Moravska Ostrava,
Czechoslovakia. This "milk run" deteriorated into the bloodiest day in the 2nd
Bombardment Group's history: not a single one of the 20th Squadron's B-17 Flying
Fortress bombers returned from the mission. Forty airmen were killed, another 46
spent the rest of the war as POWs, and only four, with the aid of the OSS and
anti-German partisans, and sympathetic Czech civilians managed to evade capture.
The ninety airmen on the mission to Moravska Ostrava provide a remarkable
personal window into the Allies' Combined Bomber Offensive at its height during
WWII. In a microcosm, their stories encapsulate how the U.S. Army Air Forces
built, trained, and employed one of the mightiest war machines ever seen. Their
stories also illustrate, however, the terrible cost in lives demanded by that
same machine.

TARGETING THE THIRD REICH: AIR INTELLIGENCE AND THE ALLIED BOMBING CAMPAIGN
Robert Ehlers, C,
When large formations of Allied four-engine bombers finally flew over Europe, it
marked the beginning of the end for the Third Reich. Their relentless hammering
of Germany—totaling more than 1.4 million missions—took out oil refineries,
industries, and transportation infrastructures vital to the Reich’s war effort.
While other accounts have focused on operational details, this is the first book
to reveal the crucial role of air intelligence in these dramatic campaigns.
Robert Ehlers reexamines these bombings through the lens of both air
intelligence and operations, a dual approach that shows how the former was so
vital to the latter’s success. Air intelligence was essential to both targeting
and damage assessment, and by demonstrating its contributions to the Combined
Bomber Offensive of 1943–1945, Ehlers provides a wealth of new insight into the
war. Ehlers describes the close ties that developed between the Royal Air
Force’s “precision intelligence” arm and the U.S. Army Air Force’s “precision
bombardment” forces, telling how the RAF’s photographic reconnaissance and
signals intelligence steered both British and American bombers to the right
targets at the right intervals with the right munitions. He shows that the
greatest strength of this partnership was its ability to orchestrate all aspects
of damage assessment within an effective organizational structure, so that by
1944 senior air commanders—like the RAF’s Arthur “Bomber” Harris and the AAF’s
Carl “Tooey” Spaatz—could gauge the accuracy of bombing with a high degree of
precision, analyze its effects on the German war effort, and determine its
effectiveness in helping the Allies achieve strategic objectives. Ehlers focuses
on three key offensives in 1944—against French and Belgian rail supply lines
delivering German troops and supplies to Normandy, against German oil
refineries, and against railroads and waterways inside the Reich—that had a
disastrous effect on the Nazi war effort. In the process, he underscores the
degree to which bombers constituted part of a highly effective combined-arms
force, giving Allied armies crucial advantages on the battlefield. Drawing on a
huge collection of bomb-damage assessment photographs and a wealth of other
archival sources, he shows that the success of these and other efforts can be
traced directly to the success of air intelligence. Providing a deeper and more
accurate understanding of the bomber campaigns’ role in the Allied victory,
Ehlers’s study testifies to the strategic importance of these efforts in that
war and provides a tool for understanding the importance of intelligence
operations in future conflicts. 21 photographs, 7 maps,

HAWKS AND BLACK WIDOWS: THE 13TH AIR FORCE NIGHT FIGHTERS IN THE SOUTH AND
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC, 1943 - 1945
Terry Mays, C,O,
Aerial night fighting against the Japanese in World War II demanded the merger
of a special type of pilot and plane. This is the story of those pilots who
risked their lives night after night flying P-38 Lightnings, P-70 Nighthawks,
and P-61 Black Widows - America's first purposely designed night fighter - for
the 13th Air Force in the South and Southwest Pacific between 1943 and 1945.
Night fighting included aerial intercepts of Japanese aircraft as well as raids
against Japanese installations. This book provides detailed accounts of all
these missions including the first solo night fighter raid over the highly
defended Japanese base at Rabaul, night aerial combat against Japanese bombers
and fighters, and harrowing night attacks against Japanese ground targets.
Coverage of American night fighter tactics and Japanese counter-tactics add to
the tale as 13th Air Force pilots battled the Japanese for control of the night
skies. over 300 color/bw images.

BATTLE COLORS VOLUME IV: INSIGNIA AND AIRCRAFT MARKINGS OF THE U.S. ARMY AIR
FORCE IN WWII: EUROPEAN - AFRICAN - MIDDLE EASTERN THEATER OF OPERATIONS
Robert Watkins, C,O,
Volume IV of the Battle Colors series concludes the examination of USAAF combat
insignia and aircraft tactical markings in the European Theater during WWII.
Covered within this work are the Ninth, Twelfth, and Fifteenth AAFs from the
first to last combat operations by U.S. air power in the Mediterranean Theater
of Operations. These operations were extensive and covered territory extending
from the sands of North Africa to the heartland of Germany, and from the shores
of French Morocco to the oil fields of Romania. Combat units covered include
both Day and Night fighters, Bombers, Troop Transports, and Reconnaissance and
Special Operations groups/squadrons. All combat units assigned or attached to
either of the three AAFs are covered within this work, utilizing over 1,123 full
color illustrations and wartime photos. These depict every currently known AAF
group/squadron insignia belonging to the Air Forces being examined. Included are
both official and un-official combat insignia, in addition to many designs that
were superseded by later images. Wartime photos showing common applications of
these unit insignia are interspersed throughout the text. Aircraft tactical
markings are depicted via original full color illustrations, showing full and
close-up profiles in addition to upper elevation views when appropriate. All
known Theater airfield assignment locations and dates are detailed with color
area maps included within each respective units section, and are all fully
indexed for ease of reference in the back of the book. Reader-friendly “Group
Markings” and “Group/Squadron Code” visual indexes are also included to assist
research into specific AAF units. Additional topics addressed include the
evolution of U.S. AAC/AAF national markings, combat mission markings, and basis
airframe nomenclature. Those familiar with Volume III of this series (which
deals exclusively with the Ninth USAAF) may wonder initially whether the
inclusion of the Ninth in this current work is a rehash of material covered in
Volume III. It is not! Volume IV deals with the same subject matter, but at an
earlier period of the Ninth AAF’s deployment in the MTO, prior to redeployment
of this unit to the UK, from which point Volume III picks up. Next in the Battle
Colors series (Volume V) will shift focus to the Pacific Theater of Operations.
This work will examine the insignia and tactical markings of the Fifth, Tenth,
Eleventh, and Thirteenth USAAFs. over over 250 illustrations,

ACHTUNG! MOSKITO! RAF AND USAAF MOSQUITO FIGHTERS, FIGHTER-BOMBERS, AND BOMBERS
OVER THE THIRD REICH 1941 - 1945
Martin Bowman, c,o,
Much has been written about the Mosquito, but this book features the young
pilots and navigators who carried out daring operations against targets in
Europe. Their stories are as compelling today as they were over sixty years ago
at the height of World War II. The Mosquito was for many the perfect synthesis
of power and beauty and arguably the most versatile of all Allied aircraft built
during the Second World War. Yet three times the Mosquito project was deleted
from Britain's future military plans, only to fight its way into the air and
turn in performance figures that left fellow aircraft behind and its critics
dumbfounded. Altogether, 7,781 examples of the 'Wooden Wonder' would be built in
no less than forty-three versions. Bomber, day fighter, night fighter,
pathfinder, attack aircraft, trainer, reconnaissance aircraft - the Mosquito did
it all. over 500 color/bw images,

calibre that could not fight the modern US fighters. It ended its days as a

9. ARNHEM: THE FIGHT TO
SUSTAIN, THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE AIRBORNE
LOGISTICIANS,
Frank Steer, C,
No story of the Arnhem campaign is more filled
with courage and devotion than that of the British support units, such as the
Royal Army Service Corps and the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Some support
units were to land with the parachute and glider troops and set up supply
dumps at the front line, while others were to drop supplies from British and
American aircraft flying over the battlefield. The supply aircraft came under
increasing German fire with each passing day, and there were numerous
incidents of dispatchers in burning planes waiting until they were over the
shrinking British perimeter before dropping supplies, sometimes moments
before the aircraft crashed or exploded. This very detailed account draws on
numerous eyewitnesses and also covers museums and monuments in today's Arnhem,

10. DEADLY SKY: THE AMERICAN
COMBAT AIRMAN IN WWII,
John McManus, C,
They came from nearly every city town, and state in America. They were the sons
of
the elite, the impoverished, and everyone in between. Regardless of their
background they had one thing in common: all had volunteered to fight in the
air against America's World War II enemies. These were America's combat
airmen, the bomber crews and fighter pilots who took to the skies to bring
the war to the Axis. During the twenties and thirties aviators had become
lionized by Americans starting with First World War combat veterans like
Eddie Rickenbacker and continuing with figures like Charles Lindbergh. The
truth, as it often does, belied the idealism of the young combat airmen.
Manned flight was still in its infancy and was plenty dangerous even if no
one was shooting at you. Add enemy fighters and flak and you had a deadly
brew. The Army Air Forces alone suffered over 120,000 casualties, of whom
more than 40,000 died. Using the same approach as in The Deadly Brotherhood,
his previous book on combat soldiers and marines, author McManus examines the
dangerous world of the American combat airmen in World War II. In this
dramatic and exciting narrative he covers all services and all theaters of
operations, 24 photos,

AMERICAN AIRBORNE PATHFINDERS IN WWII
Jeff Moran, C,O,
The story of the airborne pathfinders and the vital part they played in airborne operations during WWII has rarely been told. In this book, Jeff Moran tells the story of the operations they led, the equipment used, much of it unique to the pathfinders, and has memorialized them by noting, in many cases, the individual teams of pathfinders. This book is a very nice combination of both a complete operational history as well as uniform, insignia, equipment, etc. guide. The last third of the book is in full color showing all the various patches, insignia, and uniforms used. The rest of the best is sprinkled with color photographs of their very unique weapons and types of equipment and accessories, also includes many b/w period photos. Great study.

VOLUME 2: BRITISH, CANADIAN AND FRENCH
C,O,
The very first ground actions linked to the D-Day in France were fought by the
‘Red Berets’, the famous British and Canadian paratroopers of the 6th
Airborne Division dropped over the Caen region, and also by the lesser-known
French SAS who jumped over Brittany the same day to fight a guerilla war. This
book offers every detail of these elite soldiers, uniforms, equipment, badges

38. ALL AMERICAN ALL THE WAY: THE COMBAT HISTORY OF THE 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION IN WWII
Phil Nordyke, C,
This book is the first to tell the full combat history of these gallant All-Americans -- from their first perilous night drop into Sicily to their acclaimed victory parade up New York's 5th Avenue in 1946. Currently, the 82nd remains the only active American parachute division. Once into the thick of the action, the soldiers of the 82nd were never out of it; and All American, All the Way follows them from Sicily to Salerno to the treacherous mountains around Naples. Here the narrative forks, as the bulk of the division left Italy for England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy, leaving behind one regiment, the 504th Parachute Infantry, to take part in the disastrous assault on Anzio. All American brings to harrowing life the division’s exploits on June 6, 1944, where, after spearheading the airborne invasion, the paratroopers proved invaluable as shock troops and were pulled out of combat only to mount the airborne invasion of Holland—the campaign immortalized in A Bridge Too Far. We witness the airborne forces’ daring daylight jump deep behind Nazi lines, only to see their initial success erased by the failures of the armored division that followed. And we see the 82nd, barely a month later, thrust back into action when the Battle of the Bulge came roaring out of the Ardennes. From the shore of Sicily to the beaches of Normandy, from the Rhine to the Elbe to the German surrender and the U.S. occupation of Berlin, this is military history at its best, often told in the words of the soldiers themselves. It is a fitting — and long overdue — tribute to the valorous service of one of America’s most celebrated fighting divisions.

82nd AIRBORNE 1917 - 2005
Dominique Francois, C,O,
The 82nd Airborne Division has seen some of the American Army's most elite soldiers pass through its ranks. The history of the glorious division has been forged by thousands of anonymous paratroopers, always prepared to jump in extreme situations and to accomplish their objective on the ground, whatever the conditions. From the trenches of the Somme ( World War I) to the Iraqi desert (2nd Gulf War), from the Normandy bocage to the snow-covered forests of the Belgian Ardennes or the Vietnam jungle, the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division have accomplished their missions, never failing to do their duty. They have been the spearhead of the American army for almost 90 years. This memorial album includes almost one thousand photographs, virtually all published for the first time, from private collections and the Division's archives, nearly 1,000 photos in total.

FOUR STARS OF VALOR: THE COMBAT HISTORY OF THE 508TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT IN WWII
Phil Nordyke
Hailing from the big cities and small towns of America, these young men came together to serve their country and the greater good. Preparing for war, they came of age in what arguably became the best parachute infantry regiment to descend upon a Europe beset by World War II. They were the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the only parachute regiment to make four combat jumps in WWII, and their story is told here by their official historian. Drawing on interviews with surviving veterans and oral history recordings, as well as official archives and unpublished written accounts from over 300 veterans of the 505th PIR and their supporting units, author Phil Nordyke brings the history of the regiment to life, conveying with remarkable immediacy and power what it was like to be there: to liberate the first town in France; to spearhead the invasion of Sicily in the first American mass combat jump to fight at the forefront of six major campaigns (Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Germany); to jump into Normandy as the only U.S. parachute regiment with combat experience. This is history as it was lived by the men of the 505th, from their pre-war coming of age in the regiment, through the end of World War II, when they marched in the Victory Parade up Fifth Avenue in New York, to the post-war legacy of having been part of an elite parachute regiment with a record unsurpassed in the annals of combat.

43. 101ST AIRBORNE:
THE SCREAMING EAGLES IN WWII
Mark Bando, C,O
In 1942, the 82nd Infantry Division at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, was split in
two. One of the new divisions began intense preparations and training for a
surprise landing on the Nazi-occupied European continent. The location was
Normandy, France; the date was June 6, 1944; and the division was the 101st
Airborne: the legendary "band of brothers." This is the story of that divisions
heroic performance on D-Day, and right up to the Allied victory in Europe.
Filled with historic images, many never before published, it is also a tribute
to the fallen men of the 101st--the artists and athletes, scientists and
mathematicians, architects and builders whose sacrifice secured the future but
left the human race much diminished. Theirs is an accomplishment well-known but
rarely so dramatically depicted: Here is the 101st landing on Utah Beach, coming
in by parachute, or glider, or from the sea. Stirring words and pictures capture
the landing, linking the Utah and Omaha beachheads; the divisions breaking of
the German drive to the coast; and their brilliant stand at Bastogne; a refusal
to yield so famously summed up in the commanders reply to a German call for
surrender: "Nuts." The text is all new, but some photos have appeared in other
books, some are brand new for this book.

SURROUNDED BY HEROES: SIX CAMPAIGNS WITH DIVISIONAL HEADQUARTERS, 82ND AIRBORNE,
1942-1945
Leonard Lebenson, C,O,
When the author was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942 he had no reason to
expect special treatment. Instead, because he was a typist and draftsman, he was
grabbed up by an outfit desperately in need of those skills. It was the G-3
(Operations) Section of the 82nd Airborne. Len Lebenson thus gained a ringside
seat for some of the greatest campaigns of World War II. The 82nd fought
throughout the ETO, from the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and France, to
the Netherlands, the Bulge and the drive on Berlin. And throughout the campaigns
sat Lebenson at the division’s nerve center, typing orders, drafting battle
maps, and acting as liaison. A rare enlisted man with “bigoted” (top secret)
status, he was privy to the 82nd’s actions as they were being devised. In the
process, he was able to gain firsthand looks at Ridgeway, Gavin, Patton,
Montgomery and other luminaries who came through the Headquarters. Along with
the divisional staff, the author arrived in battle in many different ways—by
ship, plane, glider, parachute and jeep. With the rest of the All American
Division he shared the blistering heat of Africa, the bonechilling cold of the
Ardennes, the confusion of battle, and the ever-present enemy fire. Rising from
private to master sergeant, Lebenson thought that he had “the best job in the
army.” In this revealing memoir, however, he never fails to give full credit to
the men on the firing line who suffered the greatest hardships and casualties.
The author has provided a rare behind-the-scenes view of the 82nd Airborne in
World War II, yet he is the first to acknowledge that his greatest honor was to
be “Surrounded by Heroes.”

FROM HEAVEN TO HELL
Benoît Lelandais, S,O-
This book recalls the story of 135 Americans grouped together in a company of
paratroopers of the 82nd American Airborne from their enlistment to the end of
the Battle of Normandy. Throughout the book, you will discover what stirred them
to enlist in this new force, the paratroopers. After the psychological shock
provoked by Pearl Harbor on 7th December 1941, this unit, like many others, was
created from nothing. You will share with these men their daily life during
their military training in the United States through their own accounts, most of
them published here for the first time, as well as their life in England in
early 1944 whilst awaiting operation "Overlord" ; a plan which was kept secret
to the very last minute, even from the paratroopers. Through original accounts,
you will take part in the final preparations on the airfield tarmac at
Folkingham, in England just before they boarded the C47 aircraft. You will board
with them onto the nine C47's assigned to their company, from takeoff to the
great night jump onto drop zone "N" somewhere in the middle of Normandy among
German flak fire. You will take this jump with them, which was the first for
almost all of the paratroopers, and alas, the last for many. You will take an
active part in the regrouping attempts on the "high spot" of "Hill 30". You will
stay with them until the 12th of July 1944, the end of the Battle of Normandy.
You will gain an understanding the organization of a parachute regiment, a
battalion command company and an air transport group during the Battle of
Normandy. This book is far from a trivial official report. It is the human
testimony of simple soldiers, many of whom have awaited their old-age before
telling their tale.

46. THE LAST
DROP: OPERATION VARSITY, MARCH 24-25, 1945
Stephen L. Wright, C
Operation Varsity was the last major airborne offensive of World War II.
Conducted primarily by the British 6th Airborne and American 17th Airborne
Divisions, and including Canadian elements, the goal of Varsity was to cross the
Rhine River and gain a foothold for the final Allied drive into Germany. Drawing
on war diaries, unit histories, after-action reports, and interviews with
veterans, The Last Drop details the horrors of parachuting through flak-filled
skies, the dangers of piloting a glider safely to the ground, and the struggles
of infantry combat, and shows how thorough training, extensive planning, solid
execution, and sheer guts combined to make Operation Varsity a stunning victory.

NO BETTER PLACE TO DIE STE. MERE-EGLISE, JUNE 1944: THE BATTLE FOR LA FIERE
BRIDGE
Robert Murphy, C
The you-are-there story of one of the most ferocious small-unit combats in US
history . . . As part of the massive Allied invasion of Normandy, three airborne
divisions were dropped behind enemy lines to sew confusion in the German rear
and prevent panzer reinforcements from reaching the beaches. In the dark early
hours of D-Day, this confusion was achieved well enough, as nearly every
airborne unit missed its drop zone, creating a kaleidoscope of small-unit
combat. Fortunately for the Allies, the 505th Regimental Combat Team of the 82nd
Airborne Division hit on or near its drop zone. Its task was to seize the vital
crossroads of Ste Mère Eglise, and to hold the bridge over the Merderet River at
nearby La Fière. Benefiting from dynamic battlefield leadership, the
paratroopers reached the bridge, only to be met by wave after wave of German
tanks and infantry desperate to force the crossing. Reinforced by glider troops,
who suffered terribly in their landings from the now-alert Germans, the 505th
not only held the vital bridge for three days but launched a counterattack in
the teeth of enemy fire to secure their objective once and for all, albeit at
gruesome cost. In No Better Place to Die, Robert M. Murphy provides an objective
narrative of countless acts of heroism, almost breathtaking in its “you are
there” detail.
No World War II veteran is better known in 82nd Airborne circles than Robert M.
(“Bob”) Murphy. A Pathfinder and member of A Company, 505th PIR, Bob was wounded
three times in action, and made all four combat jumps with his regiment,
fighting in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and Holland. He was decorated for valor for
his role at La Fière, and is a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. After
the war, he was instrumental in establishing the 505th RCT Association, of which
he is the current president. 100+ illustrations throughout, maps,

TONIGHT WE DIE AS MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THIRD BATTALION 506 PARACHUTE
INFANTRY REGIMENT FROM TOCCOA TO D-DAY
Ian Gardner, C
The exploits of the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) have
been long overshadowed by those of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion. Yet the actions
of the 3rd Battalion during the D-Day landings were every bit as incredible and
this is the astounding story of how, after suffering many immediate casualties
on landing, the surviving paratroopers fought on towards their objectives
against horrendous odds. Using fascinating first-hand accounts of the soldiers
and the French civilians who witnessed the Normandy campaign, and illustrated
with black and white photographs and maps throughout, the authors offer a
unique, comprehensive account of the experiences of the 3rd battalion from
training through to D-Day and beyond.

1944: THE AIRBORNE BATTLE
Martin Middlebrook, C,
Arnhem was meant to end the war in Europe. The Germans were in retreat from
Normandy and seemed to be beaten. Three airborne divisions were to seize the
bridges across the great rivers of Holland and unleash the Allied armies into
Germany. The Battle of Arnhem was a turning-point in the war, a gamble by
Montgomery, using three airborne divisions to capture a series of bridges across
the wide rivers that separated a powerful mobile army from the plains of
northern Germany. If the bridges had been captured and held, and the ground
forces had been able to relieve the airborne forces, then there would have been
a good chance of ending the war before Christmas 1944. It all went wrong. The
initial operation was successful, the bridges taken by the Americans were
relieved by ground troops, but these troops could not reach Arnhem quickly
enough. In the meantime, only a small part of the 1st British Airborne Division
had reached the Arnhem Bridge. Most of the remainder of the airborne force was
held up on the outskirts of the town by German units that turned out to be far
stronger than expected – a major intelligence failure. After nine days of
fighting, the survivors of the division were withdrawn across the Rhine and it
was not until many months later that ground forces captured Arnhem. Using the
technique he has perfected over twenty-five years of military study, blending
meticulous research based on original documents with the personal experiences of
more than 500 participants, Martin Middlebrook describes the Battle of Arnhem
from start to finish, from one end of that complicated battlefield to the other.
On this fiftieth anniversary, he offers a masterly summary of what went wrong in
the last major defeat in battle suffered by the British Army. 24 b/w photos

COMMANDER: IN COMBAT WITH THE 505TH AND 508TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENTS, 82
AIRBORNE DIVISION IN WWII
Col. Mark Alexander & John Sparry, C,
Col. Mark James Alexander was the only airborne officer to lead three different
battalions into combat in World War II, successively commanding the 2d and 1st
Battalions, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment, and the 2nd Battalion, 508 PIR, of
the 82nd Airborne Division. A legend in his own time, he fought in North Africa,
Sicily, Italy, and France, and even after being seriously wounded in Normandy,
insisted on playing a role in the Battle of the Bulge. Airborne Generals Gavin
and Ridgway recognized Alexander’s superior battle skills and were more than
happy to use him to plug holes in the ranks. His reputation excelled among the
rank and file, right down to the lowest private. He led from the front, pressing
the attack while simultaneously looking out for his men. In Sicily, Alexander’s
battalion landed 25 miles from its drop zone, into a network of Italian
pillboxes, upon which the Colonel personally directed fire, thence captured
hundreds of prisoners. Dropped into the desperate inferno at Salerno, he refused
to give ground against German counterattacks, forming his paratroopers against
enemy efforts to push Allied forces back into the sea. At Normandy one seasoned
lieutenant, John “Red Dog” Dolan, 505 PIR, called him “the finest battalion
commander I ever served under,” after Alexander had led the 1/505 for ten days
through the bloody battle for La Fière Bridge and Causeway. Alexander’s passion
and truest talent was leading men in the field, and he insisted on sharing their
risks. On one occasion in Normandy he and his runner (he went through several)
were caught behind German lines and encountered a platoon of SS. Opening fire,
the Colonel killed or wounded several and brought the rest in as prisoners. An
88mm shell finally got the best of him, shrapnel tearing through his lungs, and
while the 82nd was engaged in the Bulge, Alexander was only allowed to run its
base camps in France— despite his protests—as General Gavin noted that he was
still coughing up blood. This memoir is based on the transcription of hundreds
of hours of recorded interviews made by Alexander’s grandson, John Sparry, over
a period of years late in his life. Providing valuable insight into the beloved
commander who led three of the most storied battalions in the US Army, Jump
Commander also contains a wealth of new detail on 82nd Airborne operations, and
casts insight on some of the most crucial battles in the ETO. This highly
readable and action-packed narrative may well be the last remaining memoir to be
written in the voice of a major airborne officer of the Greatest Generation.
