91. MUSSOLINI AS DIPLOMAT
Richard Lamb, C,

very controversial study by a respected historian. Mussolini at one time had a deep distrust of Hitler, and had feelings of friendship towards England and France, and in England many of their leaders including Churchill and Chamberlain held Mussolini in high esteem. Lamb reveals the secret records of the international conference in 1935 to present a united front with England and France against German rearmament. But a meeting between Mussolini and Anthony Eden went so badly that Eden developed a personal dislike for Mussolini that almost amounted to vendetta. It is the author's contention, based on British and Italian documents finally released after more than half a century, that it was Eden that drove Mussolini into Hitler's arms, and from then on the British policy of appeasing Hitler and opposing Mussolini was disastrous.

"war of annihilation."" "War of the Century focuses on key events and
policies such as Hitler's decision to invade the Soviet Union, the legendary
and horrific siege of Stalingrad, the Germans' barbaric treatment of Soviet
civilians and Red Army prisoners of war, and Stalin's paranoid revenge
against real and perceived enemies. With this new evidence, Rees explores the

104. ECHOES OF WAR: THE STORY OF H2S RADAR
Sir Bernard Lovell,C,

In 1941, the failure of Bomber Command to locate its target over the cloudy skies of Europe prompted the formations of a new group to develop a blind bombing system. Led by the author, this group developed the H2S radar to identify towns and other targets at night or during heavy cloud cover. H2S units installed in Coastal Command aircraft operating over the Bay of Biscay had a dramatic tactical effect on the air war against the U-boats. This book then provides a crucial insight into the scientific culture of wartime Britain and details the history of the personal sacrifices, setbacks and eventual triumphs of those people fighting the Great Fight. In this fascination chronicle of the H2S radar project, Lovell has recreated the feel and mood of the wartime years, as well the technical aspects of the work, illustrated with photos and line drawings.

121. HAMMER AND RIFLE: THE MILITARIZATION OF THE SOVIET UNION, 1926-1933,
David Stone, C,

from 1926 to 1933 a vast transformation swept through the
Soviet Union, a massive militarization of society that was as powerful and
far-reaching as the Revolution itself. In this book the author chronicles
this transformation and shows why it is so central to our understanding of
Stalin's emergence and consolidation of power. This is the history book club version.

304 pp.
WAS $40.00, SPECIAL - $6.98

122. INSIDE HITLER'S HIGH COMMAND,
Geoffrey Megargee, C,

This is the history bookclub edition, it is exactly the same as the publisher's edition but not bound in publisher's cloth, it hasn't been redueced in size. Challenging previous accounts, the author shatters the myth that German generals would have prevailed in WWII if only Hitler had not meddled in their affairs, and while
Hitler was the central figure in many military decisions, his generals were
equal partners in Germany's catastrophic defeat. Megargee exposes the
structure, processes, and personalities that governed the Third Reich's
military decision making and shows how Germany's presumed battlefield
superiority was undermined by poor strategic and operational planning at the
highest levels. A fascinating chapter, "a week in the life" puts the high
command under a magnifying glass to reveal the inner workings during the
fierce fighting on the Russian Front in Decemer 1941. In the authors final
assessment, the generals' strategic ideas were no better than Hitler's and
often worse. This book will make for a very compelling read for it is often a
radical departure from conventional thought,

136. ARMS FOR SPAIN: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR
Gerald Howson, C,

This book combines a unique combination of exhaustive research, forensic skills, and technical expertise on armaments to show how the arms embargo played a large part in the Republic's defeat than is usually acknowledged. This embargo, created by European leaders, gave Franco's rebels an enormous advantage against the Republic. While Franco was supplied with weapons from Hitler and Mussolini, the Republic was forced to buy illegal arms from foreign officials who extorted huge bribes for arms they never delivered. Russia, long believed to be the Republic's strongest supporter, was one of the worst offenders. The book features excellent appendices on the weapons used in the war and the foreign shipments of weapons, providing the description and numbers delivered of each.

commanders,

140. THE RAKKASANS: THE COMBAT HISTORY OF THE 187TH AIRBORNE INFANTRY
E.E. Flanagan, C,

The Rakkasans: The Combat History Of The 187th Airborne Infantry is the complete account of one of the most remarkable regiments in the history of the U. S. Army. The Rakkasans (literally "umbrella men" in Japanese from the shape of the parachute canopy), have fought in every major American military conflict from World War II to the Persian Gulf. It had its baptism of fire when it landed in the Philippines on Leyte island where the regiment engaged in fierce combat against seasoned Japanese soldiers -- and performed superbly. The 187th went on to fight in two other major campaigns in the Pacific and were chosen by General MacArthur as part of the first wave of troops sent to occupy Japan. During the Korean War, the 187th was the only airborne unit deployed, and operated as an independent regimental combat team, complete with its own direct support artillery. In Vietnam, the Rakkasans were represented in the 101st Airborne Division by only one battalion. But that single battalion made history by fighting in 21 campaigns and defeating the well-trained and well-supplied NVA troops at the ferocious battle for Dong Ap Bia Mountain (better known as Hamburger Hill). In Desert Storm, the Rakkasans made the longest and largest helicopter assault in military history when it air assaulted from Saudi Arabia more than 150 miles to hostile territory along the Euphrates River. The Rakkasans is important military history, well researched and articulated for both the student of military history and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in military history.

147. THE ROAD TO ARNHEM: A SCREAMING EAGLE IN HOLLAND
Donald Burgett, C,

Burgett's memoir fighting with the 101st Airborne at Market Garden. It proved to be impossible as it was audacious. Yet the paratroopers accomplished their mission, capturing and holding all of their assigned objectives. It was at a high cost as the Screaming Eagles battled the Germans along what quickly became known as Hell's Highway for seventy-two days. Finally in late November, the 101st was pulled out of the line. Writing with clarity and simplicity, Burgett's account of combat is extraordinary.

149.BLOODY RIDGE: THE BATTLE THAT SAVED GUALALCANAL
Michael Smith, C

September 1942: American forces landed on the island of Guadalcanal, engaging the entrenched Japanese in what would be remembered as some of the worst fighting of World War II. The key to victory lay in controlling the ridge overlooking Henderson Field, a vital airfield and the prize of the Guadalcanal campaign. This was the site of a savage, three-day clash that would test the mettle of both sides. Launching a series of vicious attacks on successive nights, a vastly superior force of battle-hardened Japanese somehow lost to a mongrel battalion of Col. "Red Mike" Edson's malnourished, sickly Marines in what became known as the Battle of Bloody Ridge. The surprising victory marked the first significant Japanese defeat in the war, saved the airfield, and gave the small, under-supplied American force time to receive supplies and reinforcements. This is the true story of that harrowing battle, when the fate of the war in the Pacific would rest with those who were tough enough to take Bloody Ridge.

150. CORREGIDOR: THE ROCK FORCE ASAULT
General E.M. Flanagan, S,

The book begins with the story of the conquest of the Philippines by American Forces in 1898 during the Spanish American War. It then continues with the military fortifications of the island during the American Administration. The Japanese conquest of the Philippines culminating in the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942 set the stage for the American reconquest. Flanagan does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the assault forces, the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team and the 3rd Battalion Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division. With the invasion of the Philippines proceeding successfully the hour for the redemption of American honor at Corregidor arrived. The small available drop zones on the island made the airborne assault most unlikely and, therefore, a total surprise to the Japanese defenders. Flanagan takes the reader through the challenges met by the assault force, the means of attack by air, sea and land, the Japanese resistance and the descriptions of the ambient conditions which add to the hellish atmosphere of war.

181. HORROR IN THE EAST: JAPAN AND THE ATROCITIES OF WWII
Laurence Rees, C,

This chronologically organized book does a nice job of explaining the cultural attitudes and historical events that lay behind Japanese atrocities during World War II. Of six chapters here, the first is devoted to political and historical background on Japan and its war with China during the 1930s, including the rape of Nanking in 1937. The second, "Dealing with the West," covers Japan's aspirations for European-held East Asian colonies (such as Indochina) that led to a U.S.-led oil embargo-and Pearl Harbor. Chapter three centers on the appalling treatment of 100,000 Allied prisoners captured after the quick fall of Singapore in 1942, while "Lurching towards Defeat" offers a view of the Pacific war 1942-1944, including the motivations of Japanese kamikaze pilots (which included "the spiritual faith that after death... their souls would dwell in the emperor's own shrine") and the rationalizations behind other Japanese atrocities. This is certainly the most valuable part of the book.

182. BATTLE OF ALAMEIN: TURNING POINT, WWII
John Bierman, C,

In this superb history, two seasoned journalists unfold the decisive campaigns of the desert war that began with the Italian invasion of Egypt in September 1940 and ended with the mass surrender of Axis forces in Tunis in May 1943. Writing with great verve and style, John Bierman and Colin Smith create a stunning panorama peopled by some of the most glamorous, dangerous and mysterious figures in the war. At the center of this sweeping narrative stand two heroes, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the notorious "Desert Fox," and the British Lieutenant General Bernard "Monty" Montgomery, whose showdown at the little Egyptian railway stop of El Alamein is one of the great moments in military history. Bierman and Smith have interviewed scores of survivors and tracked down hitherto overlooked primary sources to craft a historic narrative that reads like a novel.

Stanley Hirshson, C,

Hirshson's exhaustively researched and well-written biography presents a balanced view of Patton's life from every angle, from his performance in the 1912 Olympics to his belief in reincarnation. Of course, most of the book chronicles his career in WWII, and the material is excellent. He examines the strategies and tactics of the American war in Europe, and includes fascinating analyses of the often problematic relationships between Patton and Allied generals. Offering an essentially sympathetic view of the general, the book still describes all of Patton's faults though carefully. The best biography of Patton to date, this will most likely become the definitive work on his life.

184. TO DESTROY A CITY: STRATEGIC BOMBING AND ITS HUMAN CONSEQUENCES IN WWII
Herman Knell, C,

Herman Knell was nineteen and living in Würtzburg in March of 1945 when hundreds of Allied planes arrived overhead, unleashing a torrent of bombs on the city. Würtzburg's tightly packed medieval housing exploded in a firestorm, killing six thousand people in one night and destroying 92 percent of the city's structures. Despite the fact that Würtzburg had no strategic value, the city emerged from World War II second only to Dresden in material destruction inflicted from the air. The experience led Knell to years of research on the history, development, and effects of the strategy of area bombing. To Destroy a City is the result of the author's long and unrelenting investigation.

185. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC: HITLER'S GRAY WOLVES OF THE SEA AND THE ALLIES' DESPERATE STRUGGLE TO DEFEAT THEM
Andrew Williams, C,

This hard-fought conflict gets an engrossing retelling in this companion to the History Channel series. Williams, producer of War Crime: Five Days in Hell for the BBC, covers every aspect of the cat-and-mouse game in which U-boats stalked merchant convoys across the ocean and were in turn hunted by Allied planes and destroyers. It's a harrowing tale, full of torpedo attacks, depth-chargings and drownings in the icy North Atlantic, and Williams draws on many first-hand accounts, both German and Allied, to bring it to life. He also pulls back to examine the strategic dimensions of the battle, exploring the development of German wolf-pack tactics, the initially bumbling Allied efforts to organize convoys and escorts, and the increasingly sophisticated anti-submarine warfare techniques that eventually drove the wolf packs from the North Atlantic. Williams is especially good at explaining the vital development of sonar, radar, detection and decryption technologies that enabled Allied escorts to locate, evade and destroy the stealthy U-boats with ever greater success.

186. ZHUKOV,
Otto Chaney, C,

This is the updated edition of the best biography of Zhukov ever published. It is a must for anyone that has an interest in the Marshal's career and/or an interest in the former USSR military machine and how it operated. After years of false and censored information on Zhukov and the Soviet military, "Zhukov" brings to light the the personalities (and incompetence) of such Soviet individuals as Stalin, Khruschev, and Breznev. The book helps show how these 'leaders' (through their low level of intelligence and maturity) helped stunt the growth of the USSR as a nation. Most importantly, the book brings to light the actual accomplishments of Marshal Zhukov (ie. Moscow, Stalingrad, Berlin, etc.) and how much of a role he had in the planning of these operations. From these accomplishments of the Marshal, one can see how 'cults of personalities' were able to appear in such magnitude in the former USSR. The book is a fast reader and highly enjoyable.

190. SHADOW ENEMIES: HITLER'S SECRET TERRORIST PLAT AGAINST THE UNITED STATES
Alex Abella, C,

Here for the first time is the incredible true story of one of Hitler's most diabolical plans: to wreak havoc and terror in America's cities through the hands of carefully trained German agents whose goal was to sabotage manufacturing plants, cut off New York City's water supply, and bomb train stations and Jewish-owned department stores. Shadow Enemies follows the incredible facts of this episode, from the recruitment and training of the agents to their landing on the shores of New York and Florida and their successful infiltration into American society, and from there to the desperate attempts of the FBI to apprehend them before they could put their plans into effect. With exclusive access to previously classified material, the authors of Shadow Enemies present a unique account that not only follows the unfolding of the plot from the outside but also affords a fascinating glimpse of the interior motivations and fears of a key member of the Nazi cell. Equally fascinating is the second part of the story. Fearful that a civilian jury might be led to find the defendants innocent, President Roosevelt ordered that, since the agents had been captured in the act of espionage during wartime, they had no civil rights and could thus be tried by a hitherto unknown military tribunal. The resulting trial led to the execution of six of the eight conspirators only two months after their arrest.

192. THE FORGOTTEN FEW: THE POLISH AIRFORCE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Adam Zamoyski, C,

Fleeing to Britain after the Germans captured their homeland, the pilots of the Polish Air Force played an important role in the Battle of Britain and the air war in the European theater. Flying RAF planes, they shot down 745 enemy aircraft, with another 175 unconfirmed, and 190 flying bombs targeted at London. The British government was at first reluctant to utilize these military refugees, Zamoyski notes in his recap of familiar history, until heavy RAF losses in the defense of France and the evacuation at Dunkirk left Fighter Command no choice. Zamoyski (The Polish Way) chronicles the pilots' exploits in the skies over Europe and their warm relationship on the ground with the British people-especially the women-until the betrayal of their homeland by the Allies at the 1945 Yalta Conference. The story concludes sadly with an account of the development of anti-Polish feelings in Britain at war's end. Photos.

195. THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE THIRD REICH, 1933-1945
Pierre Aycoberry

Author combines a mastery of German history with original research to produce this uniquely balanced account of all aspects of German life under Hitler. Pierre Ayçoberry uncovers the struggles of individuals and social and professional groups who stood up to the pressure of the Nazi Party, often paying a high price, and the attempts of others—mainly upper and middle class professionals—to salvage or improve their positions by casting their lot with the Führer. He also shows the devastation wrought on the once-vibrant German labor movement, leaving workers to choose between hopeless defiance or complicity and nationalism. In this complex answer to the easy judgments passed by many, Ayçoberry paints a multilayered portrait of a society at once victim and accomplice to one of the greatest crimes of all time. 197. AT HITLER'S SIDE: THE MEMOIRS OF HITLER'S LUFTWAFFE ADJUTANT 1937-1945
Nicolaus von Below, C,

Nicolaus von Below was a 29-year-old pilot when Hermann Goering selected him for the position of Hitler's Luftwaffe adjutant, and was the last of Hitler's close military entourage to leave the Berlin bunker alive. Written in 1980, this is Von Below's carefully researched account of the German campaigns of World War II, interspersed with memories of the Führer and insight into how Hitler planned the invasions of Poland and Russia, what he thought of Britain and America, why he placed his faith in the V-1 and V-2 rockets, and much more. Von Below also records the effect on Hitler and his staff following the assassination attempt in July 1944. A record of the war and the Third Reich, the book is on another level an unintended mirror of its author, revealing the compartmentalization of the Nazi mind—even after 35 years, Von Below maintained a deep respect for Hitler's military strategies, blaming his failures on his staff. And though he worked with Hitler on a daily basis, Von Below professes complete ignorance of the concentration camps and the genocide of the Jews.

200. GERMAN SECRET WEAPONS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: THE MISSILES, ROCKETS, WEAPONS AND NEW TECHNOLOGY OF THE THIRD REICH
Ian Hogg, S,

The phrase "German secret weapons" immediately conjures up images of the V-1 and V-2 missiles that bombarded London in 1944. But there were also V-3 and V-4s, not to mention the Schmetterling, the Rochling shell, the Kurt bomb, and the Hs293 missile. These, and many other devices, were all part of the German secret armory but are relatively unknown, except to a handful of specialists. The sheer magnitude of the secret weapon projects of the Third Reich is revealed in this illustrated study, and captures both the reality behind the weapons actually produced and the intentions behind projects still in their infancy when the war ended. Comparisons with Allied projects are also drawn.

207. SOCIAL POLICY IN THE THIRD REICH: THE WORKING CLASS AND NATIONAL COMMUNITY
Tim Mason, C,S,

This book analyses the attitudes and policies of the German leadership towards the German working class. It argues the the regime did not securely integrate the working class and was thus very uncertain of itself when it came to imposing mass economic sacrifices in the interests of forced rearmament. With a growing labor shortage in the late 1930's, industrial conflict re-emerged: these two factors slowed down military preparations for war and may well, it is argued, have influenced Hitler's foreign policy in 1938/39. While others might have spent the ensuing years paying fearful obeisance to this unpredictable master, Kersten discovered that he had both the means and the courage to manipulate the surprisingly naïve Himmler. 219. THE FIRST HEROES: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE DOOLITTLE RAID - AMERICA'S FIRST WWII VICTORY
Craig Nelson, C,

The Doolittle Raiders, as they became known, were a squadron of eighty scarcely trained young men led by the famous daredevil aviator Jimmy Doolittle. Their mission-the daring World War II bombing raid of Tokyo and other cities in April 1942-was successful until Japanese spies forced most of the squadron to crash-land in enemy-occupied China, where pilots were ferried underground across the country to safety. One plane landed in the Soviet port of Vladivostok, where the crew was eventually smuggled out of the country through Persia. Others were captured by the Japanese, confined to years of imprisonment and torture. The fact that 90 percent of the men involved came home alive was little short of a miracle. Extensively researched, including interviews with twenty of the twenty-seven remaining survivors, The First Heroes vividly recreates America's first great victory of World War II. Craig Nelson follows the Doolittle Raiders from their secret training on a Florida airfield to their tense days in transit across the Pacific to the bombing itself and finally to their courageous accounts of survival against astonishing odds.

History’s overriding view of the 1942 Dieppe raid is that of a catastrophe, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No. 4 Commando’s successful mission to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No. 4 Commando’s training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, and its leadership was superb. Quite apart from this first use of Commandos, the raid was also the first instance in which U.S. troops fired shots at their European enemy. Drawing on official records as well as interviews with surviving members of the No. 4 Commando, historian William Fowler has pieced together a stirring account of one of the seminal raids of the Second World War.

224. THE POLAR BEARS MONTY'S LEFT FLANK: FROM NORMANDY TO THE RELIEF OF HOLLAND WITH THE 49TH DIVISION
Patrick Delaforce, C,

Excellent WWII unit history of a British Division. The book focuses on the period of Normandy to the end of the war. As such the brief details of the campaign in Norway, and service in Iceland should be viewed as bonuses. The good points of the book include the attention to the overall picture. This is not about glory, but men at the "sharp end" of war. As such, there are failures of high ranking officers who are sent home, of soldiers forced at gunpoint back to the front by their officers, of hero's, and normal people. The constant drain of casualties over 11 months of combat and the effect on the men. The importance of little things, like baths, and hot food and the joy of liberated people are all here. The author draws on contributions from the soldiers who fought with the Polar Bears, privates, NCO's and officers alike. The book contains numerous maps, and these are of reasonable quality.

225. GRAND DELUSION: STALIN AND THE GERMAN INVASION OF RUSSIA,
Gabriel Gorodetsky, S,

draws on vital new archival material to unravel the mystery of
Hitler's invasion of Russia and Stalin's enigmatic behavior on the eve of the
attack. Gorodetsky challenges the popular view that Stalin was about to
invade Germany when Hitler attacked, and that Stalin was eagerly anticipating
a peace conference where various accords imposed on Russia would be revised.
The delusion of being able to dictate a new European order blinded him to the
lurking German danger, and his erroneous diagnosis of the political scene -
colored by his perennial suspicion of Great Britain - led him to miscontrue
the evidence of his own and Britain's intelligence services. The author
highlights the sequence of military blunders that resulted from Stalin's
determination to appease Germany - blunders that provide the key to
understanding the calamity that befell Russia on June 1941,

Bernard Edwards, C,

the improbable story of two different cruisers, the much heralded
Admiral Hipper and the Pinguin, a converted merchantman, armed only with 5.9
inch guns and operated by a predominately reservist crew. Contrary to all
expectations, the amateur warship Pinguin was highly successful and went out
in a blaze of glory, while the Admiral Hipper was hard-pressed to make its
mark in the war. The author delves into the striking distinction between the
conduct of the Pinguin's captain, who made a strong effort to minimize Allied
casualties, and the callous attidtude of the Admiral Hipper's captain,

231. ROAD TO RUSSIA: ARCTIC CONVOYS 1942
Bernard Edwards, C,

When the Soviet Union joined the Allies in 1942, one of the most perilous convoy operations in World War II was launched. Risking icebergs, dense fog, violent storms, and the U-boat menace, overloaded merchantmen and their thin-hulled escorts carried supplies through Arctic waters to prop up the vulnerable Russian war effort. The author draws on numerous archival sources and deftly integrates the human element into this concise historical narrative. He brings to life the bone-chilling cold and the courage of the crewmembers who risked collision only to see their danger-filled voyages often go for naught as military and food supplies were destroyed by enemy attacks in Russian ports. This fascinating saga is sure to be enjoyed by everyone with an interest in the strategy and heroics of the Battle of the Atlantic.

234. ADVANCE FORCE PEARL HARBOR
Burl Burlingame, S,O-

The Japanese submarine assault on Pearl Harbor, though not as well-known as the devastating air strike, had a significant impact on the chaos that was 7 December 1941. Drawn from American and Japanese sources, this page-turner of a book describes both the single-minded bravery of the submariners who carried out the attack and the valorous men in the destroyers who battled against them. It is the first comprehensive examination of the role played by the Imperial Navy’s submarine force, a story that has been overlooked because the mission was not successful. Infused with vivid firsthand accounts by participants, the narrative crackles with intrigue and suspense. The author covers every aspect of the campaign from submarine development, strategy, and espionage, to the Japanese military psyche and prisoners of war. One of the many interesting sidebars includes computer-enhanced images of a classic battle photo that reveals the previously unnoticed presence of midget submarines just off Battleship Row. Profiles of crewmembers lend a human dimension to the unique cadre of the Japanese submariner. Generously illustrated with more than 300 photographs and diagrams, this thoroughly researched volume restores the underwater attack at Pearl Harbor to its proper place in history and provides a riveting chronicle of the U.S. Navy’s day of infamy. 305 photos.

JoAnna McDonald, S,

In one of the remarkable stories of D-Day, the task of liberating a small but significant German stronghold-Pointe du Hoc-fell to 225 brave souls from the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Led by Lt. Col. James Rudder, the men scaled the 100 foot cliff and fought their way into history. Volunteers for "the most dangerous mission of that day", they were asked to overcome natural barriers, destroy six huge 155mm guns, cut German communications, set up roadblocks, and hinder enemy reinforcements from reaching the beach areas. The suppression of the guns would literally make a life or death difference to the U.S. troops landing on Omaha and Utah Beaches. 243. THE FALL OF FRANCE: THE NAZI INVASION OF FRANCE 1940
Julian Jackson, C,

This book charts the breathtakingly rapid events that led to the defeat and surrender of one of the greatest bastions of the Western Allies. Using eyewitness accounts, memoirs, and diaries to bring the story to life, Jackson not only recreates the intense atmosphere of the six weeks in May and June leading up to the establishment of the Vichy regime, but he also unravels the historical evidence to produce a fresh answer to the perennial question--was the fall of France inevitable. Jackson's vivid narrative explores the errors of France's military leaders, her inability to create stronger alliances, the political infighting, the lack of morale, even the decadence of the inter-war years. Perhaps more than anything else, the cause of the defeat was the failure of the French to pinpoint where the main thrust of the German army would come, a failure that led them to put their best soldiers up against a feint, while their worst troops faced the heart of the German war machine. An engaging and authoritative narrative, The Fall of France illuminates six weeks that changed the course of twentieth-century history.

254. AN ARMY AT DAWN: THE WAR IN NORTH AFRICA 1942-1943: VOLUME ONE OF THE LIBERATION TRILOGY
Rick Atkinson, C,

In An Army at Dawn,, a comprehensive look at the 1942-1943 Allied invasion of North Africa, author Rick Atkinson posits that the campaign was, along with the battles of Stalingrad and Midway, where the "Axis ... forever lost the initiative" and the "fable of 3rd Reich invincibility was dissolved." Additionally, it forestalled a premature and potentially disastrous cross-channel invasion of France and served as a grueling "testing ground" for an as-yet inexperienced American army. Lastly, by relegating Great Britain to what Atkinson calls the status of "junior partner" in the war effort, North Africa marked the beginning of American geopolitical hegemony. Although his prose is occasionally overwrought, Atkinson's account is a superior one, an agile, well-informed mix of informed strategic overview and intimate battlefield-and-barracks anecdotes. (Tobacco-starved soldiers took to smoking cigarettes made of toilet paper and eucalyptus leaves.) Especially interesting are Atkinson's straightforward accounts of the many "feuds, tiffs and spats" among British and American commanders, politicians, and strategists and his honest assessments of their--and their soldiers'--performance and behavior, for better and for worse. This is an engrossing, extremely accessible account of a grim and too-often overlooked military campaign.

257. VOLKSWAGEN MILITARY VEHICLES OF THE THIRD REICH
Blaine Taylor, C,O,

Profusely illustrated and rare photographic history of the Volkswagen car and its military use in Hitler's Third Reich. Originally intended as a symbol of prewar prosperity, the Volkswagen, or "people's car," eventually became a key element in the Nazi war machine. With the outbreak of World War II, the production of the Volkswagen car was adapted for military use, and the Kubelwagen, German "jeep," was designed and manufactured throughout Germany. A special amphibious version, the "Schwimmwagen," was later developed and spearheaded many major German offensives. Appearing in several variants, Volkswagen vehicles became the mainstay of German command and motorized units. This detailed history of the Volkswagen in the 1930s and 1940s covers all varieties of makes and models of the Volkswagen in use during the Third Reich and is richly illustrated with rare photographs of the vehicles themselves, technical drawings, engine designs, and sales brochures of the period.

259. THE FIGHTING FIRST: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE BIG RED ONE ON D-DAY
Flint Whitlock, C

The Fighting First tells the untold story of the 1st Infantry Division's part in the D-Day invasion of France at Normandy. Using a variety of primary sources, official records, interviews, and unpublished memoirs by the veterans themselves, author Flint Whitlock has crafted a riveting, gut-wrenching, personal story of courage under fire. Operation Overlord - the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944--was arguably the most important battle of World War II, and Omaha Beach was the hottest spot in the entire operation. Leading the amphibious assault on the "Easy Red" and"Fox Green" sectors of Omaha Beach was the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division--"The Big Red One"--a tough, swaggering outfit with a fine battle record. The saga of the Big Red One, however, did not end with the storming of the beachhead. The author concludes with an account of the 1st in their fight across France, Belgium, and into Germany itself, playing pivotal roles in the bloody battles for Aachen, the Huertgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge. The Fighting First is an inspiring, graphic, and often heartbreaking story of young American soldiers performing their D-Day missions with spirit, humor, and determination.

261. A PLAGUE UPON HUMANITY: THE SECRET GENOCIDE OF AXIS JAPAN'S GERM WARFARE OPERATION
Daniel Barenblatt, C,

A useful overview of the history of biological warfare provides a historical context for the gruesome experiments on humans that began in northern China in the early 1930s, linked to the military expansion Japan began during the 1930s and fathered by scientist Shiro Ishii, who figures prominently in the book among the 20,000 Japanese professionals involved (some of whom knowingly distributed tainted food). The accounts of experiments on humans and massive germ warfare attacks against civilians-more than 400,000 Chinese died of cholera after two attacks in 1943-include the testimony of Chinese victims and witnesses as well as some Japanese. While most atrocities were committed against Chinese and Koreans, some Westerners, including American prisoners of war, were also victims. The most thoughtful portions of the book explore how such atrocities "...coldly preserve medicine's scientific devices while annihilating all its high ideals." Shameful U.S. government efforts, spearheaded by MacArthur, to protect the Japanese perpetrators from prosecution in exchange for their research, even to the extent of characterizing the only war crimes trial that prosecuted perpetrators as propaganda (it was conducted by the Soviets), are well documented. Although many of the gruesome facts have been published before, Barenblatt brings together the many contexts of how Japan's war machine came to commit medical-biological war crimes on a massive scale, with a final death toll of 580,000.

Hugh Thomas, C,

In 1946, M16's most talented, if treacherous, agent, Kim Philby, was not convinced that the story of Himmler's death made any sense at all. Philby realized that a man of Himmler's organizational genius, a plotter of great intricacy and sophistication who recognized Germany's inevitable defeat as early as 1943, was unlikely to have just blundered into the arms of the Allies. What really happened? Thomas sets out to answer Philby's question and has uncovered a maze of corruption, high finance, political gambles, and international intrigue. This book unearths not just Himmler's grave, but reveals secrets that have long remained buried, and shadowy figures who would rather it stay that way. Illustrated with photos.

264. RUSSIAN HEROES 1941-1945 ,
Albert Axell, C,

This new volume by historian Albert Axell captures in full the valor of the sons and daughters, soldiers and villagers, Cossacks and snipers who battled in Moscow and Stalingrad, in the Caucasus and the Arctic, at the Brest fortress and Kursk Bulge. Their defense of Mother Russia, the battlefront that in World War II dwarfed all
others, turned the tide of the war against Hitler and enabled the western
democratic forces to reduce dramatically the number of their casualties. From
the account of the aging Russian general who suffered drenchings in ice-cold
water rather than collaborate with his Nazi captors to that of the
nineteen-year-old private who flung himself on the gun port of a German
pillbox so that his comrades could advance, these pages not only chronicle
extraordinary selfless acts of heroism but also rectify an astonishing
oversight in innumerable histories of World War II. The stories throughout
are altogether remarkable - like that of Alexei Maresyev, the pilot who
crash-landed his plane, crawled in the snow for two weeks with the two broken
legs he eventually lost, and with a pair of artificial limbs returned to the
air to continue the fight for the country of his blood - and dramatically
illustrate how deeply patriotism and bravery lie in the Russian soul,

308. PANZER OPERATIONS: THE EASTERN FRONT MEMOIR OF GENERAL RAUS, 1941-1945
Erhard Raus, C,

A significant postwar memoir written by one of Germany's best field commanders and a brilliant tank General. Raus entered the Soviet Union in June 1941 as commander of a brigade of the 6th Pazner division. He quickly distinguished himself earning the Iron Cross for piercing the Stalin Line. During the Russian campaign he rose steadily through the ranks and was appointed the Army Group Command in early 1945. After the war Raus wrote a detailed memoir of his service in Russia. Later the U.S. Army divided up and excerpted the portions of the memoir for use a nearly dozen tactical manuals published during the 1950's. Those manuals were heavily edited and omitted much of the author's original material. Now Steven Newton has reassembled, translated, and edited the underlying narrative of Raus's four years of war on the Eastern Front. It is the first time his complete memoirs are made available, and by far the best translation of any of his writings. A must have.

309. FORTRESS EUROPE: EUROPEAN FORTIFICATIONS OF WWII
J.E. Kaufmann, S,O,

The only comprehensive description of all of Europe's World War II forts-from the Atlantic Wall to the Molotov Line-supplemented by scores of remarkable technical drawings. The Maginot Line and the Atlantic Wall are, perhaps, the most famous World War II-era fortification lines in Europe, but in fact, most European countries built fortified defensive lines throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Forts, bunkers, and defensive lines are found throughout the continent, including Central and Eastern Europe. Fortress Europe is the first and only comprehensive treatment of all of Europe's modern fortifications. Country by country, the authors describe in detail all of the fortifications built prior to and during World War II. The fortifications of smaller countries, like Belgium and the Netherlands, which added important segments to larger defensive lines, are covered with the same attention to detail as the more well-known fortifications. Much new information is available here on the defenses in Eastern Europe, as well. The descriptions and technical specifications of Europe's forts are supplemented by scores of remarkable technical drawings by Polish artist Robert M. Jurga.

310. DRESDEN: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1945
Frederick Taylor, C,

Newly opened archives presented Taylor with an opportunity to research anew the obliteration of the "Florence on the Elbe." Touching on assertions about the air attack that have made it controversial--that the city was of negligible military significance, or that its destruction was without purpose because the war was almost over--Taylor advances contrary evidence about the mounting of the attack and the cataclysmic firestorm it ignited. Cautious about drawing a particular moral conclusion, Taylor takes care to keep before readers details about the German rule in Dresden, hinting at his own opinion in this professional, accessible review of the controversy over the city's fate. Five chapters of 30 describe the actual bombing of the city by the British and American air forces, and they do so effectively, weaving first-person accounts of the aircrews with those of the terrified German soldiers and civilians. The aftermath of the raid is concisely dealt with, in the process correcting common perception about the numbers actually killed (approximately 25,000, not up to 250,000, as often cited), and he offers a review of the postwar debate on the morality of the bombing.

311. COMBAT JUMP: THE YOUNG MEN WHO LED THE ASSAULT INTO FORTRESS EUROPE, JULY 1943
Ed Ruggero, C,

The unit in focus in this book is the 505th Airborne Infantry: its organization, training, and combat debut in Sicily in July 1943. The training reflected highly on the regiment's CO, Colonel James Gavin, later a lieutenant general and one of the unsung heroes of World War II. But no amount of good training could completely counter the bad weather, faulty navigation, and limited intelligence that eventuated in the jumpers fighting Tiger tanks with bazookas. Scattered as it was, the 505th reorganized and carried out its mission, in the process so disorganizing German units that they could not carry out theirs. Its casualties were serious, but its success won paratroopers a permanent place in the American arsenal. Ruggero's thorough research, including interviews with many survivors, and excellent writing earn this book a permanent place in any WWII collection.

In this mammoth study Davies offers an enthralling, impressionistic account of the uprising, highlighted by vivid reminiscences from Polish and German participants, but the bulk of this sprawling book is concerned with the political background and aftermath. Delving into the diplomatic wranglings between the exiled Polish government in London, the Western Allies and Stalin, Davies sides with the anti-Communist interpretation of the episode as the opening chapter in the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe. He denounces Stalin for deliberately allowing the non-Communist Home Army to be crushed, the Western Allies for acquiescing and British intellectuals for toeing the Communist line on Poland, and includes a pointed litany of Stalinist crimes in post-war Poland.

This book is devoted to the development, manufacture, and use of American flying clothing before and during the war. Over 150 detailed photographs help identify types of suits, jackets, headgear, handwear, and footwear. The author devotes 107 pages to descriptions of all gear ever used in the air, right down to the throat mikes. Not a pretty picture book by all means, and I wouldn't even call it a photo book as the book is packed with information that will really make the reader knowledgeable on the subject. Also includes information on preserving, storing, and displaying old garment. There is also a detailed glossary identifying every abbreviation likely to be encountered with flying clothing, and much more.

314. COMBAT FLYING EQUIPMENT: U.S. ARMY AVIATOR'S PERSONAL EQUIPMENT, 1917 - 1945
C.G. Sweeting, S,O,

Personal anecdotes give meaning to the absorbing background story of research, testing, laboratory work, and combat experience. Why parachutes were issued to German airplane crewmen in World War I while none were available to Allied pilots? Who really was responsible for the design of the first modern, free-fall, back-type ripcord-operated parachute? What the secret wartime antigravity developments were that gave American fighter pilots an advantage over Axis flyers? What caused the failure of the AAF full-pressure suit program in 1943 and what ingenious alternative was successively introduced? Over 160 photographs illustrate the myriad types of oxygen equipment, parachutes, armor, pressure suits, and other flying equipment and survival gear. A detailed glossary, comprehensive index, and extensive notes make this book a definitive reference work packed with facts and information. Flyers, historians, aviation buffs, veterans, and aviation-memorabilia collectors will find Combat Flying Equipment an indispensable source.

315. AIRBORNE: A COMBAT HISTORY OF AMTERICAN AIRBORNE FORCES
E.M. Flanagan, C,

Tthis account ) emphasizes the WWII development and deployment of paratroopers. Vietnam and Gulf War chapters account for fewer than 100 of the nearly 500 pages here, and ground fighting is decidedly not emphasized. Flanagan assumes a basic knowledge of military terminology, but provides strategic and tactical background throughout. Combat jump episodes are well leavened with the experiences of individual soldiers (taken from memoirs and recollections), beginning in North Africa in 1942 and continuing through Sicily (where troops were caught in friendly anti-aircraft fire), New Guinea, an abortive 1943 jump on Rome and smaller Italian operations leading up to D-Day in Normandy in June 1944. Ground fighting during the Battle of the Bulge and several glider landings are also covered, and there is a refreshing amount of testimony relating to Pacific operations.

316. A PECULIAR CRUSADE: WILLIS M. EVERETT AND THE MALMEDY MASSACRE
James Weingartner, C,O,

Following World War II, 74 members of the Nazi SS were accused of a war crime—soon to be known as the Malmedy Massacre—in which a large number of American prisoners of war were murdered during the Battle of the Bulge. All of the German defendants were found guilty and more than half were sentenced to death. Yet none were executed and, a decade later, all had been released from prison. This outcome resulted primarily from the dogged efforts of Willis M. Everett Jr., a prominent Atlanta attorney who jeopardized his status as a member of the social elite to defend with great zeal the accused Germans. James Weingartner here offers fresh insights into one of the most controversial episodes of World War II, and in the process casts new light on the often convoluted politics of war crimes justice. There is lots of good information here on Jochen Peiper. Illustrated with photos. This author also wrote an excellent book on the Leibstandarte.

317. OUT OF NOWHERE: A HISTORY OF THE MILITARY SNIPER
Martin Pegler, C,O,

From the American War of Independence to World War II, the history of the military combat marksman is one of indifference and cost cutting. Despite the proven effectiveness of the rifleman in battle, for most of the 20th century snipers were regarded as little more than paid assassins. It was not until the Vietnam War that the undeniable effectiveness of the sniper was fully appreciated by the military, and with the advent of the 21st century the sniper has become one of the most vital battlefield specialists. Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photographs, this chronological study of snipers details their evolution, training, weaponry and tactics. It also includes material from the author’s first hand interviews with the veteran snipers whose skills and extraordinary courage have made them the most greatly feared specialists in warfare. A fantastic book at a fantastic price.

318. THE BURMA ROAD: THE EPCI STORY OF THE CHINE - BURMA - INDIA THEATER IN WWII
Donovan Webster, C,

Mountainous and malarial, northern Burma is terrible terrain for war, but the Allies resolved to fight there to keep China in World War II. The effort's executant, American general Joseph Stilwell, occupies center stage of Webster's chronicle, which benefits from the author's visits to battle sites and remnants of a supply road. Applying concrete visualization of the mud, leeches, and heat of tropical combat, Webster renders the misery experienced by soldiers on both Japanese and Allied sides, blending them with the tactical details of the war's ebb and flood in Burma. These flow into Webster's accounts of Merrill's Marauders, Wingate's Chindits, Chennault's Flying Tigers, and other such colorful objects of Eric Sevareid's and Theodore White's reportage, all under Stilwell's nominal control, as was, on paper but infrequently in fact, the military of Chiang Kai-shek. Stilwell's headaches running such a sprawling theater, are ably integrated by Webster into the infantryman's viewpoint: the result is a high-quality overview.

324. THE UNKNOWN HITLER: NOTES FROM THE YOUNG NAZI PARTY
Ernst Hanfstaengl, S,

Ernst Putzi Hanfstaengl played piano for Hitler — and Roosevelt and Churchill. He was the only Harvard graduate in the inner circle of the Nazi party before World War II. Hanfstaengl was so impressed with Hitler that he soon became one of his most intimate followers, although he did not formally join the Nazi party until 1931. After the unsuccessful 1923 beer hall putsch, Hitler fled to Hanfstaengl's home in Uffing, outside of Munich. Hanfstaengl relates in his book that Hitler wanted to shoot himself rather than be arrested, but Hanfstaengl's wife disarmed him with a judo grip her husband had taught her. Honed and polished over the years this book conveys an unforgettable impression on the reader. Hanfstanegl fled Germany in 1937 after an assassination attempt and eventually advised Roosevelt on the psychology of Hitler.

His sweeping narrative incorporates encyclopedic mastery of a massive body of source material, and is written in a style that holds attention from first page to last. 328. GULAG: LIFE AND DEATH INSIDE THE SOVIET CONCENTRATION CAMPS 1917 - 1990
Tomasz Kizny, C,O, this is a huge monster of a book, for comparison it is much bigger than the biggest of Fedorowicz titles.

Kizny, a Polish photographer and journalist, spent 15 years researching this amazing book, which contains 550 black-and-white photographs of life in the Soviet Gulag. In 1986 he began collecting eyewitness accounts from former Polish prisoners, and he traveled across the former USSR to find other witnesses and to photograph remnants of the Gulag, which was in operation from the 1920s to the 1980s and consisted of a network of concentration camps spread across the most northerly reaches of Europe and Asia. The harshness of the Arctic climate, the starvation levels of the diet, the length of the sentences, the routine brutality and depravity of the guards, the absence of proper medical care and of adequate heating and clothing, and the lack of hope inevitably produced a devastating mortality rate. Tens of millions of the convicts were frozen, starved, or worked or beaten to death. The photos gathered here range from official archival snapshots, showing both inmates and their captors, to scenes of enormous construction projects and snowbound ruins. Kizny has added his own photographs of the abandoned camps or work projects and included a brief history of the camps and personal accounts of survivors. These rare and historically significant photographs can only hint at the appalling horrors committed within the camps, and the importance of the book cannot be overstated.

Schom is a master of narrative technique, though not always of minor details of naval technology. He depicts the Japanese navy as probably superior in fighting power as well as numbers during this phase of the war. But it was critically weakened by poor logistical support against an American navy slowly learning to fight and rapidly building strength, thanks to America's matchless war productivity. A particular strength of the book consists of Schom's portraits of numerous leaders, some well known, such as MacArthur, about whom Schom is scathing, and Nimitz, about whom he waxes just this side of hagiography; and others who have been out of the limelight, such as Richmond Kelly Turner, an implacable and effective sea warrior with a terrible temper, and Frank Jack Fletcher, whose grasp of carrier warfare badly needed improvement.

331. VITAL CROSSROADS: MEDITERRANEAN ORIGINS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1945-1940
Reynolds Salerno, C,

Most international historians present the outbreak of World War II as the result of an irreconcilable conflict between Great Britain and Germany. This ubiquitous Anglo-German perspective fails to recognize complex causes and repercussions of international events, misappropriates historical responsibilities, and overlooks many global and imperial factors of the war’s origins. Reynolds M. Salerno shows that the situation in the Mediterranean played a decisive role in the European drama of the late 1930s and profoundly influenced the manner in which the Second World War unfolded. Vital Crossroads is the result of the author’s remarkable access to and extensive research in twenty-eight archives in five different countries. Concentrating on the period from the Mediterranean crisis of 1935 to Italy’s declaration of war in June 1940, Salerno demonstrates that the international politics of pre–World War II Europe—particularly in the Mediterranean—can only be understood as the multilateral interaction of British, French, German, and Italian foreign and defense policies. Control of the Mediterranean, he asserts, was a central concern for the European powers in 1935–40, and a fundamental reason why Europe went to war and why the conflict unfolded as it did. As a result, France and Italy influenced and often determined the nature and direction of Allied and Axis policy to an extent disproportionate to their nations’ military and economic strength. Salerno contends that the Allies’ reluctance to take decisive action against Fascist Italy in 1939–40 contributed to the fall of France in 1940, Britain’s desperate situation in 1940–41, and the post-war collapse of Britain as a world power. At a time when the Allied powers dreaded the ability of the German military to march across the European continent, they also feared that the Italian armed forces would strive to fulfill Mussolini’s grand imperial ambitions in the Mediterranean.

332. HITLER'S COMMANDER: FIELD MARSHAL WALTHER MODEL - HITLER'S FAVORITE GENERAL
Steven Newton, C,

Unlike many of his contemporaries—Rommel, Guderian, von Rundstedt—who have been rescued from the anonymity of defeat, Model (1891–1945) has "languished in relative obscurity." Historian Newton (Panzer Operations), hopes to remedy that in this first English-language biography of the general dubbed the "Führer's Fireman" and "the Lion of the Defense." Newton follows Model's career from his heroic service as a young lieutenant on the Western Front in WWI through his meteoric rise to the command of an army group during WWII. Newton aims not only to rescue Model from obscurity but to rehabilitate his frayed reputation as a "Hitler sycophant" and war criminal. (It didn't help that Model's "abrasive personality" made him few friends or admirers.) Drawing on his extensive research in German and American archives, German war diaries and memoirs, Newton presents a picture of a "tactical genius" who was "pro-Hitler" but not blindly so. Facing certain defeat in April 1945, Model destroyed his papers and committed suicide, making the task of any future biographer difficult. In the absence of personal papers, Newton manages to reconstruct Model the commander but not Model the man.

334. BATTLEGROUND ATLANTIC: HOW THE SINKING OF A SINGLE JAPANESE SUBMARINE ASSURED THE OUTCOM OF WORLD WAR II
Richard Billings, C,

On June 24, 1944, U.S. Navy warplanes patrolling the Atlantic attacked and sank a Japanese submarine, the I-52. It was an event of enormous strategic importance. The I-52's mission was to return to Japan with the ingredients of a radiological bomb. Purchased from the Germans, this doomsday weapon-classified secret by the U.S. government for years after the war-could have contaminated vast areas of America for decades, killing millions slowly and painfully. Japan had intended to use it in an attack on the California coast until the mission was detected in an Allied intelligence coup equal to the breaking of the Enigma code. The I-52's resting place was discovered in 1995 by ship salvager Paul R. Tidwell. Author Richard N. Billings has worked with Tidwell-whose attempts to salvage the I-52's precious gold cargo continue-in bringing her secret mission to light. Finally, this is the story of how the I-52 mission may have influenced President Truman's decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

For five months in 1944, a multinational Allied force pounded away at superbly entrenched German troops in a desperate attempt to force their way through to Rome. Parker's account of this campaign is both disturbing and uplifting. Using interviews with survivors and wartime letters, Parker captures the heroism, horror, and sheer brutality of a battle that rivals Stalingrad for savagery. In the end, the road was cleared and the Germans abandoned Rome, but they reestablished their strong defensive line further north, and they remained ensconced there until the end of the war. 337. EIGHTH ARMY: THE TRIUMPHANT DESERT ARMY THAT HELD THE AXIS AT BAY FROM NORTH AFRICA TO THE ALPS, 1939-45
Robin Neillands, C,

celebrates the British Eighth Army’s momentous defeat of Rommel at El Alamein—one of the first Allied successes against the Germans—in this thorough, informative, if over-indulgent account of its campaigns in North Africa and Italy. Neillands is incisive in his critique of the Eighth’s inferior weapons, inept tactics and incompetent leadership during its early defeats by Rommel, but his judgment falters once Montgomery, whom he considers a masterful general, takes command. He chalks up the El Alamein turn-around to Monty’s talents and the common soldiers’ grit; however, his detailed account of the struggle really depicts a clumsy battle of attrition that the British won by virtue of their colossal material superiority, including a six-to-one advantage in tanks. Later triumphs in Italy likewise hinged on "putting more weight into the attack: more guns, more men, more tanks, more shells, more aircraft." Somewhat perversely, Neillands spins Eighth Army’s use of "a sledgehammer to crack a nut" (and avoidance of daring maneuver) as a kind of strategic sophistication. Drawing on an oversupply of reminiscences by Eighth Army vets, Neillands keeps the focus of his detailed campaign narratives on the heroic exploits of small units and individual soldiers. Unfortunately, he can’t quite dispel the impression that Eighth Army—Monty included—did not fight brilliantly, relying instead on sheer numbers and firepower (especially from the Allied air forces, whose role he understates) to grind down the more skillful but increasingly outnumbered and outgunned Germans. Neillands’s treatment is well researched and lucidly written, but his sentimental emphasis on fighting spirit over brute force somewhat distorts the nature of the Allied victory. 30 b&w photos, 4 maps.

338. THE LONGEST BATTLE: SEPTEMBER 1944 TO FEBRUARY 1945 FROM AACHEN TO THE ROER AND ACROSS
Harry Yeide, C,

In the early afternoon of September 12, 1944, an American patrol entered Nazi Germany southwest of the ancient city of Aachen. Three months after the landing at Normandy, the Allies were finally within reach of the enemy on his home turf. Among the troops there was even talk of getting home for Christmas. What followed, though, was one of the most grueling campaigns of the war—the nearly six-month-long battle fully recounted for the first time in this powerful work. Combining stirring narrative and meticulous historical detail, The Longest Battle provides a complete and compelling account of what happened after the first breach of the Third Reich by Allied ground combat forces: of the troops’ terrible struggle across the Siegfried Line, Hitler’s vaunted West Wall, through the benighted Hurtgen Forest, and across the Roer. The strategic decisions and setbacks, the incremental advances, and catastrophic losses that marked this still-controversial but critically important battle unfold in all their historical, military, and human significance in Harry Yeide’s book—finally filling a gap in our understanding of World War II.

Richard Doherty, C,

The greatest military operation in history, the invasion of France on 6 June 1944 has become immortalised as D-Day or The Longest Day. This massive land, sea and air operation led to an eleven-month campaign that concluded with the surrender of Hitler's Germany in May 1945. But nothing that came after D-Day equalled the achievement of that day in terms of planning, preparation and logistics. It was an achievement that only four years before might have seemed like a flight of fancy. Normandy 1944 looks at the planning and preparation for the invasion, the launching of the greatest military operation of all time and the campaign that followed in the summer of 1944 until the Allied armies closed the Falaise Gap and the Germans began their retreat from France. The book looks at the personalities involved, the innovations employed and the experiences of those who fought in Normandy'.

Alex, Kershaw, C,

portraits the intelligence and reconnaissance platoon of the 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. That green division came squarely in the path of the Wehrmacht during the Battle of the Bulge, and that platoon was one of many small units that fought tenaciously to the bitter end. The whole platoon was captured, but only after they had held a crucial road junction long enough to seriously delay Joachim Pieper's SS battle group. More miraculously, all those captured, even the grievously wounded, survived the war; indeed, most were alive to receive decorations in 1980. The narrative moves from the GIs' combat experience at the Bulge to their POW experience until the closing days of the war, and Kershaw handles both combat and internment skillfully and respectfully. A good read for observing the sixtieth anniversary of the Bulge.

Ken Delve, C,O,

Operation ‘Overlord’ – the allied invasion of occupied France – began in the opening minutes of 6 June 1944. By the end of the day a bridgehead had been won and gradually the Allied Forces extended their grip. None of this would have been possible without air power.
In the weeks and months leading up to D-Day the RAF and USAAF waged a concerted campaign against fighter bases, troop depots, road and rail junctions and ammunition and fuel dumps: any target that would impede the Germans’ ability to repel the liberating forces.

343. JAPANESE PRISONERS OF WAR
Philip Towle, C,

During World War II the Japanese were stereotyped in the European imagination as fanatical, cruel, almost inhuman - an image reflected in most books and films about prisoner of war in the Far East. While the Japanese cetainly treated those they captured badly, behaving far worse to Chinese and native captives than to Europeans, the conventional view of the Japanese is unhistorical and simplistic. It fails to recognize that hte Japanese were acting at a time of supreme national crisis trial, at a particular period of their history, and that their attitudes were influenced by a combination of their perception of their own racial identity mixed with a powerful historical tradition. This collection of essays, by both western and Japanese scholars, aims to see the question from a historical viewpoint, and from both a western and Japanese perspective, looking at it in the light of both longer-term influences, notably the Japanese attempt to establish themselves as an honorary white race. The essays also examine particular instances. Conditions in the almost self-run camp at Changi contrasted remarkably with those on the Burma Railway, where disease and a failure to provide supplies caused terrible suffering. The book also addresses the other side of the question, looking at the treatment of Japanese prisoners in Allied captivity.

347. STILWELL THE PATRIOT: VINEGAR JOE, THE BRITS AND CHIANG KAI-SHEK
David Rooney, C,

This meticulously researched biography of the controversial American commander Joe Stilwell presents an admirably lucid account of his career and the complex story of the Burma campaign. Stilwell spent most of World War II as Chiang Kai-Shek's chief of staff in China. He was often at odds with the British generals Wavell, Slim and Wingate, men with whom he was to co-operate in Burma. These arguments earned him the nickname of 'Vinegar' Joe. Stilwell and George Marshall had planned to have ninety Chinese divisions armed by the USA. Had they succeeded, in 1945 they would have been strong enough to defeat the Communists and would have changed the course of Chinese, if not world, history. Although Chiang had Stilwell dismissed, he recognized his contribution to the Burma Road campaign by renaming part of it the Stilwell Road. This sympathetic but critical biography analyses the passions of an American patriot, infuriated by Chiang's dishonesty and chicanery, and looks at the possible outcome had Stilwell's views prevailed. After World War II service in the Far East and Ghana, David Rooney read history at Oxford and subsequently took a research degree in Commonwealth History. His career in education included four years as Senior Lecturer at RMA Sandhurst. His writings include Burma Victory, considered by Brigadier Michael Calvert the best book yet on the Burma Campaign, Wingate and the Chindits, Mad Mike, and his recent highly acclaimed Guerrilla.

348. USS RANGER: THE NAVY'S FIRST FLATTOP FROM KEEL TO MAST 1934-1946
Robert Cressman, S,O,

USS Ranger (CV-4) was the U.S. Navy’s first aircraft carrier to be built as such from the keel up. The Ranger helped maintain the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration’s Good Neighbor Policy, served as a platform for the development of new methods for the operation of carriers and carrier aircraft, continued the Navy’s work in cold-weather flight operations, pioneered director-controlled antiaircraft fire, and trained many naval aviators. During World War II, the Ranger occupied center stage in Operation Torch (against the Vichy French positions in North Africa in 1942) and Operation Leader (against German shipping in 1943), which was the Navy’s only carrier operation above the Arctic Circle during the war. In both instances, the ship’s air group faced the requirement to hit legitimate military targets while minimizing civilian casualties, a problem the United States would confront again in later conflicts. Robert J. Cressman’s emphasis on the human element in both peace and war reinforces his observation that carriers, like people, have multifaceted personalities, represented by not only the ship and its company, but also the air group for which it serves as home.

Thomas A. Tullis, S,O

Written and illustrated by Thomas A. Tullis, the finest computer aviation artist at work today, EagleFiles #4 supplements the histories and biographies that have been published on the A.V. G. Combining research with his own artwork, Tullis has created the type of reference book many have searched for, a complete compendium on the color and markings of the aircraft flown by the American Volunteer Group. Much has been written about the men and missions of the A.V.G., but little has been published documenting the machines they used. Tullis presents a complete color discussion, full color Squadron markings for the First, Second and Third Pursuit Squadrons, full color presentations of the six different shark's mouths, National markings (Chinese roundels) and stenciling. 349. STALIN AND HIS HANGMEN: THE TYRANT AND THOSE WHO KILLED FOR HIM
Donald Rayfield, C

Stalin did not act alone. The mass executions, the mock trials, the betrayals and purges, the jailings and secret torture that ravaged the Soviet Union during the three decades of Stalin’s dictatorship, were the result of a tight network of trusted henchmen (and women), spies, psychopaths, and thugs. At the top of this pyramid of terror sat five indispensable hangmen who presided over the various incarnations of Stalin’s secret police. Now, in his harrowing new book, Donald Rayfield probes the lives, the minds, the twisted careers, and the unpunished crimes of Stalin’s loyal assassins.

Founded by Feliks Dzierzynski, the Cheka–the Extraordinary Commission–came to life in the first years of the Russian Revolution. Spreading fear in a time of chaos, the Cheka proved a perfect instrument for Stalin’s ruthless consolidation of power. But brutal as it was, the Cheka under Dzierzynski was amateurish compared to the well-oiled killing machines that succeeded it. Genrikh Iagoda’s OGPU specialized in political assassination, propaganda, and the manipulation of foreign intellectuals. Later, the NKVD recruited a new generation of torturers. Starting in 1938, terror mastermind Lavrenti Beria brought violent repression to a new height of ingenuity and sadism.

As Rayfield shows, Stalin and his henchmen worked relentlessly to coerce and suborn leading Soviet intellectuals, artists, writers, lawyers, and scientists. Maxim Gorky, Aleksandr Fadeev, Alexei Tolstoi, Isaak Babel, and Osip Mandelstam were all caught in Stalin’s web–courted, toyed with, betrayed, and then ruthlessly destroyed. In bringing to light the careers, personalities, relationships, and “accomplishments” of Stalin’s key henchmen and their most prominent victims, Rayfield creates a chilling drama of the intersection of political fanaticism, personal vulnerability, and blind lust for power spanning half a century.

Though Beria lost his power–and his life–after Stalin’s death in 1953, the fundamental methods of the hangmen maintained their grip into the second half of the twentieth century. Indeed, Rayfield argues, the tradition of terror, far from disappearing, has emerged with renewed vitality under Vladimir Putin. Written with grace, passion, and a dazzling command of the intricacies of Soviet politics and society, Stalin and the Hangmen is a devastating indictment of the individuals and ideology that kept Stalin in power.

This study of Pearl Harbor's most famous casualty is less a biography of a warship than a sympathetic profile of the crew and their activities. Military hardware buffs may be disappointed with the lack of nuts-and-bolts technical detail about hull and weapon systems, but the story of the ship's career is presented in profusely illustrated detail. Stillwell conducted numerous interviews with Arizona veterans and ends up with a captivating group portrait of officers and enlisted men. He also provides highly readable insight into the swagger and professionalism that made up the once-invincible "Battleship Navy."

357. COMBINED FLEET DECODED THE SECRET HISTORY OF AMERICAN INTELLIGENCE AND THE JAPANESE NAVY IN WWII
John Prados, S, may have a slight amount of shelfwear.

Written in the style of a thriller but solidly based on an array of sources, this study reinterprets the entire sea campaign in the Pacific, using intelligence as the missing key to the Allied success. It examines every aspect of the secret war of intelligence--from radio dispatches and espionage to vital information from prisoners and document translation--showing how U.S. intelligence outsmarted Japan nearly every step of the way. The resulting assessment is a virtual rewriting of history that challenges previous conceptions about the Pacific conflict. John Prados relates the growing intelligence knowledge on both sides to the progress and outcome of naval actions. Along the way he offers a wealth of revelations that include data on how the United States caught the superbattleship Yamato and the impact of intelligence on the initial campaigns in the Philippines and Netherlands East Indies and the escape of American codebreakers from Corregidor. He also provides colorful vignettes of personalities who shaped the secret intelligence war. This ambitious work is not simply a rundown of code-breaking successes, but an astonishing demonstration of how the day-to-day accumulation of knowledge can produce extraordinary results. Its accounting of Japanese intelligence is unprecedented in detail. Its reassessment of battles and campaigns is presented not just in terms of troops or ships but in how the secret war actually played out. Lauded as a major new study when published in hardcover in 1995, the book remains the most comprehensive study written. For sheer drama and gut-level operational practicality, it ranks with the very best.

358. THEY SAILED THE SKIES: U.S. NAVY BALLOONS AND THE AIRSHIP PROGRAM
J. Gordon Vaeth, C,O, may have a very slight amount of shelfwear.

Retired naval officer and lighter-than-air veteran Vaeth offers a valuable and concise summary of the U.S. Navy's efforts to fly while buoyed by gas. The great dirigibles, of which four out of five crashed, have been the primary focus of previous similar accounts, and they are clearly and cogently dealt with here. Less covered have been the nonrigid airships, whose story began with a class of vehicles based on a British design; these served ably in World War I. The interwar period was followed by a veritable renaissance of blimps and of training men to fly them during World War II. Naval blimps pretty much died out after the war, but the swan song of U.S. Navy lighter-than-air use, the high--altitude endurance flights of Project Strato-Lab, ceased only with the coming of space flight. Besides all this, Vaeth even notes naval officers flying in balloon races, among them his friend the late Thomas Settle, who once held a world high-altitude record. Illustrated.

360. AMERICAN RAIDERS: THE RACE TO CAPTURE THE LUFTWAFFE'S SECRETS
Wolfgang Samuel, C,O, remainder mark on bottom.

At the close of World War II, Allied forces faced frightening new German secret weapons---buzz bombs, V-2s, and the first jet fighters. When Hitler's war machine began to collapse, the race was on to snatch these secrets before the Soviet Red Army found them.
The last battle of World War II, then, was not for military victory but for the technology of the Third Reich. In American Raiders: The Race to Capture the Luftwaffe's Secrets Wolfgang Samuel assembles from official Air Force records and survivors' interviews the largely untold stories of the disarmament of the once mighty Luftwaffe and of Operation Lusty---the hunt for Nazi technologies. In April 1945 American armies were on the brink of winning their greatest military victory, yet America's technological backwardness was shocking when measured against that of the retreating enemy. Senior officers, including the Commanding General of the Army Air Forces "Hap" Arnold, knew all too well the seemingly overwhelming victory was less than it appeared. There was just too much luck involved in its outcome. Two intrepid American Army Air Forces colonels set out to regain America?s technological edge. One, Harold E. Watson, went after the German jets; the other, Donald L. Putt, went after the Nazis' intellectual capital---their world-class scientists. With the help of German and American pilots, Watson brought the jets to America; Putt persevered as well and succeeded in bringing the German scientists to the Army Air Forces' aircraft test and evaluation center at Wright Field. A young P-38 fighter pilot, Lloyd Wenzel, a Texan of German descent then turned these enemy aliens into productive American citizens---men who built the rockets that took America to the moon, conquered the sound barrier with their swept wing aircraft designs, and laid the foundation for America's civil and military aviation of the future. American Raiders: The Race to Capture the Luftwaffe's Secrets details the contest won, a triumph that shaped America's victories in the Cold War.

361. THE WAGES OF DESTRUCTION: THE MAKING AND BREAKING OF THE NAZI ECONOMY
Adam Tooze, C,

In this groundbreaking new history, Adam Tooze provides the clearest picture to date of the Nazi war machine and its undoing. There was no aspect of Nazi power untouched by economics—it was Hitler’s obsession and the reason the Nazis came to power in the first place. The Second World War was fought, in Hitler’s view, to create a European empire strong enough to take on the United States. But as The Wages of Destruction makes clear, Hitler’s armies were never powerful enough to beat either Britain or the Soviet Union—and Hitler never had a serious plan as to how he might defeat the United States. The Wages of Destruction is an eye-opening and controversial account that will challenge conventional interpretations of the period.

365. HELL IS UPON US: D-DAY IN THE PACIFIC JUNE - AUGUST 1944
Victor Brooks, C,

Another "D-Day," the initial amphibious assault on the Marianas Islands in the Pacific, which began just nine days after the Normandy landings. The conquest of the Marianas ensured American supremacy in the central Pacific, crippled Japanese air and naval power, and left the Japanese home islands vulnerable to devastating B-29 attacks. Brooks is a professor and the author of several works on military history. He has written a detailed but very readable chronicle of a campaign notable not only for the heroism of its participants on both sides but also for the raw savagery of battle in which atrocities were common. Brooks provides cogent explanations of the broad strategic objectives of both Japanese and American military planners. He also offers a compelling portrait of Admiral Ernest King, the chief of naval operations. This opinionated, profane, and confrontational sailor was a brilliant naval strategist who has rarely received the acclaim he deserves. This is an excellent account of a campaign that guaranteed final victory in the Pacific theater.

366. HITLER FILMOGRAPHY FEATURE FILMS/TELEVISION 1940-2000

The Hitler Filmography: Worldwide Feature Film and Television Miniseries Portrayals, 1940 through 2000
Charles P. Mitchell, C-,O

Adolf Hitler was arguably the most evil figure of the twentieth century. From the time his Nazi regime launched World War II to the present time, he has frequently been depicted on film. He was largely ridiculed at first, since laughter was a powerful weapon and morale booster for nations at war. Later representations were more somber and realistic, yet Hitler’s image never escaped the undertone of scorn. This book concentrates exclusively on portrayals of Hitler in feature films and television miniseries. Criteria for inclusion requires that Hitler be represented on screen by an actor. The filmography covers films with a factual historical storyline, fictional stories about Hitler (e.g., They Saved Hitler’s Brain), alternate histories (e.g., Fatherland), parodies (e.g., Undercovers Hero), and films where actors playing Hitler have a cameo (e.g., Blazing Saddles). Each entry in the filmography provides production credits, an annotated cast list, an analysis and synopsis of the film, an evaluation of the actor playing Hitler in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of his portrayal, and a representative selection of quotations from the film.

367. FAIREY AIRCRAFT SINCE 1915
H.A. Taylor, C

From the very early days Fairey was one of the great names in British aviation, and although its successors no longer build aircraft, the name continues in other aeronautical spheres. During the long period form the 191418 war until well after the Second World War, Fairey's name was always associated with British naval aircraft--there was the long series of Fairey IIIs which served the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm and which in its final form saw widespread service with the RAF before being developed into the Gordon and the Seal. One of the best-remembered and best-loved aeroplanes was the Swordfish--a multipurpose biplane which outlived its intended successor, the Albacore. Fulmars, Firefly monoplanes and Barracudas all played a wartime role. The final Fairey naval aeroplane was the Ganneta unique twin-engined aeroplane having the layout and appearance of a single-engined type. All these types, and many others, are fully described and illustrated by photographs and three-view drawings, and there is a complete listing of aircraft by constructor's numbers.

368. STALIN'S FOLLY: THE TRAGIC TEN DAYS OF WWII ON THE EASTERN FRONT
Constantine Pleshakov, C,

The author supports the revisionist thesis that Stalin was not deceived about Hitler's ultimate intentions, only their timing, and was planning a preemptive attack into Poland and the Balkans—in 1942. Soviet deployments certainly make this plausible, as do other factors, such as the failure to build up defenses on the new Soviet border after stripping the old ones of most of their weapons and troops. The Germans, as is well known, struck first, and the result was a Russian military disaster of such proportions as to influence history to this day. The book is well-balanced, moving from the Kremlin, where Stalin was in denial and Zhukov was at least keeping his head, to soldiers of every rank from general to unarmed private. With his talent for assembling gripping narratives out of long-suppressed sources, Pleshakov will bring joy to fans of John Erickson.

370. . AXIS SLOVAKIA: HITLER'S SLAVIC WEDGE, 1938-1945
Mark Axworthy, C,O,

this book is surely the definitive study on the history of the puppet Slovak state which was created, supported, and sustained by the Third Reich. Axworthy has carefully compiled the military history of the Slovak State complex complete with the political, economic, social, and personal reasons why things occurred as they did. Through hundreds of period photographs, tables, charts, line drawings and color uniform plates, this military study is woven into a seamless and perfect tapestry, accurately depicting a little known aspect of WWII. Slovakia's armed forces took part in the invasion of Poland, and briefly fought the Hungarians before participating in their largest and most dangerous endeavor - the invasion of the Soviet Union. The Slovak contribution in Russia included several divisions and lasted from 1941- 1943. In 1944 a part of the Slovak Army rebelled against the Germans and their uprising lasted from the end of August until late October 1944. In effect, this work covers the military and political history of the Slovak state quite thoroughly. Oversize book with deluxe cloth binding, very nicely produced. Axworthy also wrote the definitive study on the Romanian armed forces in WWII.

377. OMAHA BEACH: A FLAWED VICTORY
Adrian R. Lewis, C, This is not the cheap bookclub edition, and believe me, I've seen it, it is cheap cheap cheap.

The Allied victory at Omaha Beach was a costly one. A direct infantry assault against a defense that was years in the making, undertaken in daylight following a mere thirty-minute bombardment, the attack had neither the advantage of tactical surprise nor that of overwhelming firepower. American forces were forced to improvise under enemy fire, and although they were ultimately victorious, they suffered devastating casualties. Why did the Allies embark on an attack with so many disadvantages? Making extensive use of primary sources, Adrian Lewis traces the development of the doctrine behind the plan for the invasion of Normandy to explain why the battles for the beaches were fought as they were. Although blame for the Omaha Beach disaster has traditionally been placed on tactical leaders at the battle site, Lewis argues that the real responsibility lay at the higher levels of operations and strategy planning. Ignoring lessons learned in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters, British and American military leaders employed a hybrid doctrine of amphibious warfare at Normandy, one that failed to maximize the advantages of either British or U.S. doctrine. Had Allied forces at the other landing sites faced German forces of the quality and quantity of those at Omaha Beach, Lewis says, they too would have suffered heavy casualties and faced the prospect of defeat.

Organized chronologically by division and formation date, the book describes in depth the various models of tank and other armored and soft vehicles in service with the ‘fighting’ SS, with listings of unit commanders, vehicle types and numbers, and unit structure. Each divisional section is further broken down by campaign, accompanied by orders of battle, a brief divisional history of the campaign, and any specific unit markings. Every SS division that saw combat is featured, from well-known units such as the elite Das Reich and Wiking divisions, to lesser-known divisions, such as the 11th Waffen-SS Panzer Division Nordland and the Albanian-recruited 21st Waffen-SS Gebirgs-Division Skanderbeg. With information boxes accompanying the full-color artworks, all drawn to the same scale for easy comparison, The Essential Vehicle Identification Guide: Waffen-SS Divisions, 1939–45 is a key reference guide for modelers and military history enthusiasts with an interest in the Waffen-SS divisions of World War II. 250 illustrations and 30 photographs

379. THE YOUNG HITLER I KNEW
August Kubizek, C,

August Kubizek met Adolf Hitler in 1904 while they were both competing for standing room at the opera. Their mutual passion for music created a strong bond, and over the next four years they became close friends. Kubizek describes a reticent young man, painfully shy, yet capable of bursting into hysterical fits of anger if anyone disagreed with him. The two boys would often talk for hours on end; Hitler found Kubizek to be a very good listener, a worthy confidant to his hopes and dreams. In 1908 Kubizek moved to Vienna and shared a room with Hitler at 29 Stumpergasse. During this time, Hitler tried to get into art school, but he was unsuccessful. With his money fast running out, he found himself sinking to the lower depths of the city: an unkind world of isolation and ‘constant unappeasable hunger’. Hitler moved out of the flat in November, without leaving a forwarding address; Kubizek did not meet his friend again until 1938. The Young Hitler I Knew tells the story of an extraordinary friendship, and gives fascinating insight into Hitler’s character during these formative years. This is the first edition to be published in English since 1955 and it includes important sections which were excised from the original English translation.

380. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
Roy Nesbit, C,O,

The Battle of the Atlantic was one of the major turning points of World War II, and the very survival of Britain depended on its outcome. Fought largely between the German U-boats and Allied convoys, this deadly battle involved vast amounts of men, airplanes, ships and submarines fighting above, across and beneath thousands of miles of ocean. In the end, the Allies won - but only just. This book examines the battle from both sides. On the side of the Allies, ships of the Royal and Commonwealth navies and aircraft of the RAF played by far the greatest part in this battle, supported on the other side of the Atlantic by elements of the US and Canadian air forces and navies. The German Navy's U-boat force, and to a lesser extent its surface vessels, were the skilled and determined assailants who very nearly won the day. Following the formula adopted in his two previous books ("RAF: An Illustrated History" and "The Battle of Britain"), Roy Nesbit has written a short, but detailed, narrative of the battle, accompanied by a selection of some 200 archive photographs and paintings.

381. HITLER'S WARRIORS
Guido Knopp, C,

In this book Knopp turns to the careers of six key military leaders of the Third Reich, and their relationships with Hitler. Field-Marshal Erwin Rommel, the hero of North Africa, fitted perfectly with the cliches of Nazi propaganda. In October 1944, however, Rommel was forced to take his own life, as Hitler was convinced that the 'Desert Fox' was implicated in the July Bomb Plot. Like many of those who surrounded Hitler, Wehrmacht chief of staff Field-Marshal Wilhelm Keitel was simply too weak to accept where his actions were leading. Instead, he took refuge in obedience without limit.
In January 1943 Friedrich Paulus became the first German field-marshal ever to surrender on the battlefield. Having held Stalingrad for five months against all odds, he defied Hitler and led the remnants of Sixth Army into Russian captivity. He then worked for the Soviets, calling on Germany to surrender. Field-Marshal Erich von Manstein was the architect of the defeat of France in 1940, the greatest triumph in German military history. On military questions Manstein vigorously contradicted the Fuhrer, who suspected his politics and finally dismissed him. Ernst Udet, the most successful German fighter pilot to survive the First World War, was personally selected by Hitler to build up and equip the Luftwaffe, but all he had ever wanted was to fly. Overwhelmed by his duties, blamed by those around him for German failure in the Battle of Britain and abandoned by his allies, Udet killed himself in November 1941. Finally, no leading figure in Hitler's dictatorship has been surrounded by more mystery than Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, the Third Reich's foreign intelligence service. Hanged by the SS only days before the war ended, Canaris' last words were: 'I did my duty as a German.'

382. SOMME 1916: A BATTLEFIELD COMPANION
Gerald Gliddon, C,

This survey of the Somme battlefield has become an indispensable reference work for all those with an interest in this most horrific of First World War battles. Set out topographically, it covers everything from the famous battle sites of High Wood and Mametz Wood to obscure villages on the outlying flanks. The British first began to take the Somme sector over from the French Army in June 1915. From this time onwards they built up a very close bond with the local population, many of whom continued to live in local villages close to the front line. The author draws on the latest research and analysis, as well as the testimony of those who took part, to present all aspects of a battle that was to become a symbol of the horrors of the Great War.

386.ASSAULT ON SICILY: MONTY AND PATTON AT WAR
Ken Ford, C,

On the night of July 9, 1943, an Allied armada of 2,590 vessels launched one of the largest combined operations of the World War II, Operation Husky—the invasion of Sicily. For 38 days, half a million Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen grappled with the Germans and Italians for this toehold on Hitler's "Fortress Europe," hampered by missed rendezvous, international rivalries, and poorly performing troops. Ken Ford's history shows that, while it yielded valuable lessons in tactical air support, and ultimately an Allied victory, Husky also underscored the difficulties of coordinating two powerful armies with egotistical commanders—the British under Montgomery and the Americans under Patton—and sowed the seeds for further rivalry at Normandy.

388. HITLER'S OLYMPICS: THE 1936 BERLIN OLYMPIC GAMES
Christopher Hilton, C,

In hindsight it is ironic that the choice to hold the 1936 Olympics in Berlin was meant to show that Germany was once again a trustworthy player on the world stage. For Hitler, however, it was a massive propaganda exercise on behalf of the Nazi party and the Aryan race. To Hitler's displeasure, four-time gold medal-winner Jesse Owens was the star of the show, but what is less commonly remembered is that Germany won more medals than any other nation, thereby bolstering its claims to supremacy. Christopher Hilton uses newspapers, diaries, and interviews to uncover the behind-the-scenes machinations used by the Nazis to fashion the Olympics in their own image. Hilton reveals what happened to some of the competitors afterwards, and includes 16 pages of rarely-seen photographs.

Despite his attempts to keep a stiff upper lift and urge his people to resist until the end, the war was clearly lost. This spotlight on his turbulent final 20 months shows Il Duce as a broken man whose prestige had vanished, culminating in his execution by the Italian Resistance, and Ray Moseley attempts to determine who actually pulled the trigger. Moseley also shows the alleged correspondence between Mussolini and Churchill to have been fraudulent.

Altogether some 200 British citizens were under investigation for assisting the enemy; here, using case studies, Sean Murphy uncovers the reasons for their treacherous activities, describes how they collaborated with the enemy, explores their fates, and also discusses the sympathies of such alleged Nazi sympathizers as the Duke of Windsor and P.G. Tony Le Tissier, S, (paperback)

In April 1945, an offensive launched by Soviet Marshalls Zhukov and Koniev isolated the German Ninth Army and thousands of refugees in the Spreewald "pocket," just southeast of Berlin. Stalin ordered that they be encircled and destroyed, and his subordinates were quick to oblige. Any hope that the Ninth Army had for survival required that they pass through Halbe, a region strewn with barricades and other obstacles, and now under heavy artillery fire. Tony Le Tissier tells of hardened Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS veterans fighting alongside teenagers, and that some soldiers changed into civilian guise and fled to the forest. Although 40,000 German troops were killed and many more taken prisoner, a third of the Ninth Army fought its way to comparative safety.

Frederic Boyce tells here how from January until April 1945, SOE rained propaganda leaflets on a population fleeing ruined cities; they broadcast messages to the resistance; they planted scandalous lies about eminent Nazis; and finally dropped four agents on fictitious missions.

398. THE DAY OF BATTLE: THE WAR IN SICILY AND ITALY, 1943 - 1944
Rick Atkinson, C

Atkinson surpasses his Pulitzer-winning An Army at Dawn in this empathetic, perceptive analysis of the second stage in the U.S. Army's grassroots development from well-intentioned amateurs to the most formidable fighting force of World War II. The battles in Sicily and Italy developed the combat effectiveness and the emotional hardness of a U.S. Army increasingly constrained to bear the brunt of the Western allies' war effort, he argues. Demanding terrain, harsh climate and a formidable opponent confirmed the lesson of North Africa: the only way home was through the Germans: kill or be killed. Atkinson is pitilessly accurate demonstrating the errors and misjudgments of senior officers, Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander, Gen. Mark Clark and their subordinates commanding corps and divisions. The price was paid in blood by the men at the sharp end: British and French, Indians and North Africans—above all, Americans. All that remained of the crew of one burned-out tank were the fillings of their teeth, for one example. The Mediterranean campaign is frequently dismissed by soldiers and scholars as a distraction from the essential objective of invading northern Europe. Atkinson makes a convincing case that it played a decisive role in breaking German power, forcing the Wehrmacht onto a defensive it could never abandon.

400. 101ST AIRBORNE: THE SCREAMING EAGLES IN WWII
Mark Bando, C,O

In 1942, the 82nd Infantry Division at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, was split in two. One of the new divisions began intense preparations and training for a surprise landing on the Nazi-occupied European continent. The location was Normandy, France; the date was June 6, 1944; and the division was the 101st Airborne: the legendary "band of brothers." This is the story of that divisions heroic performance on D-Day, and right up to the Allied victory in Europe. Filled with historic images, many never before published, it is also a tribute to the fallen men of the 101st--the artists and athletes, scientists and mathematicians, architects and builders whose sacrifice secured the future but left the human race much diminished. Theirs is an accomplishment well-known but rarely so dramatically depicted: Here is the 101st landing on Utah Beach, coming in by parachute, or glider, or from the sea. Stirring words and pictures capture the landing, linking the Utah and Omaha beachheads; the divisions breaking of the German drive to the coast; and their brilliant stand at Bastogne; a refusal to yield so famously summed up in the commanders reply to a German call for surrender: "Nuts." The text is all new, but some photos have appeared in other books, some are brand new for this book.

When Britain appealed to America in 1940 for the transfer of fifty vessels for anti-submarine duty, Buchanan was one of the first 'gift horses' to be transferred. This highly acclaimed series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory perspective views. Eric Hammel, C,O  HAS SOME SHELF WEAR

Iwo Jima is perhaps the hardest won and most famous battle in the Pacific theater during World War II. The award-winning, iconic photo of Marines raising the American flag during the battle is known by millions of Americans as the symbol of how hard fought the victory was in the war. Iwo Jima: Portrait of a Battle: United States Marines in the Pacific takes this iconic flag-raising photo one step further. In incredible duotone reproduction, over 500 photos taken by Marine Corps combat photographers are featured, including over 300 never before published that were discovered in Marine Corps archives by author and military historian Eric Hammel. The photos vividly recreate the battle of Iwo Jima, as it happened: the pummeling of inland targets, the strafing, and the rocket fire that accompanied the landing; the eerie silence that greeted the Marines as they set foot on the island; and then, as the newly-landed Marines regrouped on the shoreline, the horrors of all hell breaking loose. The fighting that followed-thirty-four of the bloodiest days of the Pacific War-comes to harrowing life in this volume. Iwo Jima is a uniquely fitting tribute to the valiant struggle that gave us our most enduring image of victory in World War II. The book is an instant classic military history of the Marines in World War II and a necessary addition to any serious collection of World War II literature. This is a massive book, a great bargain at this price.

Eric Hammel, C,O

The victory of the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal, told here in pictures for the first time, ranks with the most heroic, dramatic, and enduring of military history. The six-month long Guadalcanal campaign was by far the longest and most complicated operation the Marines faced in the Pacific War. It began with the weapons and tactics of the Marine Corps 1918 combat in France and ended with the revised weapons and tactics that would sweep aside the Japanese defenders of numerous formidable bases all across the wide Pacific--bringing the United States armed forces to total victory in the Pacific in World War II. This book is a fitting tribute to the men who sacrificed so much in winning this first stepping stone on the path to Tokyo Bay and victory over Japan.

405. NAVAL FIREPOWER: BATTLESHIP GUNS AND GUNNERY IN THE DREADNOUGHT ERA
Norman Friedman, C,O, has slightly bumped corners.

For more than half a century the big gun was the arbiter of naval power, but it was useless if it could not hit the target fast and hard enough to prevent the enemy doing the same. Because the naval gun platform was itself in motion, U.S. naval analyst Norman Friedman explains in this new book, finding a "firing solution" was a significant problem made all the more difficult when gun sizes increased and fighting ranges lengthened and seemingly minor issues like wind velocity had to be factored in. To speed up the process and eliminate human error, navies sought a reliable mechanical calculation. This heavily illustrated book outlines for the first time in layman's terms the complex subject of fire-control, as it dominated battleship and cruiser design from before World War I to the end of the dreadnought era. He explains the directors, range-finders, and electro-mechanical computers invented to solve the problems. Friedman not only explains how the technology shaped—and was shaped by—the tactics involved, but analyzes systems' effectiveness in battle. His examination of the controversy surrounding Jutland and the relative merits of competing fire-control systems draws conclusions that will surprise some readers. He also analyzes many other major gun actions, such as the battles between the Royal Navy and the Bismarck and the U.S. vs Japanese actions in the Solomons and at Surigao Strait. All major navies are covered, and the story concludes at the end of World War II with the impact of radar. With line drawings by A.D. Baker III and W.J. Jurens, 240 photos,

406. HOSTILE SKY: A HELLCAT FLYER IN THE PACIFIC
James Wilson, C

In the summer of 1942 Jim Vernon, a nineteen-year-old college student in Butte, Montana, joined the U.S. Navy's aviation cadet training program and by the spring of 1945 was flying F6F Hellcats from the USS Ticonderoga off of the coast of Japan. This memoir of his years at war provides a carrier pilot's view of the conflict in the Pacific during the final months of the war when the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan capitulated. He gives an up-close-and-personal account of life in a bomber-fighter squadron and the roller-coaster emotions involved in combat sorties over the hostile sea and land. As a member of VBF-87, Vernon offers a unique glimpse into the past at a time when teenagers matured rapidly as they faced the realities of war. He has recorded his own feelings about meeting the challenges of war, his love of flying, and the camaraderie of his flying mates--both in the air and on liberty--along with the factual details of battle that contribute important dimensions to the overall story of the air war. Added to these stirring memories are his entertaining descriptions of the mobilization and training of carrier pilots and his recounting of the high incidence of non-combat fatalities and the change in the composition of the air group in response to the Kamikaze threat. Such a book not only will appeal to aviators everywhere but also will prove to be a thrilling read for those interested in World War II and air combat.

Images of Kursk is an illustrated account of a pivotal battle on the eastern front during World War II. At Kursk, the Germans threw 900,000 men and 2,500 tanks against more than 1 million soldiers and 3,000 tanks of the Red Army in a savage battle of attrition. Unlike many pictorial accounts of the war on the eastern front, Images of Kursk draws upon both German and Russian archive material. All the photographs of the Red Army at Kursk, moreover, are previously unpublished images. The book begins with the buildup of forces before the battle and then illustrates the offensive by two German army groups against the Kursk salient. The images convey the true scale, intensity, and horror of the fighting as the Germans tried in vain to batter their way through the Soviet defensive systems. A chapter is devoted to the climactic battle at the village of Prokhorovka, in which 1,000 tanks engaged each other furiously at point-blank range. With authoritative text and extended captions,Images of Kursk is an enthralling pictorial record of the battle that shifted the strategic initiative on the eastern front to the Red Army for good. Iain Ballantyne, C,O-

No warship name in British naval history has more battle honors than Warspite. This book examines the careers of all eight vessels to bear the name since 1596, but concentrates on the seventh vessel--the dreadnought battleship conceived as the ultimate answer to German naval power during the pre-World War I arms race. HMS Warspite fought off the entire German fleet at Jutland, survived a mutiny between the wars, and covered herself in glory during World War II. Flagship of Sir John Cunningham when he mastered the Italian Navy in the Mediterranean, Warspite's many wartime adventures included narrowly avoiding destruction by the Japanese carrier force that devastated Pearl Harbor and providing crucial fire support for Allied landings in Sicily, Italy, and Normandy. The voices of the men who fought aboard Warspite bring to life this stirring tale that will appeal to everyone with an interest in naval history and the ships that symbolized the great seafaring nation.

Bernard Edwards, C

With their very long range, the giant Type IX U-Cruisers gave Admiral Donitz¹s U-boat fleet global reach. Initially these boats operated with considerable success off the East coast of America and in the Caribbean but their main impact was in the Gulf of Guinea 1942-43 which, due to the closure of the Suez Canal, was a vital Allied supply route. Two submarines in particular (U-68 and U-505) had a profound effect causing major panic by their hugely successful operations.

414. HIMMLER'S SECRET WAR: THE COVERT PEACE NEGOTIATIONS OF HEINRICH HIMMLER
Martin Allen, C,

Martin Allen has achieved pre-eminence as a researcher and writer specializing in the Second World War. In this, his third major book, Heinrich Himmler, Head of the SS, emerges as a man with a huge personal agenda. Having secured for himself an unassailable position by manipulating Hitler into wiping out the SS's left-wing rivals, the SA, in The Night of the Long Knives, he continued to nurture political supremacy for himself while Hitler fought his military war. At the heart of Himmler's Secret War is the turning point of the war when, following the German defeat at Stalingrad, Himmler recognized that Germany would lose. Through his trusted envoy, Walter Schellenberg, he devoted much energy to negotiating his intended post-war role as the man who would lead Germany. He believed his intermediary, the British Ambassador in Sweden, Victor Mallet, was in direct contact with Winston Churchill. In fact, he was the victim of a highly effective sting by the Political Warfare Executive (PWE).

J.R. Smith and Anthony Kay, C,O,

This revised edition of a publication first published in 1972 contains a complete historical record of the more than 600 types of aircraft that served in the German aviation arm during World War II. Among those included are the Junkers, Focke-Wulf, Arado, Blohm und Voss, Bücker, Heinkel, Gotha, Deutsches Forschungsinstitut, Fieseler, and the legendary Meserschmitt. The book also covers Germany's rotary-wing aircraft, gyro-kites used at sea by U-boats, experimental models, trainers, and guided and unguided missiles. Scale plans, specifications, and a generous selection of photographs and line drawings ensure that this book is one of the most complete reference works of its kind. 600 illustrations

416. HITLER'S ADMIRALS
G.H. Bennett and Roy Bennett, C,

At the end of World War II, British Naval Intelligence persuaded a number of German admirals held as prisoners-of-war to write essays setting out their thoughts on Germany’s build up to war, the early victories, and its eventual defeat. These essays languished in the British archives, unnoticed by researchers until a father-son team of naval historians recognized their value. Nine of the best are included in this book. Among the authors are the heads of the Kriegsmarine, surface fleet, and naval intelligence, chief of the naval war staff, flag officer of U-boats, senior liaison officer to the Italian Navy, commander of small battle units, senior naval officer in the Black Sea, and C-in-C West. The raw immediacy of their opinions sets them apart from memoirs written years after the event, when time for reflection, access to records, and consultation with colleagues often moderate views. Of particular interest are their views on the influence of Hitler and the Nazi leadership on the war at sea, the changing technology of naval warfare, and the sharp differences of opinion on how victory might have been won. The admirals’ opinions have been left exactly as they were expressed in 1945–46. For today’s readers the Bennetts have placed the comments within the chronology of the war and clarified references. The book is arranged by themes, from the time of the Weimar Republic to the surrender, to allow readers to compare and contrast the opinions held by admirals of different levels of seniority and with different spheres of responsibility. Their essays clearly indicate their intimate knowledge of every aspect of the war at sea and the decision-making processes that determined Germany’s conduct of the war at sea.

420. RAF HANDBOOK 1939 - 1945
David Wragg, C,O-

Formed on 1 April 1918 from the merger of the Royal Naval Air Service with the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force was the first fully autonomous military air arm in the world. This book is a comprehensive, single-source reference on the RAF and the vital part it played in the Second World War.
It opens with a brief history of the service, followed by a chapter that reviews its situation on the outbreak of war. The chapters that follow look at the structure of the RAF, from the Air Ministry and Chief of the Air Staff down to squadron level, to include each of the Commands, including Transport Command (a creation of the war years). The main aircraft types used are listed, as well as a full listing of squadrons and airfields in the British Isles. The training of personnel, and such matters as uniforms, rank insignia, medals and life on a typical airfield, are also covered. The main battles or campaigns in which the service was involved are also described.

421. . WEAPONS OF DESTRUCTION: GERMAN FROGMEN AND MIDGET SUBMARINES OF WWII
Lawrence Paterson, C,

As the Third Reich headed for destruction, German ingenuity in the naval field turned to unconventional weapons--midget submarines, radio-controlled explosive boats, and various forms of underwater sabotage—and the formation of small battle units known as Kleinkampfverbande. Utilizing an unusual range of devices, some barely beyond the experimental stage, and attacks regarded as little better than suicide missions, the organization was unique in drawing its personnel from the Navy, regular Army, and Waffen SS. Judged by their effect on the Allied advance, their successes were slight, but descriptions of their indomitable bravery make riveting reading. Pieced together from fragmentary sources, it is a largely untold story of some of the most desperate operations of the war.

422. ASSIGNMENT ALGIERS: WITH THE OSS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN THEATER
Erasmus Kloman, C,

Princeton grad Erasmus Kloman was undergoing Army training at Fort Bragg in 1943 when, due to his passing knowledge of French, he was interviewed for potential involvement in "a highly confidential activity." The interview culminated in the question, "Would you be willing to volunteer for hazardous duty behind enemy lines?" He signed up for duty with the newly formed Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and after an intensive period of training in various aspects of espionage, found himself on assignment in wartime Cairo, Algiers, and Caserta. At age twenty-four with the title of OSS Acting Chief of Operations in the Mediterranean Theater, he helped organize and coordinate the actions of Special Operations (SO) teams that infiltrated Italy and occupied-France on daring sabotage missions. The OSS teams cut and harassed enemy lines of communication, attacked vital enemy installations, organized and trained local resistance elements, and furnished intelligence to the Allied forces. The author's account of his experience coupled with his extensive research of declassified documents provides a fascinating inside view of the "shadow war" within the larger conflagration of World War II. Colorful imagery and photographs enliven a narrative that will appeal to everyone interested in true spy stories.

423. THE TUDOR NAVY: THE SHIPS, MEN AND ORGANISATION (Whoops, how did this get on here?)
Arthur Nelson, C,O,

Bridging the transition from the medieval to the modern worlds, the Tudor dynasty ruled England during a dynamic period of maritime and naval history--the time of the Mary Rose, the Spanish Armada, Sir Francis Drake, and the birth of British sea power. From the pre-Tudor navies dating back to Alfred the Great through the sixteenth-century reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the author provides a detailed record of naval activities involving English ships, organized by monarch and naval campaigns. In addition, the book portrays the individuals involved and the inner workings of the Tudor navy's organizational structure. Following the success of Conway's Nelson's Navy, The Tudor Navy presents a synthesis of diverse information to create a panoramic view of the English navy that will be a valuable reference for the enthusiast and a revelation to the general reader. 120 illustrations

424. SWIFT, SILENT, AND DEADLY: MARINE AMPHIBIOUS RECONNAISSANCE IN THE PACIFIC, 1942 - 1945
Bruce Meyers, C,

An experienced reconnaissance Marine officer, Bruce Meyers paints a colorful and accurate picture of the special recon landings that preceded every major amphibious operation in the Pacific War. Credited with saving countless lives, these Marine scouts went in stealthily at night from submarines, PT boats, Catalinas, and high-speed transports. Swift, silent, and deadly, they landed on more than two hundred enemy beaches, from Tarawa to Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa to collect intelligence on potential landing sites. They measured water depths, charted coral heads, gathered soil samples, sought out enemy locations, and took photographs. In short, they obtained information vital to the success of American operations in the Pacific. This book represents the first time World War II Marine recon landings have been chronicled. Meyers explains that only the story of their contributions in later wars has been previously documented. His book describes the start of it all, letting readers join the men as they slip over the sides of their rubber boats and make their way inland. Only now can the public appreciate the accomplishments of these daring and intrepid Marines.

425. HUNTER-KILLER: U.S. ESCORT CARRIERS IN THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
William Y'Blood, S,

The pursuit of German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic has long been considered one of the most exciting stories of World War II. This definitive study takes readers into the cockpits and onto the flight decks of the versatile and hardy U.S. escort carriers (CVEs) to tell of their vital, yet little-known contribution to the anti-U-boat campaign. Sailing apart from the Allied convoys, the CVE captains had complete freedom of action and frequently took their ships on "hunt and kill" missions against the enemy. The German submarines were allowed no respite and no place to relax without the fear of discovery. World War II historian William Y'Blood explains that in the eighteen months between the spring of 1943, when the escort carriers began to prowl the Atlantic, to November 1944, the average number of U-boats in daily operation was reduced from 108 to a mere 31. Though land-based aircraft, various support groups, and the convoy system itself helped win the Battle of the Atlantic, the escort carrier groups' influence was profound. In addition to documenting the escort carriers' exciting operational history, the author also traces the CVE's development and construction and examines its tactical and strategic uses.

Peter Sasgen, S,

The USS Rasher had an extraordinary record in World War II: she sank 18 enemy ships and destroyed 99,901 tons--the second highest tonnage of the war. Her fifth war patrol is the stuff of legends. In August 1944 during a single night surface attack on a Japanese convoy off the Philippines, she sank the escort carrier Taiyo and three marus, and later during that same patrol she sank another ship. Reading more like a novel than an operational history, this book covers all aspects of the Rasher's combat history in a way that both the general reader and veteran submariner will appreciate.

427. SUBCHASER
Edward Stafford, S,

In a wartime Navy of giant carriers and battleships, tiny wooden subchasers did not command much attention. Yet these 110-foot warships, manned mostly by inexperienced reservists, performed vital chores for the fleet everywhere there was action in World War II. They led landing craft right up to the assault beaches, protected them from fire, fought off air attacks, swept for mines, laid down smoke screens, and patrolled the sea for killer submarines. One such doughty little ship, subchaser 692, is the subject of this book. Told by 692's commanding officer Ed Stafford, then a twenty-four-year-old lieutenant (jg) on his first warship, the story follows the thirty-man crew as they scrapped their way through the war, including action during the July 1943 invasion of Sicily. Filled with humor, tension, poignancy, and moments of high drama, this volume leaves today's readers with a vivid image of life on a very small ship in a very big war.

428. BEACHHEAD ASSAULT: THE STORY OF THE ROYAL NAVAL COMMANDOS IN WWII
Daivd Lee, S,

The Royal Navy commandos had one of the most dangerous and important missions of World War II: they were the first onto the invasion beaches and the last to leave. Formed in 1941 as the Royal Naval Beach Parties, they participated in the Dieppe raid, where many lost their lives. Organized under officers designated as Beachmasters, they became full-fledged fighting commandos--with their now legendary Fairbairn Sykes commando knives—and led the way on the beaches as part of the Allied landings in Madagascar, Pantelleria, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Arakan, D-day, Elba, Walcheren, and more. Although their work on the beaches had been crucial to the Allied success, after the war they were disbanded and forgotten. With this book, their remarkable story is finally told through the personal accounts of the commandos themselves.

429. SILENT HUNTERS: GERMAN U-BOAT COMMANDERS OF WWII
Theordore Savas, S,

When World War II erupted across Europe in 1939, Germany knew it could not hope to compete with the Royal Navy in a head-to-head naval war. Left with no viable alternatives, the U-Bootwaffe wagered everything on the submarine in a desperate attempt to sink more tonnage than the Allies could construct. Some of these silent hunters who slipped out of their shelters along Europe's shores to stalk their prey have enjoyed considerable recognition in the years since. While most aspects of the bitter struggle have been told and retold from both the Axis and Allied points of view, the careers of some highly effective U-boat commanders have languished in undeserved obscurity. The profiles of six such commanders are presented in this collection of essays. They include Englebert Endrass, whose spectacular career before being lost off the coast of Gibraltar is described by his best friend and fellow ace Enrich Topp; Karl-Friedrich Merten, who was ranked among the war's top tonnage aces; Ralph Kapitsky, whose U-615 suicidal surface-to-air battle in the Caribbean allowed many of his fellow submariners to escape into the Atlantic; Fritz Guggenberger, who sank an aircraft carrier and organized the biggest POW escape attempt in American history; Victor Oehrn, a former staff officer of Karl Dönitz's; and Heinz Eck, who was executed by the British.

430. HITLER'S DEATH: RUSSIA'S LAST GREAT SECRET FROM THE FILES OF THE KGB
V.K, Vinogradow, C,

At last one of the greatest mysteries of the Second World War has been solved. Since historian Hugh Trevor-Roper made his name with the publication of Hitler’s Last Days, it has been accepted that the Nazi leader killed himself as Allied troops closed in. Many have suspected that the story was incomplete; now, with the help of previously unpublished documents from the KGB archives, one of the last great secrets of World War II can be revealed. With testimony from Germans and Russians who participated in the battle for the Reichstag and evidence from those sent to arrest the Führer, Hitler’s Death pieces together the astonishing truth of the final days of Nazism. Surrounded by secrecy, this book also includes a detailed examination of the complete diaries of Martin Bormann and graphic new evidence from Hitler’s inner circle. This revelatory work provides a unique insight into the death throes of the Third Reich and is guaranteed to cause controversy.

431. HITLER'S SPY CHIEF: THE WILHELM CANARIS STORY
Richard Bassett, C,

Wilhelm Canaris was appointed by Hitler to head the Abwehr (the German secret service) eighteen months after the Nazis came to power. But Canaris turned against the Fuhrer and the Nazi regime, believing that Hitler would start a war Germany could not win. In 1938 he was involved in an attempted coup, undermined by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. In 1940 he sabotaged the German plan to invade England, and fed General Franco vital information that helped him keep Spain out of the war. For years he played a dangerous double game, desperately trying to keep one step ahead of the Gestapo. The SS chief, Heinrich Himmler became suspicious of the Abwehr and by 1944, when Abwehr personnel were involved in the attempted assassination of Hitler, he had the evidence to arrest Canaris himself. Canaris was executed a few weeks before the end of the war. Canaris himself emerges from these pages as a remarkable man, unassuming and modest, but with an iron will, great courage and a subtle intelligence, who thought that the dirty work of spying became less sordid if conducted by gentlemen.

433. BLACK CROSS/RED STAR THE AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT, VOLUME 3: EVERYTHING FOR STALINGRAD
Christer Bergstrom, C,O,

Never before has the history of the air war on the Eastern Front been written in such depth, in such detail, and so carefully balanced between both sides. The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, has been subtitled Everything for Stalingrad and covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. Similar to Volume 2, Volume 3 will contain a large number of photos and 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles, by one of the best aircraft profile artists in the world--Claes Sundin.

VOLUME ONE: JUNE 1943 - SEPTEMBER 1944
VOLUME TWO: SEPTEMBER 1944 - MAY 1945
Jaen-Yves Lorant & Richard Goyat, C,O,

The Wilde Sau Geschwader JG 300 played a key role in the aerial defense of the Reich during the last two years of WWII but has never before been the subject of a serious and detailed study until now. This work thus fills a major void in the history of the war in the air. This chronicle has been assembled with the participation of more than 130 veterans and their families, traced and interviewed in the course of more than twenty years research. It sheds new light on flying operations and aerial combat as experienced by German fighter pilots in the battles that took place over Germany. Interspersed with numerous vivid personal accounts, it is a work that has a uniquely human and personal dimension. The authors have undertaken an in-depth comparative study of German, British and American primary sources and archival records, with the chief aim of minimizing errors and inaccuracies and ruling out dubious information. Far from seeking the 'glorify' German or Allied aviators, they have reconstructed as accurately as possible the fates of the actors in this immense human drama and pay them due tribute. This history of JG 300 also deals with those aspects of the air war often neglected in the specialist literature such as the daily routines of the ground personnel and the navigation methods practiced by single seat fighters. Included are comprehensive loss and victory listings, and more than 800 photographs in the two volumes collected from private sources. Over 40 color profiles and paintings by Thomas A. Tullis and Richard Goyat are planned.

Here is the complete story of Graf and Grislawski, two of the most skillful and colorful Luftwaffe fighter pilots during WWII. This book has been written in cooperation with Mr. Alfred Grislawksi, with profile artist Claes Sundin contributing 26 unique profiles of aircraft flown by both aces. There are more than 300 photos, most unpublished. Graf spent many years in Soviet captivity. Much has been said and written about Graf's alleged cooperation with the Soviets. Here this is analyzed in detail. The authors have access to extensive material from Russian POW archives which includes Hermann Graf's entire POW file that has been hidden in a Russian archive until recovered by the authors. 436. KURSK THE VITAL 24 HOURS: THE GREAT TANK BATTLE AT PROKHOROVKA, 12 JULY 1943
Will Fowler, C,O,

On the 5th July 1943, the German army launched Operation Citadel. Attacking with a force of 3000 tanks and assault guns, the Germans faced a well-dug in force of more than 3900 Soviet tanks, with another 1500 tanks in reserve. The tanks advanced with as many as 50 packed together per kilometre of line. What followed was the largest tank battle the world has ever seen, with heavy casualties on both sides in this titanic clash of arms. On the 11th July, three SS divisions - Totenkopf, Das Reich and Liebstandarte - attempted to break through the Soviet lines at the village of Prokhorovka and so unhinge the Soviet defensive position. Facing them were newly deployed Fifth Guards Tanks Army. The battle raged all day, with German attack followed by Soviet counterattack. By nightfall the Germans had lost more than 300 tanks and the Fifth Guards Tanks Army 50 percent of their strength. Despite the heavy losses, the Soviet defenders had achieved their aim: the German attack had been halted and the initiative lost. With first-hand accounts from both sides, vivid photographs, and specially commissioned maps of the combat zones, Kursk: The Vital 24 Hours is a comprehensive examination of the decisive failure of the German's last large-scale offensive on the Eastern Front. ?

437. ONE SQUARE MILE OF HELL: THE BATTLE FOR TARAWA
John Wukovits, C,

It may be impossible to write a really dull book about the 1943 battle of Tarawa. In the assault on the island, the Second Marine Division lost a thousand dead, the Japanese garrison was annihilated, and the marines learned valuable lessons about amphibious weaponry and tactics that aided them in future campaigns. Wukovits avoids a straight narrative in favor of seeing the development of the battle through the eyes of selected survivors, whom he has interviewed intelligently and thoroughly. They were impressed, as readers may be, by the strength of the Japanese fortifications and the tenacity of their garrisons, who kept the whole island under fire for two of the battle's three days. Wukovits adds emotional punch with accounts of marines who did not survive but whose memories families have kept alive for 60 years. A worthwhile battle monograph for any Pacific theater or marine collection.

The book follows the action from the French beaches to the Vosges Mountains, where the first Allied penetration along the entire Western front reached the Rhine River. First to the Rhine covers the vicious fighting during the German Nordwind counteroffensive in January 1945 and the French-American offensive to clear the Colmar Pocket. It then pursues the forces of the Third Reich across the Rhine to their ultimate destruction. The book features little-known battles, including one at Montelimar, when an ad hoc American armored command and the 36th Infantry Division came within a hairs breadth and several days of hard fighting of cutting off the entire German 19th Army.

440. STALIN'S WARS: FROM WORLD WAR TO COLD WAR, 1939 - 1945
Geoffrey Roberts, C

This breakthrough book provides a detailed reconstruction of Stalin’s leadership from the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 to his death in 1953. Making use of a wealth of new material from Russian archives, Geoffrey Roberts challenges a long list of standard perceptions of Stalin: his qualities as a leader; his relationships with his own generals and with other great world leaders; his foreign policy; and his role in instigating the Cold War. While frankly exploring the full extent of Stalin’s brutalities and their impact on the Soviet people, Roberts also uncovers evidence leading to the stunning conclusion that Stalin was both the greatest military leader of the twentieth century and a remarkable politician who sought to avoid the Cold War and establish a long-term detente with the capitalist world. By means of an integrated military, political, and diplomatic narrative, the author draws a sustained and compelling personal portrait of the Soviet leader. The resulting picture is fascinating and contradictory, and it will inevitably change the way we understand Stalin and his place in history. Roberts depicts a despot who helped save the world for democracy, a personal charmer who disciplined mercilessly, a utopian ideologue who could be a practical realist, and a warlord who undertook the role of architect of post-war peace. 32 b/w illustrations,

443. ABSOLUTE WAR: SOVIET RUSSIA IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Chris Bellamy, C,

Bellamy outlines the lead-up to the war—in which the fragile alliance between Hitler and Stalin was unceremoniously broken—and takes us headlong into the hostilities. He presents a shocking picture of battle in which the traditional restraints of “civilized” warfare were shed. He makes clear how the Soviets quickly rallied against Hitler, choosing homegrown despotism over foreign domination in a struggle that the Russian people call the Great Patriotic War. Bellamy charts the early gains of the German army, whose advances into Soviet territory were brought to a halt in Moscow in the winter of 1941, and whose defeat was sealed in the Battle of Stalingrad, the most merciless campaign of the bloodiest front. He shows how Soviet men—and women—joined to fight a war whose casualties were later steeply underestimated by their government, and how even the true death toll, at 27 million, does not take into account the millions of lives on both sides that lay shattered in the aftermath. Finally, Bellamy examines the far-reaching consequences of the battle’s outcome—the reverberations of which are still felt today—and argues that the cost of victory was ultimately too much for the Soviet Union to bear.

384. U-BOOTE CREWS: DAILY LIFE, 1939 - 1945
Jean Delize, C,O

Much has been written about the German submarine arm during World War II, but what was really known about the men serving in these special "ships"?
This book, written by a specialist of naval history, evokes how the men were recruited and how they went through the long arduous training (this training regime started to collapse in 1941); it also covers the main training schools, the principles, tactics, team spirit and politics together with the long test periods for the submarine itself. Many other aspects are covered, such as the drive and spirit with which Admiral Doenitz inspired the men; the very direct and informal relations between the Admiral and his U-Boat commanders, the very strong bond between the commanders and their men; the different compartments and machines, the men at action stations, daily life aboard with all the inconveniences of this claustrophobic life with its various superstitions, its hygiene problems, pollution, food etc. Jean Delize is a Doctor of History, a teacher of History and Geography and a specialist of the French, British and German Navies of the first half of the 20th Century. The book is fully illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs and modern color artworks, color and b/w throughout, maps

385. REBUILDING THE ROYAL NAVY: WARSHIP DESIGN SINCE 1945
D.K. Brown, C,O

This fourth and final volume in this series on Royal Navy warship development presents an in-depth and lucid account of British warship construction in the challenging half-century since World War II. After considering the wartime legacy and lingering austerity, the authors cover some of the ambitious ideas for the bigger ships like the reconstruction of the carrier Victorious, and the conversion of fleet destroyers into anti-submarine frigates. But most of the book is devoted to new construction, with chapters on all the major categories and new information on designs that remained on the drawing board. It concludes with a survey of the most significant technological innovations and an analysis of the impact of the Falklands War. D.K. Brown's personal knowledge and experience and George Moore's in-depth research on declassified material add up to a crowning finale to an internationally acclaimed series. 200 illustrations and line drawings.

386. UNDER THE GUNS OF THE KAISER'S ACES: BOHME, MULLER, VON TUTSCHEK AND WOLFF, THE COMPLETE RECORD OF THEIR VICTORIES
Norman Franks and Hal Giblin, C,O-

Following their imaginative, popular and successful approach to identifying and describing all the airmen who were claimed by Manfred von Richthofen in Under the Guns of the Red Baron, and by Immelmann, Voss, Göring and Lothar von Richthofen in Under the Guns of the German Aces, air historians Franks and Giblin have put four more equally distinguished German aces of World War One under the microscope. In doing so, they profile not only the aces themselves, all of whom received the 'Blue Max' - Germany's highest award for bravery in action - but also the Allied airmen they fought and downed. By extensive and exhaustive research into records, and carefully studying maps, timings and intelligence reports - contemporary and retrospective - as full a picture as possible is revealed with excellent photographic coverage of the many protagonists involved. All four of the aces, Böhme, Müller, von Tutschek and Wolff were unit leaders at different times, one commanded a Jagdesgeschwader, the others commanded Jagdstaffels. All four were destined to die in actions against the Royal Flying Corps. Every one of their combats is detailed here, with colour artwork. This is the last in the 'Under the Guns' trilogy, to complete the set. over 100 photos and line art, maps

387. LUFTWAFFE OVER AMERICA: THE SECRET PLANS TO BOMB THE UNITED STATES IN WWII
Manfred Griehl, C,

The plans that Nazi Germany had to raid--and bomb--New York and the eastern seaboard are revealed in this book. They were based on the use of transoceanic aircraft planes, such as the six-engine JU 390, ME 264, or TA 400, but the Third Reich was unable to produce such machines in sufficient numbers. If the Soviet Union had been conquered, however, these plans would have become a reality. With the seizure of vital resources from the Soviet Union, the Wehrmacht would have had enough fuel and material to mass-produce giant bomber aircraft. The collapse of the Wehrmacht infrastructure and the end of the Thousand-Year Reich ensured that plans for long-range remote-controlled missiles never got off the drawing board and were never manufactured. Manfried Griehl makes it clear that until the collapse, numerous secret research laboratories seemed to have worked in parallel seeking nuclear power and explosives. Only classified material held within British, French, and American archives can prove whether these groups were close to perfecting small atomic explosives. But, without a shadow of doubt, Germany was far more technologically advanced by the end of 1944 than has been previously suspected. The book includes numerous excellent photos and diagrams.

388. HITLER'S GREY WOLVES: U-BOATS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN
Lawrence Paterson, C,

Next to nothing has been written about the U-Boat war in the Indian Ocean. This is the story of a forgotten campaign. The battle began in August 1943, when a German submarine arrived in the Malaysian harbour of Georgetown. In total, nearly 40 U-Boats were assigned to penetrate the Indian Ocean, serving alongside troops of the occupying Imperial Japanese Forces. The Japanese allowed U-Boats to use Malaysia as an operational station. From that base, they mixed with Japanese forces on a hitherto unseen scale: a move which spread the U-Boat War throughout the vast Indian Ocean and into the Pacific. This theatre of war held a real chance to swing the tide of battle in North Africa in favour of Rommel, but the Germans essentially did little too late. The joint action also gave U-Boats the opportunity to penetrate the Pacific Ocean for the first time, attacking shipping off the Australian coast and hunting off New Zealand. Plans were even afoot for an assault on American supply lines. The 'cooperation' also brought into stark relief the fundamental differences of German and Japanese war aims. Eventually joined by the crews of Italian supply submarines, relations between the fighting men of the three main Axis powers were often brutal and almost constantly turbulent. Stories of U-Boats laden with gold and treasure stem almost exlusively from boats destined to and from Japanese-controlled Malaysia, laden with material exchanged between the two major partners of the Triple Axis Alliance.

389. UGLY DUCKLINGS: JAPAN'S LIBERTY SHIP EQUIVALENTS OF WWII
S.C. Heal, C,

This book details Japan's feverish effort to build a large fleet of so-called Standard Ships to counter the severe losses sustained by her merchant fleet in the Pacific War. The Emergency Standard Ship came at a time when expedience took precedence over good construction standards. Considered the equivalent of the Liberty Ships, the Type-A Standard Ship is the focus of this book with the author describing the Zaibatsu business conglomerate that produced them and then telling how they were able to function with a remarkable degree of reliability in spite of their stripped-down design. Includes detailed appendixes of Type-S fleet and other types of Japanese merchants of that era.
