RED SNIPER
ON THE EASTERN FRONT: THE MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH PILYUSHIN
Joseph Pilyushin, C
Joseph Pilyushin, a top Red Army sniper in the ruthless fight against the
Germans on the Eastern Front, was an exceptional soldier and he has a remarkable
story to tell. His firsthand account of his wartime service gives a graphic
insight into his lethal skill with a rifle and into the desperate fight put up
by Soviet forces to defend Leningrad. He also records how, during the three-year
siege, close members of this family died, including his wife and two sons, as
well as many of his comrades in arms. He describes these often-terrible events
with such honesty and clarity that his memoir is remarkable. Piluyshin, who
lived in Leningrad with his family, was already 35 years old when the war broke
out and he was drafted. He started in the Red Army as a scout, but once he had
demonstrated his marksmanship and steady nerve, he became a sniper. He served
throughout the Leningrad siege, from the late 1941 when the Wehrmacht’s advance
was halted just short of the city to its liberation during the Soviet offensive
of 1944. His descriptions of grueling front-line life, of his fellow soldiers
and of his sniping missions are balanced by his vivid recollections of the
protracted suffering of Leningrad’s imprisoned population and of the grief that
was visited upon him and his family. His gripping narrative will be fascinating
reading for any one who is keen to learn about the role and technique of the
sniper during the Second World War. It is also a memorable eyewitness account of
one man’s experience on the Eastern Front. 20 illustrations

EXECUTIVE
OUTCOMES AGAINST ALL ODDS
Eeben Barlow, S
Eeben Barlow a former lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Force of the South
African Defence Force, served in the Engineer Corp, the Reconnaissance Wing of
the elite 32-Battalion, Military Intelligence and in the shadowy Civil
Co-operation Bureau division of Special Forces. When the government arbitrarily
disbanded the CCB Barlow found himself on the street. Taking advantage of his
exceptional military skills he formed Executive Outcomes, a private company
under whose aegis he was invited to train the SADF’s Special Forces in
intelligence skills and to stem the flow of stolen diamonds from the De Beers
Corporation’s properties. He was then invited to recruit a force of
ex-servicemen retrenched from the SADF to assist an oil company in the recovery
of equipment that they had been forced to abandon at Soyo in north-western
Angola after it was overrun by UNITA rebels. EO’s successes resulted in a
contract to re-train the Angolan army and lead it in a fight to defeat the UNITA
rebels. A contract to restore order in Sierra Leone and other like contracts
followed, including one to rescue Western hostages taken by separatist rebels in
Indonesia. Illustrated with color photos,

A
BETTER COMRADE YOU WILL NEVER FIND
Helmut Schiebel, c,
A Better Comrade You Will Never Find presents Eastern Front experiences of
Helmut Schiebel from 1941 to the end of WW II. The author took part in the
invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 as a member of the 43 Motorcycle
Infantry Battalion of the 13 Panzer Division. In September he left for an
Officer Candidate course in Germany, returning as a Leutnant and platoon leader
to the division’s reconnaissance battalion at the end of April 1942. He was
wounded at the end of June and retuned to Russia in September 1943. On the way
to the 18 Panzer Division, he found out that the division was being dissolved
and opted to transfer to the antitank branch. He arrived at Panzerjager
Abteilung 88 in October 1943 where he was given a manual for antitank troops and
soon after became a platoon commander on a Marder tank destroyer. After heavy
losses, in November 1943 the unit was transferred to Mielau Poland, where it
trained on and was equipped with the heavy Hornisse tank destroyer. When the
battalion was sent to the Eastern Front in mid-February 1944, the author stayed
behind to receive missing equipment and additional personnel. Panzerjager
Abteilung 88 was trapped in the Kamenez-Podolsk wandering pocket, and its
actions there are recounted through the eyes of some other soldiers. After the
battalion escaped the trap, the author rejoined it (as platoon leader) in
Galicia in mid-July 1944. Suffering heavy losses, the battalion was withdrawn to
receive new equipment and train replacements. It returned to the front at the
end of December 1944 in the Krakow area. By that time, Schiebel was the
commander of the 2nd company. The unit fought across southern Poland, through
Silesia and eastern Germany to the area around Karlsbad. There, on May 7, 1945,
Panzerjager Abteilung 88 surrendered to American troops. This book will keep you
immersed from the first page to the last; there are hardly any breaks in the
action. From the first days of the invasion of the Soviet Union, where the
motorcycle troops were always at the front, to the last desperate days of the
war, when the few tank destroyers were rushed from one hot spot to another, you
will share the full spectrum of emotions of the author and his troops. Life was
short and brutal at the front for many soldiers, comrades died suddenly nearby,
experience and luck was needed to survive. The descriptions of the combat are
detailed and there is much to be learned about armour tactics. This is not just
another memoir; the author was an excellent commander and imparts many valuable
lessons for those that are interested in small-unit actions. 5 B&W images, 12
colour images, 45 photos, 4 colour 3D drawings.

KNIGHTS AND THEIR BATTLES: THE WAFFEN-SS KNIGHT'S CROSS HOLDERS VOLUME 2:
JANUARY - JULY 1943
Peter Mooney, C
Volume 2 in this new series continues the overview of each Waffen-SS unit that
fought during World War II, where it was raised and where it fought. Within each
of the various battles covered, the book focuses specifically on each Waffen-SS
soldier that was awarded the various grades of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron
Cross. This second volume covers the period from January to July 1943 and was
written with the help of surviving Knight’s Cross holders or the Waffen-SS
soldiers that fought alongside them. Unlike previous Knight’s Cross books that
are reference based works, this book is aimed at providing a detailed account of
the part played by each Waffen-SS Knight’s Cross holder in each battle. This
project was started to answer the questions: How many Knight’s Cross holders
received their award for the same battle or action? Where they one mile or a
thousand miles apart? Did the actions take place on the same day? These books
provide the answers. over 60 bw images,

HERMANN
GORING FIGHTER ACE: THE WORLD WAR I CAREER OF GERMANY'S MOST INFMAOUS AIRMAN
Peter Kilduff, C
'Hermann Göring – Fighter Ace' is the first in-depth look at Göring’s role as a
military flyer and air combat leader from 1914 through the end of The Great War,
and how those experiences shaped the personality that came to the world’s
attention in 1939. At the outset of the First World War, Göring was eager to
prove his value to his fatherland in initial skirmishes with French troops. When
struck by severe rheumatoid arthritis in September 1914, the twenty-one-year-old
officer’s burning ambition and ego could not tolerate being sidelined and the
following month he forced himself out of a sick bed to begin a new career as an
aviation observer. Göring went on to become a fighter pilot with twenty-two
downed enemy aircraft to his credit, the last wartime commander of the Red
Baron’s own fighter wing, Jagdgeschwader Richthofen, and recipient of a row of
prestigious medals including Prussia’s highest bravery award, the Pour le Mérite.
Peter Kilduff has produced a landmark volume based on extensive research into
Göring’s early military records and thousands of German and Allied documents to
put the neophyte airman’s life and events into perspective. Among other
resources, Kilduff drew on Göring’s own combat reports and related writings.
Illustrated with over eighty drawings and photographs, including many from
Goring’s private collection and never before published, Herman Göring – Fighter
Ace is a tour de force of historical material covering the early combat career
of one of the Twentieth Century’s most infamous military figures.

THE
HUNGARIAN HONVED ARMY: HISTORY, UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE HUNGARIAN
TERRITORIAL ARMY FROM 1868 TO 1918
Dr. György Sagvari, C,O,
About the book
Approx. 672 pages, ca. 2000 photographs,
As a result of the Austro-Hungarian settlement, after 1868 the Austro-Hungarian
Empire’s armed forces were made up of three separate parts: alongside the k. u.
k. Army, two separate territorial armies were formed, one for Austria and one
for Hungary. By the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Royal Hungarian
Territorial Army, known as the ‘Honvéd’, had developed, in virtually every
branch of arms, into a veritable Hungarian miniature version of the Common Army.
The Honvéd Army, with its motto, ‘For King and Fatherland’, embraced the
Hungarian soldierly traditions that had evolved from the revolution of 1848, the
Napoleonic Wars and the great hussar legends. This book details the development
of the small ‘second line’ Hungarian army from its formation to the fall of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918; its historical background and political
significance, as well as its structure, uniforms and equipment. The subtle
nuances and differences compared with the uniforms of the k. u. k. Army are
illustrated by many items of headgear, uniform and equipment. Contemporary
photographs, many of them never before published, and colour photographs of
items from the collections of the Museum of Military History in Budapest, and a
number of private collections, present a vivid and colourful picture of the
lives and work of the ‘Honvéd’. 2000 photographs

AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN
ARTILLERY FROM 1867 TO 1918
Dr. M. Christian Ortner, C,O,
Over the period from 1867 to 1918 the Austro-Hungarian artillery experienced
major changes both in technical and organizational terms. Proceeding from the
muzzle-loader of the ‘Battery of the Dead’ at the Battle of Sadowa in 1866, the
artillery was continuously modernized and evolved from the M 1875, M 1880 and M
1899 systems to barrel recoil artillery and finally the massed guns of the First
World War. A total of 637 pages and more than 1,200 photographs, design sketches
and illustrations, sometimes published for the first time, demonstrate not only
the appearance and design principles of the more than a hundred artillery models
introduced over this period, but also numerous prototypes and contemporary
foreign artillery systems. Tables and organizational charts describe the
structures and organization of the artillery at different times and plans and
descriptions explain firing methods and artillery tactics in detail. Colour
illustrations of the types of Austrian ammunition employed in the First World
War round off the picture. The author of the book, Dr. M. Christian Ortner, is
the Director of the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna, 1,200 photographs
and illustrations.

SWEDES
AT WAR: WILLING WARRIORS OF A NEUTRAL NATION, 1914 - 1945
Lars Gyllenhall, S,
From the mud and bloody hell of Flanders to forlorn battles in Siberia and
bitter street fighting in the very heart of Berlin 1945. From Africa to the
Arctic, fighting men from a country frowned upon for its "cowardly" neutrality
participated in all the crucial battles of World Wars I and II. Their homeland
was Sweden, which has enjoyed almost two hundred years of peace. Swedes at War
is the first book in English to reveal that, despite Sweden's policy of
neutrality, no fewer than 23,000 Swedish citizens went to war between 1914 and
1945. Swedes at War also puts an end to the myth that most Swedes enlisted in
Hitler's forces. Only 200 joined the Waffen-SS or the Wehrmacht of 1939–1945. In
the same period 9,000 Swedish citizens joined the Americans, the British, the
Norwegians, and the Poles. In addition, well over 200,000 men of Swedish descent
served in the US, British, Canadian, and Australian Armed Forces--facts in which
Americans, Australians, Britons, and Canadians of Swedish descent can take
pride. 4 maps, 132 photos.

HITLER'S
STORMTROOPERS AND THE ATTACK ON THE GERMAN REPUBLIC, 1919 - 1933
Otis Mitchell, C,O-
This book seeks to ll a significant gap in the literature by concentrating
particularly on the Nazi Party and its growth during the years of the Weimar
Republic, examining the paramilitary presence in Germany and Bavaria after World
War I. Most of the book describes the development of the Nazi Storm Detachment (Sturmabteilung,
or SA) before and after the failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. By the time Hitler
came to power in January 1933, there were perhaps as many as 400,000 of these
brown-shirted men, often self-styled revolutionaries, creating violence on a
daily basis and destroying the underpinnings of the Weimar Republic. The book
features several photographs captured from the Nazi Party’s Central Publishing
Facility in Munich and passed to the author in the late 1950s.

THE HITLER
I KNEW: MEMOIRS OF THE THIRD REICH'S PRESS CHIEF
Otto Dietrich, C
When Otto Dietrich was invited in 1933 to become Adolf Hitler's press chief, he
accepted with the simple uncritical conviction that Adolf Hitler was a great
man, dedicated to promoting peace and welfare for the German people. At the end
of the war, imprisoned and disillusioned, Otto Dietrich sat down to write what
he had seen and heard in twelve years of the closest association with Hitler,
requesting that it be published after his death. Dietrich's role placed him in a
privileged position. He was hired by Hitler in 1933, was his confidant until
1945, and he worked—and clashed—with Joseph Goebbels. His direct, personal
experience of life at the heat of the Reich makes for compelling reading.

HELLSTORM:
THE DEATH OF NAZI GERMANY, 1944-1947
Tom Goodrich, C,
It was the most deadly and destructive war in human history.
Millions were killed, billions in property was destroyed, ancient
cultures were reduced to rubble--World War II was truly man's
greatest cataclysm. Thousands of books, movies and documentary films
have been devoted to the war. There has never been such a terrible
retelling of the story, however, as one will find in Hellstorm.
In a chilling "you-are-there" style, the author places the reader at
the scene, in the moment. Throughout this book readers will see what
Allied airman saw as they rained down death on German cities; or the
reader will experience what those below experienced as they sat
trembling in their bomb shelters awaiting that very same death from
above. The reader will view up close the horrors of the Eastern
Front during the last months of fighting and through the mud, blood
and madness of combat they may come to understand how the same
German soldiers, who only moments before had destroyed an enemy
tank, could now risk their own lives to rescue the trapped Soviet
crew inside. Readers will witness for themselves the fate of German
women as the rampaging Red Army raped and murdered its way across
Europe--all females, from "eight to eighty" feared the dreaded
words, "Frau Komm." The worst nautical disasters in history which
claimed thousands of lives, the greatest mass migration known to man
in which millions perished, the fate of those wretched victims in
post-war death camps and torture chambers, these and many other dark
secrets of World War II now come to light in Hellstorm.

AUTOMATIC RIFLE THE AMERICAN FIREPOWER SERIES
Tom Laemlein, S,O,
The BAR has been described as too heavy to be an automatic rifle and too light
to be a true light machine gun. But these comments come from those who don’t
know the combat effectiveness of this fine weapon. Developed in time to see
limited action in WWI, the BAR served American forces until the late 1950s. The
images in this long-awaited photo study support the GI’s love for the BAR.
Offering more than 200 images, many never before seen, this book shows the BAR

THE
SOVIET COUNTERINSURGENCY IN THE WESTERN BORDERLANDS
Alexander Statiev, C,
The Soviet Counterinsurgency in the Western Borderlands investigates the Soviet
response to nationalist insurgencies that occurred between 1944 and 1953 in the
regions the Soviet Union annexed after the Nazi-Soviet pact: Eastern Poland,
Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Based on new archival data, Alexander Statiev
presents the first comprehensive study of Soviet counterinsurgency that ties
together the security tools and populist policies intended to attract the local
populations. The book traces the origins of the Soviet pacification doctrine and
then presents a comparative analysis of the rural societies in Eastern Poland
and the Baltic States on the eve of the Soviet invasion. This analysis is
followed by a description of the anti-communist resistance movements.
Subsequently, the author shows how ideology affected the Soviet pacification
doctrine and examines the major means to enforce the doctrine: agrarian reforms,
deportations, amnesties, informant networks, covert operations, and local
militias. The book also demonstrates how the Soviet atheist regime used the
church in its struggle against guerrillas and explains why this regime could not
curb the random violence of its police. The final chapter discusses the Soviet
experience in the global context.

MUSSOLINI'S
WAR: FASCIST ITALY'S MILITARY STRUGGLES FROM AFRICA AND WESTERN EUROPE TO THE
MEDITERRANEAN AND SOVIET UNION 1935 - 45
Frank Joseph, C
Among the great misconceptions of modern times is the assumption that Benito
Mussolini was Hitler's junior partner, who made no significant contributions to
the Second World War. That conclusion originated with Allied propagandists
determined to boost Anglo-American morale, while undermining Axis cooperation.
The Duce's failings, real or imagined, were inflated and ridiculed; his
successes, pointedly demeaned or ignored. Italy's bungling navy, ineffectual
army - as cowardly as it was ill-equipped - and air force of antiquated biplanes
were handily dealt with by the Western Allies. So effective was this
disinformation campaign that it became post-war history, and is still generally
taken for granted even by otherwise well-informed scholars and students of World
War Two. But a closer examination of recently disclosed, and often neglected,
original source materials presents an entirely different picture. They shine new
light, for example, on Italy's submarine service, the world's greatest in terms
of tonnage, its boats sinking nearly three-quarters of a million tons of Allied
shipping in three years' time. During a single operation, Italian 'human
torpedoes' sank the battleships HMS Valiant and Queen Elizabeth, plus an
eight-thousand-ton tanker, at their home anchorage in Alexandria, Egypt. By
mid-1942, Mussolini's navy had fought its way back from crushing defeats to
become the dominant power in the Mediterranean Sea. Contrary to popular belief,
his Fiat biplanes gave as good as they got in the Battle of Britain, and their
monoplane replacements, such as the Macchi Greyhound, were state-of-the-art
interceptors superior to the American Mustang. Savoia-Marchetti Sparrowhawk
bombers accounted for seventy-two Allied warships and one hundred-ninety-six
freighters before the Bagdolio armistice in 1943. On 7 June 1942, infantry of
the Italian X Corps saved Rommel's XV Brigade near Gazala, in North Africa, from
otherwise certain annihilation, while horse-soldiers of the Third Cavalry
Division Amedeo Duca d'Aosta defeated Soviet forces on the Don River before
Stalingrad the following August in history's last cavalry charge. As influential
as these operations were on the course of World War Two, more potentially
decisive was Mussolini's planned aggression against the United States' mainland.
Postponed only at the last moment when its conventional explosives were slated
for substitution by a nuclear device, New York City escaped an atomic attack by
margins more narrow than previously understood. It is now known that Italian
scientists led the world in nuclear research in 1939, and a four-engine Piaggio
heavy bomber was modified to carry an atomic bomb five years later. These and
numerous other disclosures combine to debunk lingering propaganda stereotypes of
an inept, ineffectual Italian armed forces. That dated portrayal is rendered
obsolete by a true-to-life account of the men and weapons of Mussolini's War. 36

EYEWITNESS
TO HELL: WITH THE WAFFEN-SS ON THE EASTERN FRONT IN WORLD WAR 2
Eric Stahl, S,
While the Waffen-SS has become legendary as an elite fighting force in World War
II, there are few accounts that present the human face of those fearsome
formations. Erich Stahl was a professional journalist assigned to cover some of
the most famous of these units—the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf
Hitler," the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking," and the Dutch and Ukrainian
volunteers serving with the SS-but with a twist: he actually pulled duty as a
soldier in the front lines, where he experienced all the hardships, privations,
and gut-wrenching emotions of the men who fought the Soviets. While the author
was a committed National Socialist at the time, his insights concerning the
conduct of the war and the reasons for its existence offer a real eye opening to
those who have never read about the conflict from the German point of view.

BLOOD
ON THE SNOW: THE CARPATHIAN WINTER WAR OF 1915
Graydon Tunstall, C,
The Carpathian campaign of 1915, described by some as the “Stalingrad of the
First World War,” engaged the million-man armies of Austria-Hungary and Russia
in fierce winter combat that drove them to the brink of annihilation. Habsburg
forces fought to rescue 130,000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers trapped by Russian
troops in Fortress Przemysl, but the campaign was waged under such adverse
circumstances that it produced six times as many casualties as the number
besieged. It remains one of the least understood and most devastating chapters
of the war—a horrific episode only glimpsed previously but now vividly restored
to the annals of history by Graydon Tunstall. The campaign, consisting of three
separate and ultimately doomed offensives, was the first example of “total war”
conducted in a mountainous terrain, and it prepared the way for the great battle
of Gorlice-Tarnow. Habsburg troops under Conrad von Hötzendorf faced those of
General Nikolai Ivanov, which together totaled more than two million soldiers.
None of the participants were psychologically or materially prepared to engage
in prolonged winter mountain warfare, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers
suffered from frostbite or succumbed to the “White Death.” Tunstall reconstructs
the brutal environment—heavy snow, ice, dense fog, frigid winds—to depict
fighting in which a man lasted on average between five to six weeks before he
was killed, wounded, captured, or committed suicide. Meanwhile, soldiers warmed
rifles over fires to make them operable and slaughtered thousands of horses just
to ward off starvation. This riveting depiction of the Carpathian Winter War is
the first book-length account of that vicious campaign, as well as the first
English-language account of Eastern Front military operations in World War I in
more than thirty years. Based on exhaustive research in Vienna’s and Budapest’s
War Archives, Tunstall’s gripping narrative incorporates material drawn from
eyewitness accounts, personal diaries, army logbooks, and correspondence among
members of the high command. 20 photographs

6534 INTO THE CAULDRON DAS REICH ON THE EASTERN FRONT
Robert Michulec, S,O,
In his previous volume, Robert Michulec examined the role of “Das Reich” in the
invasion of France. This latest work provides an invaluable partner as it looks
at the participation of “Das Reich”, now established fully as a Waffen SS
division, on the Eastern Front. The volume commences with a description of the
“Das Reich” Division as it took part in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of
the Soviet Union from 22 June 1941 onwards. What followed was a stunning series
of victories that swept “Das Reich” and other German units across the vast
Russian steppes to the very gates of Moscow. However, stiffening Soviet
resistance and frigid winter conditions brought the momentum of the assault to a
grinding and deadly halt. After refitting in France, the division returned to
the Eastern Front and participated in combat in places like Kharkov and in the
momentous Battle of Kursk in July 1943. After this, “Das Reich” was involved in
the bitter retreat back to the borders of the Fatherland, including episodes
such as the effort to relieve the Korsun Pocket, as well as combat in Hungary.
The book documents the waxing and waning fortunes of “Das Reich” in a rich
collection of black and white photographs. Pictures show troops in the lead-up
to the invasion of Russia, as well as in combat in the vast Soviet interior.
These photos show troops, equipment and vehicles in all sorts of conditions from
the summer dust to autumn mud and winter snow. For example, motorcycles, cars,
trucks, antitank weapons and tanks all find a place between the covers. In this
book from Concord Publications’ Warrior series, the fighting man of “Das Reich”
naturally remains the focus, and it gives some indication of the kind of
hardships he endured on the Eastern Front. In the center of the book, the artist
Dmitriy Zgonnik displays four color plates showing typical soldiers resplendent
in their combat uniforms and wielding a range of weapons. Throughout the book,
the author has included detailed captions to keep readers informed about
specific characteristics of “Das Reich,” its equipment and organization. This is
a fitting second volume about this famous German division, and it traces in some
illustrated detail its exploits on the Eastern Front. 134 photos.

NOTES
OF A RUSSIAN SNIPER
Vassili Zaitsev, C,
A fascinating memoir by the Red Army's greatest sniper-the inspiration for the
movie, Enemy at the Gates. "As a sniper, I've killed more than a few Nazis. I
have a passion for observing enemy behavior. You watch a Nazi officer come out
of a bunker, acting all high and mighty, ordering his soldiers every which way,
and putting on an air of authority. The officer hasn't got the slightest idea
that he only has seconds to live." Vassili Zaitsev's account of the hell that
was Stalingrad is moving and harrowing. This was a battle to the death -
fighting street by street, brick by brick, living like rats in a desperate
struggle to survive. Here, the rules of war were discarded and a psychological
war was being waged. In this environment, the sniper was king - an unseen enemy
who frayed the nerves of brutalized soldiers. Zaitsev volunteered to fight at
Stalingrad in 1942. His superiors recognized quickly his talent, and made him a
sniper. He adapted his hunting skills to the ruins of the city, watching his
prey with nerves of steel. In his first 10 days, Zaitsev killed 40 Germans. He
achieved at least 225 kills and the tactics he developed are still being studied
today. Vassili Zaitsev was born in 1915, and spent his early life as a hunter in
the Urals. He joined the Russian navy in 1937, and volunteered for Stalingrad
after hearing about the appalling losses.Zaitsev's mastery as a sniper became
legendary, and he was awarded several times for his skill, including the coveted
gold star.

THE GERMAN COLONIAL TROOPS FROM 1889 TO 1918: HISTORY, UNIFORMS AND
EQUIPMENT
Jurgen Kraus, C,O,
This 600-page illustrated volume deals first with the history of
Germany’s colonial ambition, thus providing a historical and political
framework. Starting with the first tentative colonisation projects, this
part of the book concentrates on the years between 1884 (the
establishment, under Imperial constitutional law, of the first
‘protectorate’) and 1919, the formal end of Germany’s colonial Empire
with the Treaty of Versailles. It describes the motives of a country
striving to obtain ‘a place in the sun’ and the initial reluctance of
Reichs Chancellor Bismarck, who eventually conceded to the idea of
colonisation, and then deals in detail with the security organisation in
the protectorates as well as the special case of Jiaozhou, China. This
introductory section closes with the campaigns and military operations
prior to the First World War and the occurrences during the War, 1914 to
1918. The second part deals with the uniforms and equipment of the
Schutztruppen: based on the early uniforms worn from 1889 in German East
Africa and German South-West Africa, the universal uniform for all
‘Imperial Schutztruppen’ was established in 1896. Along with the
representative grey home uniform, this also included a sand-coloured or
white tropical uniform adapted to the climate in the protectorates. In
1913, the field grey uniform was finally introduced. Despite the basic
form, uniforms and equipment varied in the protectorates. All the
various items, such as pith helmets, caps, tunics and cartridge belts,
are described here in great detail. The African soldiers’ tropical
uniform is also dealt with in a special section. The troops for East
Asia presented a completely different picture. Initially, the East Asia
Expeditionary Corps, sent out in 1900, was only issued an improvised
uniform, which made quite an exotic impression with its straw hats. By
1901 the troops were issued special field grey winter and summer
uniforms with brand new helmets, pith helmets, tunics and equipment.
These items were not only worn by the East Asia Occupation Troops until
1909, they also became trial models in the search for a new field
uniform and many important elements were later incorporated into the
field uniform of the German Army. approx. 1000 photographs

HITLER'S WAR ON RUSSIA (AKA HITLER MOVES EAST)
Paul Carell, C,
This special limited edition of an all time classic on the war on
the Eastern Front is based off the original British first edition.
The dust jacket, photos and fold out map are reproduced exactly here
as the original. The only small changes are upgrades on the binding,
paper and overall production in which no expense was spared.
Launched with an immense invasion force of three million men,
Germany's surprise attack against Russia in 1941 was planned by
Hitler to crush the Soviets within eight weeks. Instead, hampered by
major strategic errors, fanatical Soviet resistance, and the
severity of Russian winters, "Operation Barbarossa" lingered on
until, in 1943, The German fighting machine finally broke down at
Stalingrad in one of the most shattering defeats of the century.
Rarely has this war of attrition be reconstructed in such authentic
detail and with such starkly dramatic effects as it is in this
account. Paul Carell, basing his story on official military records,
the memoirs of commanders in both German and Russian armies, and
extensive conversations with survivors of all ranks, has drawn an
objective, extraordinary vivid pictures of a struggle which, in the
size of the forces involved and the ferocity of the fighting, was
unparalleled in the history of the war. Along "the greatest front in
world history" three armoured spearheads advanced simultaneously in
a Blitzkrieg aimed at the vital centers of Russia. Their superior
direction of operations, the daring mobility of the Panzer Corps,
and the toughness of the troops swept the Germans to within 60
miles of Moscow. But in 1942, while his generals were urging a
direct attack upon the capital, Hitler ordered them to concentrate
upon a drive south into the Ukraine and towards the oil of the
Caucasus. The Germans rapidly penetrated as far as Stalingrad on the
River Volga, and Hitler became obsessed with the necessity of
capturing the city. By September his troops were fighting in its
streets. But the Russians resisted heroically, and after breaking
out from the city, encircled and captured a number of German
divisions and high-ranking officers. It was this sudden collapse at
Stalingrad which turned the tide of the war in Russia. Paul Carell
demonstrates clearly in this definitive account the strategic issues
of the Campaign, its origins and significance, Hitler's tactical
blunders and his generals' achievements in spite of them. Includes
stunning color and black and white photographs, that have easily
stood the test of time in their dramatic appeal.

THE
ESTONIAN SOLDIER IN WORLD WAR II
Mart Laar, C,O,
A monumental album with ca 1500 illustrations about Estonian soldiers in
World War II
Photos taken in Estonia in the summer of 1939 show a country looking
peacefully and joyfully into the future, a country without any inkling
of the terrifying events soon to descend upon it. In his Independence
Day parade speech on 24 February 1939 president Konstantin Päts stated
that Estonia’s only wish was to live in peace and stay away from wars
and conflicts. And this was indeed the case. However, history went its
own way, and nobody cared about what small Estonia wanted. The Soviet
occupation and annexation of Estonia in 1940 also meant that from this
time, Estonian men could no longer wear their own army’s uniform during
World War II. Either voluntarily or compulsorily it had to be replaced
by German, Russian, Finnish, British or US uniforms or insignia. In
spite of the uniform worn, most Estonian men who fought in WWII wanted
the war to end with the restoration of Estonian freedom. In some cases
this goal was completely clear, in other cases it had to be hidden.
Service in different armies also led to many cases where Estonians were
forced to fight other Estonians. Estonians confronting Estonians on the
battlefield suffered the tragedy of fratricidal war. World War II was
particularly tragic for Estonia, because in spite of the sacrifices, the
war still ended with the destruction of Estonian independence. However,
resistance against foreign occupation continued after the end of the
battles in Europe. Estonian independence was not achieved without
bloodshed, only the last phase of restoring independence passed without
the sacrifice of life. Although Estonia succeeded in restoring its
independence in 1991, for Estonia World War II actually ended only on 31
August 1994, when the last uninvited foreign soldier left Estonian
territory. Tens of thousands of Estonian men and women had given their
lives for the arrival of that day. The following album is
dedicated to their memory.

THE
ESTONIAN LEGION IN WORDS AND PICTURES
Mart Laar, BOOK IS IN ENGLISH, C,O, Despite my frequent pleas, the
publishers in Estonia used little packing and the books received have
slightly bumped corners. Includes a CD of origina music of the Estonian
Legion.
During its combat career the Estonian Legion carried several names. It was,
in fact, only called a legion for a brief period, then the Waffen-SS 3rd
Estonian Brigade, and later the Waffen-SS 20th Estonian Division, which name
was further adorned with the words Volunteer or Waffen-Grenadier. The
Legion, designated a Brigade, was created in March/April 1943, seeing action
against the Soviets until the end of the year. It was expanded to a division
in January 1944, and saw action in the epic battles at Narva, April through
August 1944. It then withdrew into East Prussia, where it fought as well as
in Silesia, winter/spring 1944/45. It surrendered to the Soviets in May
1945.
The fate of the legionnaires was tough. Many had to pay for their oaths with
their lives, others with incarceration, the labour camp or other
repressions. It was sufficient to drop a hint that somebody had fought "on
the wrong side" in the war to get him fired or to have his studies blocked.
Therefore many tried to hide their pasts in any way possible. Even so, the
occupying Soviet régime did not succeed in breaking the spirit of these men,
and many of them lived to see the 24th February 1989, when the Estonian blue
black and white flag flew again from Long Hermann tower in Tallinn.
The fighting spirit and fighting capacity of the Estonian soldier has been
admired and recognised through time. Not without reason was Alfons Rebane's
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross supplemented with the Oak Leaves in the
last days of the war. Rebane was a talented soldier and military leader who
became legendary during his own lifetime. Fifteen times he succeeded in
bringing his men out of encirclement. After breaking out of the Oppeln
encirclement in March 1945, close to the end of the war, Rebane returned to
bring out the entire German staff , an act in which he succeeded
brilliantly. Worthy of similar recognition are Knight's Cross holders Paul
Maitla, Harald Riipalu and Harald Nugiseks, as well as a number of other
Estonian soldiers who performed heroic deeds in battle.
The present picture album provides an overview of the Estonian Legion's
activities from its creation in 1942 until the end of the war, and of the
legionnaires' fates after the war. The stress has been put on recently
discovered and as yet unpublished photographs and other illustrative
material from various collections. The text is divided into 12 chapters
dealing with the activities of the Legion and its veterans, giving an
overview of the most important events and personalities.
