16. A STRANGE ENEMY PEOPLE: GERMANS UNDER THE BRITISH 1945-50
Patricia Meehan, C,

Britain had no real model for its administration in the British zone of German following WWII other than colonial ones. Widespread corruption flourished in a climate of "anything goes" where millions of German citizens were homeless or without food, fuel or other neciessities, and an overblown bureaucracy bedevilled the British administration. This book tells the story of British occupation from the point of view of defeated Germans and the British whose job it was to pick up the pieces. To my knowledge the first study from the German perspective on British rule to be written.

300 pp.
$50.00

20. A HISTORY OF FASCISM 1914-1945,
Stanley Payne, C,

This is by far the best
and most objective book every written on the subject. Though a large part of
the book focuses on Germany and Italy, there isn't any fascist movement that
is left untouched, including Eastern Europe, Asia, and the west. This book
makes a nice companion to "Forgotten Axis" as it describes the political
ideologies that motivated people to join the Axis side during the Second
World War, the author also provides a huge bibliography, highly recommended,

unvarnished words. Includes the McCarthy probes and Muller's part in them,
the Korean war, CIA plans to overthrow foreign governments, as well as more
personal items such as Muller's affairs with wives of CIA officials, his
marriage to a wealthy Washington socialite, his dealings in stolen art, his

ideas and regarded himself as the activist who could implement them,

learn how history was shaped by quirks and compusions at the highest levels
of the Third Reich. Most of the 400 photos have never been published and
drawn from the author's personal collection of Nazi memorabilia, one of the
largest of the world and depict such revealing items as Hitler's darned socks

Third Reich, from tableware to gold matchbook cases, an unusual and
fascinating book,

40. THE SEARCH FOR GESTAPO MULLER,
Charles Whiting, C,

on April 29, 1945,
Gestapo Chief Heinrich Muller walked out of Hitler's bunker and disappeared
off the face of the earth. During the cold war, the Americans and Russians
agreed on little, but did agree on one thing, Muller never existed. Drawing
on international contacts, Whiting takes on the greatest unsolved mystery of
the Third Reich: the true role and subsequent whereabouts of Muller. The few
experts who would admit to knowing his name offered contradictory assessments
that sound like a smokescreen. Muller is dead, he is alive, and not only that
wrote three volumes of memoirs (see above). Whiting at last unravels the
mystery and cover up, (note this is the publisher's blurb, color me skeptical
until I read the book myself!),

50. HITLER'S TABLE TALK,
Adolf Hitler, C,

this is a terrific study, perhaps
one of the best looks into Hitler himself. During the war years, Hitler on
many occasions held talks late into the evening with friends, staff or
others. The topics discussed varied widely, from the situation in Europe,
animal rights, the US, and many other philosophical topics or light hearted
topics. All of these discussions were recorded at the time. This was Hilter
late at night, probably more relaxed and more open and honest than at any
other time. At the end of the war these recordings were found and published
in the early 50's, but quickly sold out, and second hand copies have been
pretty scarce and hard to find. But now a new quality hardcover edition has
been published . This book is one fascinating read, you can almost picture
yourself there and witnessing a Hitler very different from his public image
or in official duty. I can assure readers that this isn't a fake or some type
of post war fabrication, all of the book is genuine and one of the best
source book on Hitler published,

55. A TERRIBLE REVENGE: THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF THE EAST EUROPEAN GERMANS,
1944-1050,
Alfred-Maurice de Zayas, S,

recounts the events that unfolded
during the first few-months of 1945 in Germany's historic eastern provinces.
This tragedy, that was the extermination of an 800-year old civilization in
Eastern Europe, is regrettably an event that still remains an unknown, even
in modern western intellectual circles. De Zayas' book decribes the harrowing
tale that the 13 million eastern Germans faced: the largest ethnic-cleansing
of human beings, the largest maritime evacuation of civilians, and the most
horrific naval disasters in history. The book is a monument to the great
cruelty and depravity that mankind is capable of, and the little dignity that
even moral powers can have for their victims. It is a dedication to the
millions that suffered because of their ethnic origin and to the 2.5 million
Germans that vanished. Today, the survivors and relatives of these expellees
acount for 1/5 of the German population. This book will be intstrumental in
understanding the future evolution of Polish-German and Czech-German affairs,

180 pp.
$16.00

56. LOOK TO GERMANY,
Stanley McClatchie, S,O,

originally written in 1936 and
published in Germany by Heinrich Hoffmann, this was and still is a very
controversial book. The author, an American, had lived for some years in
Germany prior to the Nazi Party ascent to power. Clearly the author was
impressed by the consolidation of political power that Hitler had engineered,
but he was also very impressed by the industrial, technical and social
revolution that had taken place. McClatchie wrote Look To Germany in an
effort to explain how he felt about the changes he witnessed in Germany under
National Socialism. He new and wrote that, Look To Germany would be seen as
Nazi Propaganda by many, and in the narrowest sense of the word it certainly
was. When WWII began, American owners of the English language edition of Look
To Germany discarded the book in an effort to avoid the appearance of being
Nazi sympathizers. After the war all editions of the book were considered so
dangerous by the Allies that de-Nazification commissions sought them out for
destruction. Look to Germany is in fact absolutely indispensable to any
genuine understanding of the origins of WWII in Europe. Today the book is so
rare (getting $300+ in the second hand book market) that it is generally
unavailable to researchers. This is an exact replica and includes 300
full-page, half page and double page photos, oversize with laminated covers,

252 pp.
$30.00

57. NEMESIS AT POTSDAM: THE ANGLO-AMERICANS AND THE EXPULSION OF THE GERMANS,
Alfred De Zayas, S,

Germans from most of central and eastern Europe, a process which over two
million did not survive. How the extraordinary event came about, the role
played by the US and Britain in authorizing the transfer, and if necessary
for peace in Europe is all covered in this revised edtion. A classic and
brilliant study, author of THE WEHRMACHT WAR CRIMES BUREAU, #80 in Das
Heer,

$20.00

62. HITLER'S NATIVE LAND,
Ray Cowdery, S, O,

this book brings a great deal of
new and hard to obtain information to the study of Hitler. 15 pages of the
book are reproductions of a heavily illustrated German booklet published in
Linz, Germany in April 1938 to celebrate the political union of Austria with
Nazi Germany. That booklet focuses in substantial detail on the buildings,
towns, people and places connected with the birth and childhood of Hitler,
and is accurately translated into English. Cowdery has also in over 16 years
of travel to the area, sought out and photographed many of the buildings and
significant sites that were central to Hitler's childhood so that readers can
see what they look like today. The photos are augmented with rare period maps
of Oberosterreich, special related graphics and several maps drawn
specifically for this book, 145 photos,

96 pp.
$20.00

63. AT HITLER'S SIDE: THE MEMOIRS OF HITLER'S LUFTWAFFE ADJUTANT,
Nicolaus von Below, C,

von Below was a 29 year old pilot when Goering selected him for
the position of Hitler's Luftwaffe adjutant. He was with Hilter at every
stage of WWII, and his account is a superb source describing life in Hitler's
inner circle and at headquarters. He provides fascinating insight into how
Hitler planned the invasions of Poland and Russia, what he thought of Britain
and America, why he placed his faith in the V-1 and V-2 projects and much
more. Von Below was also present at the assassination attempt in July 1944
and records the effect on Hitler and his followers. Von Below was the last of
Hitler's close military entourage to emerge from the bunker alive. His frank
memoir will appeal to anyone interested in how Hitler ran his war,

still swirling controversies surrounding Hess especially his flight to
Scotland in 1941, and was the man who really parachuted out of the plane
really Hess, with confidence, profiling the man, the milieu, and the
uppermost echelons of the Nazi hierarchy. The conclusion, Hess was indeed

75.  REINHOLD HEYDRICH THE BIOGRAPHY: VOLUME 2, ENIGMA
Max Williams, C,O,

Volume 2 details the life of Heydrich from the beginning of the Second World War, his involvement in the Jewish question and posting as acting 'Reichsprotector' for Bohemia-Moravia. Leading through until Heydrich's assassination in 1942, his 'State Funeral' and continuing with the precarious life of his wife Lina and their family until her death in 1985. This second volume contains over 500 photographs and illustrations on 272 pages. Even includes the complete English translation of his entire autopsy report! Ten years in the making, the authors have managed to assemble a unique collection of photographs that bring to life this biography of Hitler's probable heir apparent, Reinhard Heydrich. A man considered so dangerous by the British, they had him assassinated. This extraordinary man who rose to become second to Himmler within the SS, controlling the entire Security Service had a life of controversy, which continues to this day. Labeled as the author of the 'Final Solution' to the Jewish question, Heydrich is branded by some as a 20th century Machiavellian. Others in admiration of his intelligence, sporting and musical talents, have bestowed upon him the iconic status of a Renaissance man. Matching deluxe casebound covers as volume 1. The definitive biography.

78. NAZI MILLIONAIRES: THE COLD WAR WINNERS
Kenneth Alford, C,

Author digs into the dirty little secrets of post-war Europe and American to uncover evidence of collusion at worst and the turning of a blind eye at best, which enabled many leading Nazi's to escape apprehension and to hold onto their ill-gotten gains. Alford also shows how the Reich Main Security Office squirreled away vast fortunes. Towards the end of the war, blackmail, unrestrained looting, theft and the bartering of human lives became sources of great profit for these men. These RSHA managers, all of whom are named in this book, preyed on the misfortunes of others. Alford also shows how they walked away free men after the war.

80. THE STRANGE DEATH OF HEINRICH HIMMLER
Hugh Thomas, C,

In 1946, M16's most talented, if treacherous, agent, Kim Philby, was not convinced that the story of Himmler's death made any sense at all. Philby realized that a man of Himmler's organizational genius, a plotter of great intricacy and sophistication who recognized Germany's inevitable defeat as early as 1943, was unlikely to have just blundered into the arms of the Allies. What really happened? Thomas sets out to answer Philby's question and has uncovered a maze of corruption, high finance, political gambles, and international intrigue. This book unearths not just Himmler's grave, but reveals secrets that have long remained buried, and shadowy figures who would rather it stay that way. Illustrated with photos.

84. REICHSMINISTER RUDOLF HESS
C,O German text

A beautiful photo book from Germany on Rudolf Hess. I mean this is fantastic. It ranges from Hess' early years all the way to some of the last photos taken of him at Spandau. There are also many color photos and color plates of Hess, and various places in Berlin. Text is in German but this is mostly a photo book, by far the best I have seen on Hess, and I haven't seen any of these save maybe a couple. Most of the photos are of superior quality, by the same publisher that brought the full color books on the Berghoff and Wolfslair.

160 pp.
$45.00

85. REICHS AUTOBAHN: BEAUTY IN NATURE AND TECHNIQUE
Arend Vosselman, C,O, German Text

I may have butchered the title but you get the point. Another really fantastic photo book from the same publisher as above. This book features remarkable photos of the planning and construction of the autobahn, and also many beautiful color plates of the designs and also many gorgeous full color photos of the autobahn itself and how it looks it wonderfully mixes in with the countryside. Nowhere else shows the true marvel of this monumental project like the photos in this book. The architecture and design were well ahead of its time. Very highly recccomended.

86. HITLER'S PLEASURE SHIPS
Heinz Schon, C,O, German text

well the name could certainly mean many things, but this is another German import photo book like the two above that vividly shows German citizens taking trips on these ships. Hitler awarded hard work to the common worker with these kinds of trips on ships and at the time was one of the number of motivating factors that had German workers working very hard. This book again is filled with dramatic color photos of the ships, the people traveling on them, brochures for the trips and photos of the places traveled to. Many of the photos are of the ships themselves, exterior and interior. A beautiful book.

87. HITLER'S VOLKSSTURM: THE NAZI MILITIA AND THE FALL OF GERMANY, 1944-1945
David Yelton, C,

Hitler played his final card in WWII by mobilizing all German civilian males between 16 and 60 and indoctrinating them for a final apocalyptic defense of the Reich. Yelton provides new insights into why the German high command sought this means to prolong an unwinnable war - and why so many civilians chose to fight to the bitter end. This is the only book in English and the most comprehensive in any language on the German militia, illuminating its role and contributions to the German war effort and shedding new light on the last days of the Third Reich. It examines the militia's strategic purpose, organization, training, and combat performance on both war fronts and explores factors contributing to its sporadic tactical successes and its overall failure. Yelton also reveals why German leadership chose to assemble such last-ditch units rather than negotiating for peace and also why civilians in these units were more than willing to serve. Pathbreaking in both scope and depth it ultimately provides a more complete portrait of the Third Reich during the final phase of the war, 34 photographs,

89. THE GREEN SHIRTS AND THE OTHERS: A HISTORY OF FASCISM IN HUNGARY AND ROMANIA
Nicholas M. Nagy-Talavera, C,

This book is a newly revised and updated edition of the author's classic work originally published in 1970 and take it from me, nearly impossible to find. This book is the standard work in English on the history of Fascism in Romania and Hungary. It is the first comprehensive and comparative work in English and the author present as objective account of the history of the two countries from 1918 to 1945 and the role of Fascist movements during those years. He analyzed the rise of these movements - the Arrow Cross in Hungary and the Legion of the Archangel Michael in Romania - their evolution and growth during the interwar period, and the periods in which each movement came to power in its respective country. The different situations in which these movements rose to power and the differences in their ideologies are amply demonstrated by the author as he draws conclusions and parallels from the comparative history of the two movements

90. HITLER AND HIS GENERALS
Helmut Heiber and David Glantz, C,

In 1942, as Germany's military fortunes began to wane, an angry Hitler, frustrated with his generals, ordered a transcript made of his daily military conferences that took place at what was referred to as the `Wolfschanze,` the name given to German army high command headquarters wherever Hitler was located, of every word that was said so that there would be no confusion as to his orders. Of the more than 100,000 pages recorded, about 1,000 survived destruction in 1945 and make up the material of this book. Never before published in English, this completely updated and restored edition contains newly discovered documents never published before in their entirety. This book is an amazing and irreplaceable historical document that is required reading for any scholar or student of the Second World War, an absolutely huge book.

94. GREAT MILITARY PARADES OF THE THIRD REICH
Werner Landhof, C,O, Germant text, english caption sheet provided.

The military parade in German and Prussian history is a long and time-honored tradition. These pageants reached their pinnacles of visual effect during the period of the Third Reich, as demonstrations of the power and majesty of the new Germany and as an open and direct slap in the face to the dictates of the Versailles Treaty. Military Parades were held regularly on Heroes? Memorial Days, Hitler?s Birthday, the Nuremberg Party Rally Days, occasions to honor foreign dignitary guests, and as celebrations of major military victories. This photo album shows the military parades in Germany as they have never before been seen since they actually occurred. Ninety-seven black and white and thirty color photographs comprise the body of this work. While most of the black and white photographs are full page or gate-fold (i.e. take up two full pages), twenty-three of the full color photos are gate-fold, with five being full page. The result is nothing less than a visual military spectacular.

95. THEY CAME TO DESTROY AMERICA: THE FBI GOES TO WAR AGAINST NAZI SPIES & SABOTEURS BEFORE AND DURING WWII
Stan Cohen, S,O,

While the greater part of this book deals with the German landings on the east coast of the US - Operation Pastorius, June 1942 and Operation Magpie November 1944 - it also delves into some pre-war Nazi spy operations, the subversive organizations in the US and several other operations planned but not executed such as Operation Pelican. Other stories and photographs pertinent to the subject are also included. The stories of Pastorius and Magpie have been well-documented through the years and are important today as a predecessor of future military tribunals proposed for accused terrorists. This is the first time that a thorough photographic search of these operations and other Nazi incursions within and on American shores has been attempted, with the stories and photos evidence put together in one volume. The author has searched FBI files and dozens of books and documents to piece together the stories included in this book. This book is heavily illustrated with photographs and documents.

97. HITLER'S SECOND BOOK
Adolf Hitler, C,

In 1958, while directing the microfilming and organization of a trove of archives that the U.S. forces had taken from the Nazis at the end of WWII, historian Weinberg (A World at Arms) discovered the manuscript of a second book that Hitler had written but never published. The manuscript was published in German in 1961, accompanied by Weinberg's annotations, but this is the first authoritative English version (a pirated and poor translation appeared in the 1960s). In this book Hitler dwells at length on foreign policy, and outlines a strategy of alliance with Fascist Italy and Great Britain. (He actually believed that Britain would accept a German-dominated European continent so long as Germany did not challenge the overseas British empire.) He also foresees an inevitable clash with the United States. This provides solid historical background on Hitler's thinking in the late 1920s, when his party was nothing more than a tiny, radical sect.

99. HIMMLER'S CRUSADE: THE NAZI EXPEDITION TO FIND THE ORIGINS OF THE ARYAN RACE
Christopher Hale, C,

This book is about an SS mission through British India to the sacred mountains of Tibet in search of the remnants of the Aryan people, the lost master race. Based on a wide range of previously unused sources, this intriguing book reveals the mission–a pet project of Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler–to be the result of both a bizarre historical fantasy and a strategy to provoke insurgency in British India. Providing rare glimpses into Himmler’s SS stronghold, this riveting tale sheds new light on the occult component of the racial theories that obsessed Himmler.

118. HITLER AT MY SIDE
Hans Bauer, C,

These are the memoirs of Lieutenant General Hans Bauer, Chief Pilot to Adolf Hitler. Printed way back in 1986 and long out of print, these copies have some slight spotting due to sitting in storage in the south for many years. Excellent personal account of Hitler by favorite pilot. Bauer was with Hitler during many events, including the last days in the Bunker. Bauer was also the commander of the Reichschancellery Squadron. Besides giving wonderful personal insights to Hitler and other leaders and his witnessing of many major events during the war, he provides details of the barbaric mistreatment suffered as a prisoner for ten years in Soviet prisons after the war. This is not a typical bashing of Hitler and passing the buck type book, but an honest, objective account that commands the reader's attention from cover to cover. Illustrated with photos.

125. A HITLER YOUTH: GROWING UP IN GERMANY IN THE 1930'S
Henry Metelmann, C,

This book is an autobiography of a railway worker's son who joined the Hitler Youth at the age of 12 and became involved in the Nazi movement which was passionately opposed by his parents - the conflict between his Nazism and his father's socialism is a central theme. This book will be of interest not only to the general reader but to historians, political scientists, sociologists and others interested in this unique period in German history. The book begins in the pre-Nazi period and covers all aspects of life in Hamburg's strong socialist working class community: street play, visits to the countryside, family gatherings and school life as well as the scout movement which was eventually to become the Hitler Youth. This settled society was disrupted by the arrival of the Nazis who used violence, propoganda and skillfully orchestrated gatherings and marches to achieve total political dominence. The author gives an account of the beating and intimidation of individual opponents of the Nazi regime - trade unionists and others - and the climate of fear and violence which gradually transformed his family, friends and local community. We see the rise of Hitler and the terrible consequences that followed through this detailed and sometimes painfully honest personal account.

126. UNTIL THE FINAL HOUR: HITLER'S LAST SECRETARY
Traudl Junge, C,

At age 22 Junge became the private secretary of Adolf Hitler and served him for two and a half years, right up to the bitter end. Her memoir, which she wrote not long after the war when memories were still fresh, offers a unique glimpse of the human face of Hitler. Junge observed the intimate workings of Hitler's administration, she traveled back and forth with him between the Wolf's lair and the Berchtesgaden and finally to the bunker in Berlin. She typed correspondence and speeches, including Hitler's last will and testament. She and the other secretaries ate their meals and spent evenings with him, as well as with Eva Braun and high-ranking German officials. She was close enough to hear the bomb that was intended to assassinate Hitler in the Wolf's Lair, she also heard the shot with which Hitler ended his life. But while Junge was witness to crucial events in Hitler's last years, it was her precise, detailed observations of the outwardly normal, almost mundane quality of day-to-day life with Hitler that prove very interesting in her memoir. Published only last year in German, this is the first English edition, extremely important and fascinating book. Cloth edition is out of print.

Perceptive, illuminating, and grandly ambitious, The Devil's Disciples is above all a powerful chronological narrative, showing how the personalities of Hitler's inner circle developed and how their jealousies and constant intrigues affected the regime, the war, and Hitler himself. 16 pages of photographs. 134. LEGISLATING THE HOLOCAUST: THE BERNARD LOESENER MEMOIRS AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
Karl Schleunes editor, S,

From April 1933 to early 1943, Bernhard Loesener served as the official “Jewish Expert” in the German Third Reich’s Ministry of the Interior, the government body responsible for the Nazi’s legislative assault on German Jewry. In that role, he personally drafted much of the legislation, the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 that gradually dispossessed, disenfranchised, and dehumanized the Jews of Nazi Germany. During the first six years of Nazi rule, the seminal period of government-sponsored anti-Semitism, Loesener frequently kept the minutes of crucial inter-ministerial conferences concerned with the “Jewish Question.” As observer and participant, his experiences were unparalleled and in 1950, Loesener wrote a memoir that sought to explain—and justify—his actions during the ten-year escalation of Nazi oppression that resulted, to his professed horror, in the Final Solution. Although published in 1961, this is its first appearance in English, and only released in paperback.

136. TARGET AMERICA: HITLER'S PLAN TO ATTACK THE UNITED STATES
James Duffy, C

Did Hitler mean to pursue global conquest once he had completed his mastery of Europe? In this startling reassessment of Hitler's strategic aims, Duffy argues that he fully intended to bring the war to America once his ambitions in the Eurasian heartland were achieved. Detailed here for the first time are the Third Reich's plans for a projected series of worldwide offensives using the new secret weapons emerging from wartime research. Duffy also recounts other Axis schemes to attack American cities through the use of multi-stage missiles, submarine launched rockets, and suicide missions against ships in the New York harbor. Taken together, these plans reveal just how determined the Axis powers were to attack the United States. Illustrated with photos, line drawings and maps.

141. HITLER'S WAR DIRECTIVES 1939-1956
Hugh Trevor-Roper, S,

The Second World War was Hitler’s personal war in many senses. He intended it, prepared for it, chose the moment for launching it, planned its course, and, on several occasions between 1939 and 1942, claimed to have won it. Although the aims he sought to achieve were old nationalist aspirations, the fact that the policy and strategy for their realization were imposed so completely by Hitler meant that if victory had come, it would have been very much a personal triumph: the ultimate failure was thus a personal one too. This book presents all of Hitler’s directives, from preparations for the invasion of Poland (31 August 1939) to his last desperate order to his troops on the Eastern Front (15 April 1945), whom he urges to choke the Bolshevik assault ‘in a bath of blood’. They provide a fascinating insight into Hitler’s mind and how he interpreted and reacted to events as they unfolded. The book also has detailed notes which link the Fuhrer’s orders and explain the consequences of his directives and how the Allies responded to them.

142. THE THIRD REICH THEN AND NOW
Tony Le Tissier, C,O,

Sixty years have elapsed since the cataclysmic demise of Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich. In this book Tony Le Tissier (author of Berlin Then and Now) traces the rise of Hitler, the Nazi Party and its ramifications, together with its deeds and accomplishments, during the twelve years that the Third Reich existed within today's boundaries of the Federal Republics of Germany and Austria. The homes — or sites of them — of the dramatis personnae; the Nazi legends of their martyrs; the sites of the former Third Reich shrines at the Obersalzberg; in Munich; Nuremberg; Bayreuth, and in Berlin; the Hitler Youth schools and the Party colleges; the 'euthanasia' killing centres; the concentration camps, and much much more. Tony then follows the progress of Hitler's war: from the attack on Poland on September 1, 1939 to defeat in Berlin and the final round-up at Flensburg in May 1945. A final chapter covers the de-Nazification of Germany, the whole volume being illustrated by 'then and now' comparison photographs which are the central theme of After the Battle. 143. NEMESIS OF POWER: THE GERMAN ARMY IN POLITICS 1918-1945
John Wheeler-Bennett, S

Sir John W. Wheeler-Bennett tells the story of how the German Army, having survived the disaster of 1918, proceeded to dominate the political life of the German Republic, exercising a virtually paramount degree of power and influence by its very withdrawal from the active arena of politics: and of how, when later it was mistaken enough to play politics instead of controlling them, it began a descent which only ended in abject defeat - militarily, politically and spiritually. The author reveals the extent of the responsibility of the Army for bringing the Nazi regime to power, for tolerating the infamies of that regime once it had attained power, and for not taking the measures - at a time when only the Army could have taken them - to remove it from power. In this second edition a new foreword by Professor Richard Overy sets Wheeler-Bennett's classic text in a modern context.

144. COMMANDERS OF AUSCHWITZ: THE SS OFFICERS WHO RAN THE NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP 1940-1945
Jeremy Dixon, C,O,

Finally a single volume detailing the SS officers that served in the largest and most infamous of Hitler’s concentration camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau. This volume begins with a brief history of this concentration camp and then details briefly the different departments that made up the command structure of this camp. The book goes on to describe the evacuation and liberation of Auschwitz and some of the major trials are described before the author gives brief descriptions of what Auschwitz-Birkenau is like today. The second part of the book is a biographical study of the SS officers in alphabetical order. The SS officers described inside this book were the commanders of the camp, the men with power, some with power over life and death. Inside you will meet the commandants, Lagerführers, doctors, dentists, Gestapo officials, adjutants, administration officers, and sentry commanders. Some went on to fight at the front and won awards for bravery, others helped to save the lives of the inmates, and of course others were there to help with the administration of the Holocaust. The biographical details of the SS officers have been set out in the following way. Under the name is the last rank held by the officer, with his most important position obtained at Auschwitz. Next is the officers SS number and Nazi Party number where known, followed by his promotions, which in some cases included both the Allgemeine-SS (General SS) and Waffen-SS (Armed SS). The biographical detail of this book alone adds vast clarity to the gaps in biographical information in other books on Auschwitz. Inside this book are the details of 162 SS officers who served at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Along with over 140 rare black and white photographs, some never published before, is a detailed appendix and index.

146. HITLER'S FORTUNE
Chris Whetton, C,

In 1918 Adolf Hitler was penniless: within 25 years he was probably the richest man in Europe. In his fascinating book the author sets out to discover not only the extent of Hitler's fortune but how it was amassed and with whose help. He finds that royalties of Mein Kampf represent only the tip of the iceberg. His publishing company Eher Verlag and his fund Adolf Hitler Spende, which many 'voluntarily' contributed to, turn out to be much more important. We learn how Hitler's attraction to the opposite sex proved hugely lucrative. This book also traces what happened to the property, the funds, the art collection, and other items after 1945 and reveals who is - and who is trying to -profit today from the legacy of Adolf Hitler. Amongst items never before revealed is recently discovered evidence for two of Hitler's bank accounts; the truth about the financing of Hitler's publishing empire; and many other previously undisclosed facts.

147. HITLER'S ALPINE RETREAT
James Wilson, C,

The Germans had no equals at ferociously exploiting new methods of reaching the general population with their political message. The humble postcard became in the 1930's a powerful tool for winning the hearts and minds of the German people. In this unique book James Wilson demonstrates, using 270 original German postcards from his personal collection, how Hitler's obsession with the beautiful and normally peaceful Bavarian mountain area of Berchtesgadener Land was used to project a powerful but totally misleading image of this regime. Haus Wachenfeld, the simple Alpine cottage purchased by Hitler in 1933, evolved to become the Berghof, the Southern headquarters of the Third Reich, and second only to Berlin in terms of importance. Hitler's Alpine Retreat offers an extraordinary atmospheric opportunity to view the landscape, buildings (mostly now long disappeared) and close associates of the Fuhrer. Each of the superb contemporary images records a unique moment of history which would otherwise have been lost forever.

148. GERMANY AND THE AXIS POWERS: FROM COALITION TO COLLAPSE
Richard DiNardo, C

It seemed that whenever Mussolini acted on his own, it was bad news for Hitler. Indeed, the Führer’s relations with his Axis partners were fraught with an almost total lack of coordination. Compared to the Allies, the coalition was hardly an alliance at all. Focusing on Germany’s military relations with Italy, Romania, Hungary, and Finland, Richard DiNardo unearths a wealth of little-known facts that reveal how the Axis coalition largely undermined Hitler’s objectives from the Eastern Front to the Balkans, Mediterranean, and North Africa. DiNardo argues that the Axis military alliance was doomed from the beginning by a lack of common war aims, the absence of a unified command structure, and each nation’s fundamental mistrust of the others. Germany was disinclined to make the kinds of compromises that successful wartime partnerships demanded and, because Hitler insisted on separate pacts with each nation, Italy and Finland often found themselves conducting counterproductive parallel wars on their own. DiNardo’s detailed assessments of ground, naval, and air operations reveal precisely why the Axis allies were so dysfunctional as a collective force, sometimes for seemingly mundane but vital reasons—a shortage of bilingual interpreters, for example. His analysis covers coalition warfare at every level, demonstrating that some military services were better at working with their allies than others, while also pointing to rare successes, such as Rommel’s effective coordination with Italian forces in North Africa. In the end, while some individual Axis units fought with distinction—if not on par with the vaunted Wehrmacht—and helped Germany achieve some of its military aims, the coalition’s overall military performance was riddled with disappointments. Breaking new ground, DiNardo’s work enlarges our understanding of Germany’s defeat while at the same time offering a timely reminder of the challenges presented by coalition warfare.

149. AT THE HEART OF THE REICH: THE SECRET DIARY OF HITLER'S ARMY ADJUTANT
Major Gerhard Engel, C,

Major Gerhard Engel was Hitler’s Army Adjutant from March 1938 to March 1943. Remarkably, this atmospheric account from a member of Hitler’s closest circle has never been published in English before. During his years with Hitler, Engel kept the diary in the form of six notebooks. After the war, he added material to shed further light on certain events, military and political decisions and Hitler’s attitude to particular problems. His diary covers the decision-making process behind crucial military actions, including the annexation of Austria, the invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the war against Russia. He also addresses the intrigue within Hitler’s inner circle and his casual conversations with Halder, Guderian and Brauchitsch, among others.

This book documents mostly in striking full color the results of the Allied bombing raid in Germany. These photos like none other published in the past really show the destruction in gruesome detail. I have heard about these photos existing in the past, the photographer ordered by the SS to destroy them, but he kept them and now for the first time we can see the the results of the bombing terror during the later part of the war. Also includes color photo of the Luftwaffe defense by air and defense on the ground, as well as a nice section of color portraits of Luftwaffe pilots taking part in the defense of Germany. German text only but eventually there will be an English translation sheet for the color photo captions that I will send to purchasers of the book.

151. HIMMLER'S SECRET WAR: THE COVERT PEACE NEGOTIATIONS OF HEINRICH HIMMLER
Martin Allen, C,

Martin Allen has achieved pre-eminence as a researcher and writer specializing in the Second World War. In this, his third major book, Heinrich Himmler, Head of the SS, emerges as a man with a huge personal agenda. Having secured for himself an unassailable position by manipulating Hitler into wiping out the SS's left-wing rivals, the SA, in The Night of the Long Knives, he continued to nurture political supremacy for himself while Hitler fought his military war. At the heart of Himmler's Secret War is the turning point of the war when, following the German defeat at Stalingrad, Himmler recognized that Germany would lose. Through his trusted envoy, Walter Schellenberg, he devoted much energy to negotiating his intended post-war role as the man who would lead Germany. He believed his intermediary, the British Ambassador in Sweden, Victor Mallet, was in direct contact with Winston Churchill. In fact, he was the victim of a highly effective sting by the Political Warfare Executive (PWE).

152. HEINRICH HIMMLER'S CAMELOT
Stephen Cook, C,O,

Heinrich Himmler's Camelot documents the history of the former SS-School House Wewelsburg. The Wewelsburg Castle was chosen to be the training center for spiritual enlightenment of the Führer´s elite Praetorian Guard, the SS, and to be the "Center of the New World" for a Thousand-Year Reich. Heinrich Himmler, appointed by Adolf Hitler as Reichsführer-SS, became responsible for researching and documenting centuries of Germanic culture, as well as defining the ideology of the Black Corps. This pictorial book also reveals captivating parallels between the phenomena of the Wewelsburg and the legendary King Arthur´s Camelot. Authors Stephen Cook and Stuart Russell have amassed this volume from years of research and expertise of factual history pertaining to Heinrich Himmler and the Wewelsburg Castle. Features over 200 b/w photographs, plus numerous illustrations and documents, all available for the first time in an English-language publication; Plus, an exclusive 16-page color section with 31 photographs, including a rare, never-before seen, full page of Heinrich Himmler's death mask; Also, a fold-out showing a unique design of the "Twelve Knights of the Round Table";

153. THE YOUNG HITLER I KNEW
August Kubizek, C,

August Kubizek met Adolf Hitler in 1904 while they were both competing for standing room at the opera. Their mutual passion for music created a strong bond, and over the next four years they became close friends. Kubizek describes a reticent young man, painfully shy, yet capable of bursting into hysterical fits of anger if anyone disagreed with him. The two boys would often talk for hours on end; Hitler found Kubizek to be a very good listener, a worthy confidant to his hopes and dreams. In 1908 Kubizek moved to Vienna and shared a room with Hitler at 29 Stumpergasse. During this time, Hitler tried to get into art school, but he was unsuccessful. With his money fast running out, he found himself sinking to the lower depths of the city: an unkind world of isolation and ‘constant unappeasable hunger’. Hitler moved out of the flat in November, without leaving a forwarding address; Kubizek did not meet his friend again until 1938. The Young Hitler I Knew tells the story of an extraordinary friendship, and gives fascinating insight into Hitler’s character during these formative years. This is the first edition to be published in English since 1955 and it includes important sections which were excised from the original English translation.

James Wyllie, C,

Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering became the leader of the Nazis' economic war machine and supreme commander of the Luftwaffe. His brother Albert, seven years Hermann's junior, loathed Hitler, however, and saved hundreds of people across Europe from Nazi persecution. Despite the profound gulf between their beliefs, each believed sincerely that the other was only doing what he considered to be right.

155. THE REICH CHANCELLERY AND FUHRERBUNKER COMPLEX: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE SEAT OF THE NAZI REGIME
Steven Lehrer, C,O-

Germany’s Nazi government initially made its primary headquarters in one of Berlin’s oldest buildings, the Old Reich Chancellery. Unsatisfied with the building, Adolf Hitler commissioned Albert Speer to design and build a newer, grander structure, and his New Reich Chancellery was completed in early 1939. Hitler described his New Reich Chancellery and other Nazi buildings as his “words of stone,” eternal monuments to the work that he and the Nazi party intended to perpetuate. Frequented by Hitler and his inner circle, the Chancellery witnessed their fanatical plans and was an architectural reflection of Hitler’s megalomania. The Führerbunker, built underneath the Chancellery, became the last refuge of a dying regime; it was here that Hitler retreated to order the destruction of Germany and ultimately to take his own life. This book is a virtual tour of the now demolished Chancellery and Führerbunker. It covers the history of each structure, notes the architectural changes that Hitler made to suit his purposes, and describes the historical events that took place within each building’s walls. Appendices contain a chronology of Reich Chancellors (1871–1945), a detailed list of renovations to the Chancellery, and a register of notable gatherings that took place in the Old Reich Chancellery prior to 1914. Texts of various speeches by Hitler are reproduced, along with a copy of his agreement to occupy Czechoslovakia, which was signed in the Reich Chancellery. 158 photographs & illustrations.

157. HITLER'S OLYMPICS: THE STORY OF THE 1936 GAMES
Anton Rippon, C,

For two weeks in August 1936, Nazi Germany achieved an astonishing propaganda coup when it staged the Olympic Games in Berlin. Hiding their anti-semitism and plans for territorial expansion, the Nazis exploited the Olympic ideal, dazzling visiting spectators and journalists alike with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany. In Hitler's Olympics, Anton Rippon tells the story of those remarkable Games, the first to overtly use the Olympic festival for political purposes. His account, which is illustrated with almost 200 rare photographs of the event, looks at how the rise of the Nazis affected German sportsmen and women in the early 1930s. And it reveals how the rest of the world allowed the Berlin Olympics to go ahead despite the knowledge that Nazi Germany was a police state. Illustrated throughout.

162. THE WAGES OF DESTRUCTION: THE MAKING AND BREAKING OF THE NAZI ECONOMY
Adam Tooze, C,

In this groundbreaking new history, Adam Tooze provides the clearest picture to date of the Nazi war machine and its undoing. There was no aspect of Nazi power untouched by economics—it was Hitler’s obsession and the reason the Nazis came to power in the first place. The Second World War was fought, in Hitler’s view, to create a European empire strong enough to take on the United States. But as The Wages of Destruction makes clear, Hitler’s armies were never powerful enough to beat either Britain or the Soviet Union—and Hitler never had a serious plan as to how he might defeat the United States. The Wages of Destruction is an eye-opening and controversial account that will challenge conventional interpretations of the period.

163. THE WAR AIMS AND STRATEGIES OF ADOLF HITLER
Oscar Pinkus, S,O-

Many have commented upon Hitler’s inexplicable behavior during World War II. He failed to invade England; he neglected his air force; he engaged enemies on multiple fronts. Viewed in terms of Germany’s struggle against the West, these and other actions made little sense. In truth, however, the war against Western powers had little to do with Hitler’s grand plan: to conquer Russia and lands to the east of Germany, eradicate or enslave their populations, and create a vast Teutonic empire. In light of this goal, Hitler’s actions were consistent throughout. In line with his dictum of “All or Nothing,” once Hitler failed to defeat Russia in December 1941, he conducted the rest of the war with the sole purpose of inflicting maximum bloodshed and desolation, including upon Germany itself. Weakened, sensing defeat, he knew he was a drowning man—and he was determined to take friend and foe alike down with him. This evaluation of Hitler’s objectives in World War II expands upon a theory gaining prominence among historians: Hitler’s true motive was a crusade against the East, and he had little interest in waging war with England, much less the United States. It examines the different nature of the war on the Eastern and Western fronts; the disparate treatment afforded the two groups of POWs and civilians; and Hitler’s scorched-earth policy, adopted after his primary objective proved beyond his grasp. In poignant, painful detail, it recreates the Russians’ devastating four-year struggle against Germany, which went much further towards ensuring its defeat than any of the comparatively belated Western efforts. 59 photographs, maps,

164. APOCALYPSE 1945: THE DESTRUCTION OF DRESDEN
David Irving, C,

AT 10:10 P.M. ON THE NIGHT of February 13-14, 1945 the R.A.F. Master Bomber broadcast the cryptic order: 'Controller to Plate-Rack Force: Come in and bomb glow of red T.I.s as planned.' The ill-famed attack on Dresden had begun. The target city was among Germany's largest, but it alone had developed no single major war industry. The German authorities had made it a centre for the evacuation of wounded servicemen, and by February 1945 most schools, restaurants, and public buildings had been converted into military hospitals. In selecting Dresden for this purpose, the German government probably hoped that this, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, often compared with Florence for its graceful Baroque architectural style, would be spared the attentions of the allied bombers. By 1945, the legend was deeply entrenched in the population's mind that Dresden was a city that would never be bombed. It was not to be. In the summer of 1944, the Allies had shelved as inopportune a plan to cripple German civilian morale by delivering one `shattering blow¿ as R.A.F. staff officers termed it on one selected German city. But in February 1945, with the Soviet armies making striking advances in their invasion of Silesia and East Prussia, and when the war's political and military directors were meeting at Yalta, Mr Winston Churchill was urgently in need of some display both of his offensive strength and of his willingness to assist the Russians in their drive westwards. The 'shattering blow' plan was brought out and reexamined. Dresden, the 'virgin target' just seven miles behind the eastern Front, became the victim of Mr Churchill's desire for a spectacular blow. By a combination of delays and poor weather, the raid, the climax of the strategic air offensive against Germany, and the most crushing air-raid of the war, was not delivered until the day that Mr Churchill was departing from Yalta. This is the most recent updated and revised edition.

165. HITLER'S HEADQUARTERS: FROM BEER HALL TO BUNKER, 1920 - 1945
Blaine Taylor, C,O,

Blaine Taylor has written and assembled a fascinating photographic history of Adolf Hitler’s many headquarters, both before and during World War II. Taylor includes all of the private residences, offices, command posts, and even mobile headquarters from which the Nazi dictator planned his rise to power and the conquest of Europe. Taylor recounts the background and physical description of each headquarters while also relating these locations’ importance to the larger story of Nazi Germany and World War II.

Restless, Hitler rarely worked at a desk and was almost always on the move during the war, with headquarters scattered throughout Germany and across the continent from the Ukraine to Belgium. Taylor describes the best-known headquarters, such as Wolf’s Lair, the Berchtesgaden complex, and the Berlin bunker, but he also includes many lesser-known ones such as Hitler’s armored train Amerika, Felsennest near the Belgian border, and the compound codenamed Tannenberg in the Black Forest. Hitler spent a fortune on these varied sites, some of which he never used. Ultimately, and perhaps fittingly, he spent his final days before committing suicide holed up in his extensive bunker deep beneath Berlin. 350 B&W photos; 12 diagrams

168. POLICE BATTALIONS OF THE THIRD REICH
Stephen Campbell, C,O,

The role that the German Police Battalions played in the destruction of the Jews and the Eastern European nationalities that the Third Reich had deemed superfluous or dangerous is little known. Only in the last fifteen years with the opening of the Soviet archives has their role in the deaths of millions become known. The German Police, often aided by local auxiliaries shot at close range over a million people in less than two years. Later in the war the battalions were formed into regiments and absorbed into the SS where they were active in the hunt for partisan bands behind the front lines. In this book you will find a history of each battalion and the men who participated in these actions. Many of these men who survived the war were never tried. Instead they continued their careers in law enforcement with many retiring with pensions from positions of importance. over 120 bw images,

171. UNIFORMED POLICE FORCES OF THE THIRD REICH 1933 - 1945
Phil Nix & Gerorges Jerome, C,O

Germany had no national police force until 1920 when it was formed by the Weimar regime. The National Socialists were instrumental in its development. The duties performed by the Ordnungspolizei were the same as those performed in any other country in peace time. However, it did supervise the professional and voluntary fire services and provided advice to private factory security units. During the war the uniformed police undertook an important new task. it was used to assist the security police in carrying out duties in occupied territories. To this end a total of 38 police regiments and a number of local regiments in occupied territories were formed. Police members were used to raise and man two Waffen-SS divisions to fight alongside the army. The police were at the core of the civil defenses in the Third Reich providing the organization for defense against air raids in towns and industrial complexes. Outstanding service was given in fighting fires and in the protection of members of the population. This book will attempt to show the complete organization of the police forces of the Third Reich and will provide biographical information on the most senior officers of the forces. 192 b/w illustrationsm1 map

174. IN THE BUNKER WITH HITLER
Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven, C,

Throughout the last nine months of the Third Reich, from 23 July 1944 to 29 April 1945, Captain Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven daily attended Hitler’s military briefings with his highest-ranking officers. He also watched—while recording his experiences in his private diaries—as increasingly the gap widened between the reality of the war outside the bunker and Hitler’s willful illusions of imminent victory in the face of absolute ruin. In the last catastrophic week of Hitler’s regime Loringhoven, now holed up night and day in the bunker, saw the final hopes of officers and staff dissolve into drink and fade into suicidal despair. He saw, too, his chance to survive: On April 29, when all communications in the bunker broke down—and with Hitler’s unexpected blessing—he left. On April 30 Hitler was dead.

176. COUNTDOWN TO VALKYRIE: THE JULY PLOT TO ASSASSINATE HITLER
Nigel Jones, C,

Although there were more than 40 plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler, none came closer to success than the July Plot of 1944. The attempt was masterminded by Count von Stauffenberg, a member of the German General Staff, who had been rushed back from Africa after losing his left eye and right hand. For his injuries, he had been decorated as a war hero. Never a supporter of Nazi ideology, he was increasingly attracted by the approaches of the German resistance movement. After a attempt to assassinate Hitler in November 1943 failed, Stauffenberg developed a new plot to kill him at the Wolf's Lair Headquarters on 20th July 1944. Besides the Fuhrer's assassination, Stauffenberg organized plans to take over command of the Germany forces and sue for peace with the Allies. The attempt ultimately failed. Only one bomb was detonated and Hitler was only injured: his life was probably saved because the bomb, hidden in Stauffenberg's suitcase, had been placed behind a heavy table leg which reduced the impact of the black. In remarkable detail, with photographs, explanatory maps and diagrams, author Nigel Jones dissects the lead up to the attempt, the events of the day in minute-by-minute detail, and the aftermath in which the conspirators were hunted down. No other work on the July Plot contains such accessible detail and full explanation of this attempt on Hitler's life. In addition to a forensic analysis of the day, the book includes short biographies of the key characters involved, the first-person recollections of witnesses, and a 'what if' section explaining the likely outcome of a successful assassination. illustrated throughout.

178. THE SKY MY KINGDOM: MEMOIRS OF THE FAMOUS GERMAN WWII TEST PILOT
Hanna Reitsch, C,

The Sky My Kingdom is the fascinating autobiography of the famous World War test pilot - Hanna Reitsch (March 29, 1912 - August 24, 1979). As the war progressed, Reitsch was invited to fly many of Germany's latest (and increasingly desperate) designs, including the rocket-propelled Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, and several larger bombers on which she tested various mechanisms for cutting barrage balloon cables. After crashing on her fifth Me 163 flight, she was badly injured but insisted on writing her report before falling unconscious and spending five months in hospital. Eventually she became Adolf Hitler's favorite pilot. Reitsch was one of only two women awarded the Iron Cross First Class during World War II, and the only woman awarded the Luftwaffe Combined Pilot and Observer Badge with Diamonds. She survived many accidents and was badly injured several times. In the last days of the war Reitsch was asked to fly her companion, Colonel-General Robert Ritter von Greim, into Berlin to meet with Hitler. The city was already surrounded by Red Army troops who had made significant progress into the downtown area when they arrived on the 27th April, landing on a city street, and traveled to the Führerbunker. The aircraft she used was the justly famous Fieseler Storch already well known for the exploit that rescued Mussolini, only adding to the legend of both Reitsch and that aircraft. She is said to have overheard Hitler laying out plans for Nazi commanders to join together in mass suicide when it was obvious that the war was over. She also hoped to fly out propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels' six children, who had been staying in the bunker since April 22 with their parents, but neither Joseph nor Magda Goebbels would allow it. She escaped Berlin on 29th April by flying out through heavy Russian anti-aircraft fire. She was a devoted and idealistic Nazi, who adored Adolf Hitler and refused to believe the reports of concentration camps and torture. Not until much later would she say that she had been "disgusted" by what she witnessed in the Third Reich. She was held for 18 months by the American military after the war, she was interrogated and subsequently released. After the war German citizens were forbidden from flying, except, after a few years, in gliders. In 1952 Reitsch won third place in the world gliding championship in Spain (and was the only woman who competed). She continued to break records including the women's altitude record (6848 meters) and became German champion in 1955.

179. CODENAME VALKYRIE: GENERAL FRIEDRICH OLBRICHT AND THE PLOT AGAINST HITLER
Helena Schrader, C

On 20 July 1944 the last assassination attempt against Hitler failed. Leading conspirators behind the attempted coup and thousands of supporters and sympathisers were arrested and executed. First to fall to the vicious Nazi retribution was General Friedrich Olbricht, who had nurtured the plans over three years - codenamed Valkyrie. Olbricht was less glamorous than Stauffenberg, who laid the bomb in Hitler's bunker, but contributed far more to the overall resistance against Hitler. Helena Schrader traces Olbricht's transformation into an active conspirator dedicated to removing Hitler from power, showing how his plans might have succeeded had Stauffenberg not failed. 30 b&w illustrations

181. HITLER'S CHANCELLERY A PALACE TO LAST A THOUSAND YEARS
Ronald Pawly, C,O-

This book tells the story of the most iconic building of the Third Reich. Hitler's New State Chancellery was designed by Albert Speer specifically to embody the power and arrogance of the new Nazi regime. The dimensions and decoration of its state apartments were devised to instil awe in the visitor, and it was intended to be the first working model for Germania - a whole new capital city for the Thousand-Year Reich. But this book is much more than a catalogue of concrete, glass and marble. It tells the extraordinary story of the Nazi state, for which the Chancellery provided the ceremonial headquarters and the stage for some of its most dramatic moments. Albert Speer deliberately designed Hitler's palace to have 'ruin appeal', foreseeing future centuries when it remains would make as great an impression on the visitor to Germania as the Coliseum in Rome. Instead, it was completely destroyed after barely ten years that today the tourist can locate its very site only with difficulty. Ronald Pawly's book carries the reader on a time-machine trip into a grim past, within living memory, but utterly erased from the physical record. 200 colour and b&w photographs,

182. HE WAS MY CHIEF: THE MEMOIRS OF ADOLF HITLER'S SECRETARY CHRISTA SCHROEDER
Christa Schroeder, C

As secretary to the Führer throughout the time of the Third Reich, Christa Schroeder was perfectly placed to observe the actions and behavior of Hitler, along with the most important figures surrounding him. Schroeder’s memoir does not fail to deliver fascinating insights: she notes his bourgeois manners, his vehement abstemiousness and his mood swings. Indeed, she was ostracized by Hitler for a number of months after she made the mistake of publicly contradicting him once too often. In addition to her portrayal of Hitler, there are illuminating anecdotes about Hitler’s closest colleagues. She recalls, for instance, that the relationship between Martin Bormann and his brother Albert (who was on Hitler’s personal staff) was so bad that the two would only communicate with one another via their respective adjutants – even if they were in the same room. There is also light shed on the peculiar personal life and insanity of Reichsminister Walther Darré. Schroeder claims to have known nothing of the horrors of the Nazi regime. There is nothing of the sense of perspective or the mea culpa that one finds in the memoirs of Hitler’s other secretary, Traudl Junge – who concluded ‘we should have known’. Rather the tone that pervades Schroeder’s memoir is one of bitterness. This is, without any doubt, one of the most important primary sources from the pre-war and wartime period. Christa Schroeder was Hitler’s personal secretary for twelve years in total. She worked as his secretary until his suicide in April 1945, living at the Wolfsschanze near Rastenburg. Her memoir Er War Mein Chef was first published in 1985, a year after her death in Munich, aged 76. 8 pages b/w photos,

183. FILM POSTERS OF THE THIRD REICH
William Gillespie and Joel Nelson, S,O,

Films produced by Nazi Germany remain one of the great taboos of modern times. As one prominent film historian put it, these films are the unreconciled legacies of the Third Reich. Of the 1,094 German feature films produced between 1933-1945 fewer than ten percent are today available on DVD or VHS commercially- mostly innocuous comedies, musicals, and entertainment films produced to provide escapism to the German population during the six years of war. Students of film history today cannot access Third Reich films and these motion pictures remain an enigma to all but the most persistent collectors and students. Even rarer than the films themselves are the original posters which heralded the films in cinemas across Greater Germany before and during World War Two. Most posters were simply discarded after the films run or later destroyed in the firestorms caused by Allied bombings or Red Army occupation. If the posters survived the war, they were often burned as propaganda, perhaps as fuel, or left to rot. Today, those remaining copies are hidden away in national archives, as inaccessible as the films they represent -- an uncomfortable remnant of a terrible era. This book is the first-ever to reproduce in full color over 50 posters which are the rarest of the rare - those designed to promote the most infamous and notorious propaganda films produced by Dr Goebbels. Many of these posters have never been reproduced in color after 1945 until now, and many are the only examples known to exist. They are drawn from the private collections of the two authors after forty years of collecting. The book also provides first-time English translations of articles about film posters, design, censorship and promotion from the official Reich Film Chamber s own publication, Der Deutsche Film (1936-1943) and allows the reader to understand how film was promoted throughout the Third Reich in a cinema empire across occupied Europe that by 1943 eclipsed that of Hollywood. This book is the standard reference work on Third Reich film posters. Limited edition. Limpbound binding. Beautiful high quality book destined to be a collectors item!

184. WITH HITLER TO THE END: THE MEMOIRS OF ADOLF HITLER'S VALET HEINZ LINGE
Heinz Linge, C

Heinz Linge worked with Adolf Hitler for a ten-year period from 1935 until the Fuhrer's death in the Berlin bunker in May 1945. He was one of the last to leave the bunker and was responsible for guarding the door while Hitler killed himself. During his years of service, Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler's household and was constantly by his side. He claims that only Eva Braun stood closer to Hitler over these years. Here, Linge recounts the daily routine in Hitler's household: his eating habits, his foibles, his preferences, his sense of humor, and his private life with Eva Braun. In fact, Linge believed Hitler's closest companion was his dog Blondi. After the war Linge said in an interview, "It was easier for him to sign a death warrant for an officer on the front than to swallow bad news about the health of his dog." Linge also charts the changes in Hitler's character during their time together and his fading health during the last years of the war. During his last days, Hitler's right eye began to hurt intensely and Linge was responsible for administering cocaine drops to kill the pain. In a number of instances—such as with the Stauffenberg bomb plot of July 1944—Linge gives an excellent eyewitness account of events. He also gives thumbnail profiles of the prominent members of Hitler's "court": Hess, Speer, Bormann and Ribbentrop amongst them. Though Linge held an SS rank, he claims not to have been a Nazi Party member. His profile of one of history's worst demons is not blindly uncritical, but it is nonetheless affectionate. The Hitler that emerges is a multifaceted individual: unpredictable and demanding, but not of an otherwise unpleasant nature. 12 photos,

186. THE SCIENCE OF THE SWASTIKA
Bernard Mees, C,

The first theoretically informed study of the relationship between an academic discipline and what the Nazis termed their Weltanschauung.

The first study of Sinnbildforschung, German ideograph or swastika studies, though more broadly it tells the tale of the development of German antiquarian studies (ancient Germanic history, archaeology, anthropology, folklore, historical linguistics and philology) under the influence of radical right wing politics, and the contemporary construction of ‘Germanicness’ and its role in Nazi thought. The swastika and similar symbols were employed by the ancestors of the modern day Germans. As these had also become emblematic symbols of the forces of German reaction, Sinnbildforschung became intrinsically connected with the National Socialist regime after 1933 and disappeared along with the Third Reich in 1945. With the Nazi seizure of power, ideographic studies became directly supported by the state. In 1935 an organization was founded within the SS to further its study, the SS-Ahnenerbe. Most infamous as the organ through which medical experiments were arranged to be performed on the inmates of concentration camps, the Ahnenerbe was founded as a historical research institution before it expanded its horizons to the physical sciences. 16 pages illustrations

187. I WAS HITLER'S CHAUFFEUR: THE MEMOIRS OF ERICH KEMPKA
Erich Kempka,C

Erich Kempka served as Hitler’s personal driver from 1934 through to the Führer’s dramatic suicide in 1945. His candid memoirs offer a unique eyewitness account of events leading up to and during the war, culminating in those dark final days in the Führer's headquarters, deep under the shattered city of Berlin. He begins by describing his duties as a member of Hitler’s personal staff in the years preceding the war, driving the Führer throughout Germany and abroad, and accompanying him to rallies. The crux of his memoirs however covers his life with Hitler in the Berlin Führerbunker. During this time he was responsible for a transport fleet of cars, and often drove the likes of Speer or Kesselring on inspection tours to the hot spots on the front; and in March 1945, he accompanied the Führer to his final front-inspection tour. Kempka was also present when news came through of Göring and Himmler’s efforts to seize power and negotiate a truce with the Western Allies. Crucially, Kempka also witnessed Hitler’s marriage to Eva Braun, and his last dinner and personal farewell to all those present, before he and his wife committed suicide. Hitler’s final order to Kempka was that he have ready enough petrol to burn him and his wife. Under constant Soviet artillery fire, Kempke, Linge and others poured petrol over the bodies and burnt them. The account concludes with Kempka’s hazardous escape out of a burning Berlin more than 800 km through enemy-occupied Germany, home to find his wife at BE. There he was arrested by American C.fI.C. personnel and interrogated before being sent to serve as a witness at Nuremburg. 8 pages of photos,

189. HELLSTORM: THE DEATH OF NAZI GERMANY, 1944-1947
Tom Goodrich, C,

It was the most deadly and destructive war in human history. Millions were killed, billions in property was destroyed, ancient cultures were reduced to rubble--World War II was truly man's greatest cataclysm. Thousands of books, movies and documentary films have been devoted to the war. There has never been such a terrible retelling of the story, however, as one will find in Hellstorm.

In a chilling "you-are-there" style, the author places the reader at the scene, in the moment. Throughout this book readers will see what Allied airman saw as they rained down death on German cities; or the reader will experience what those below experienced as they sat trembling in their bomb shelters awaiting that very same death from above. The reader will view up close the horrors of the Eastern Front during the last months of fighting and through the mud, blood and madness of combat they may come to understand how the same German soldiers, who only moments before had destroyed an enemy tank, could now risk their own lives to rescue the trapped Soviet crew inside. Readers will witness for themselves the fate of German women as the rampaging Red Army raped and murdered its way across Europe--all females, from "eight to eighty" feared the dreaded words, "Frau Komm." The worst nautical disasters in history which claimed thousands of lives, the greatest mass migration known to man in which millions perished, the fate of those wretched victims in post-war death camps and torture chambers, these and many other dark secrets of World War II now come to light in Hellstorm.

190. THE HITLER I KNEW: MEMOIRS OF THE THIRD REICH'S PRESS CHIEF
Otto Dietrich, C

When Otto Dietrich was invited in 1933 to become Adolf Hitler's press chief, he accepted with the simple uncritical conviction that Adolf Hitler was a great man, dedicated to promoting peace and welfare for the German people. At the end of the war, imprisoned and disillusioned, Otto Dietrich sat down to write what he had seen and heard in twelve years of the closest association with Hitler, requesting that it be published after his death. Dietrich's role placed him in a privileged position. He was hired by Hitler in 1933, was his confidant until 1945, and he worked—and clashed—with Joseph Goebbels. His direct, personal experience of life at the heat of the Reich makes for compelling reading.

191. HITLER'S STORMTROOPERS AND THE ATTACK ON THE GERMAN REPUBLIC, 1919 - 1933
Otis Mitchell, C,O-

This book seeks to ll a significant gap in the literature by concentrating particularly on the Nazi Party and its growth during the years of the Weimar Republic, examining the paramilitary presence in Germany and Bavaria after World War I. Most of the book describes the development of the Nazi Storm Detachment (Sturmabteilung, or SA) before and after the failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. By the time Hitler came to power in January 1933, there were perhaps as many as 400,000 of these brown-shirted men, often self-styled revolutionaries, creating violence on a daily basis and destroying the underpinnings of the Weimar Republic. The book features several photographs captured from the Nazi Party’s Central Publishing Facility in Munich and passed to the author in the late 1950s.

192. UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER: A MEMOIR OF THE LAST DAYS OF THE THIRD REICH AND THE DONITZ ADMINISTRATION
Walter Ludde-Neurath, C

The administration of Karl Dönitz, head of state and supreme commander of Germany's armed forces following Hitler's suicide, marks a key period in World War II. Author Walter Lüdde-Neurath served at Dönitz's side through the final, chaotic weeks of fighting, the infighting among the Nazi elite as they tried to save themselves, and the negotiations for surrender. With this memoir Lüdde-Neurath provides an insider's view of what happened as the Third Reich collapsed around them.
