John Vasco, S,O,
The Luftwaffe Zerstorer units, equipped with the twin-engined Me 110, were first used to great effect in the escort and air superiority roles against the Polish Air Force in 1939. Later these units took part in the occupation of Norway and Denmark and during the Blitzkrieg against the west in 1940, when their numbers were expanded with the addition of new units. Considered by Goring to be amongst the elite of the Luftwaffe, the Zerstorer were deployed in the Battle of Britain, in the Balkans, North Africa and in the East where Zerstorergruppen accounted for significant numbers of Russian aircraft destroyed on the ground and in the air. This is the first of two volumes covering the history of the Zerstorer squadrons between 1939 and 1945. Each volume adopts the traditional Classic approach of a detailed narrative matched with a comprehensive selection of photos, many previously unpublished and specially prepared colour artworks.

MESSERSCHMITT ME262 VOL 2
J Richard Smith & Eddie J Creek, C,O,
In this, the second volume of their unprecedented study of the Messerschmitt Me
262, internationally renowned authors J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek have
drawn more than thirty years of unrivalled research to continue the story of the
world's first operational military jet aircraft.
This book examines the impact the Me 262 made upon the course of the European
air war following its operational debut with Erprobungskommando 262 in the
summer of 1944. This extraordinary new aircraft was a vital element to a
possible revival of Nazi Germany's flagging war effort for as Hitler told his
generals before the Normandy Invasion: "Every month that passes makes it more
probable that we will get at least one Gruppe of jet aircraft. The most
important thing is that the enemy get some bombs on top of them as they try to
invade... If we can pin them on the beaches for just six to eight hours, you can
see what that will mean to us..." Indeed as one senior Allied air commander
warned in June, 1944: "German jets could wash away our air superiority tomorrow
and give the Luftwaffe an immense advantage..." Using the frank and concise
personal reports of Messerschmitt's front-line inspectors, as well as combat
reports and other eye-witness accounts, the authors reveal the later tactical
successes and failures of the aircraft as it was deployed in both the fighter
role with Kommando Nowotny and in the bomber role with Kommando Schenk and KG 51
over the western front in the autumn of 1944. Also included is an in-depth look
at the array of ingenious and formidable weapons systems designed for the
aircraft as well as detailed descriptions of the projected rocket-powered
interceptor, BMW-engined and heavily armed and armoured variants. Illustrations:

144. SANGER: GERMANY'S ORBITAL ROCKET BOMBER IN WWII
David Myhra, C,O,
Eugen Sanger's proposed manned, bi-fuel, liquid rocket-powered orbital bomber was truly mid-1940s high tech. Sanger
proposed a flying machine capable of dropping a 2,000 pound bomb on American east coast cities of New York and
Washington, D.C., as well as Chicago and Pittsburgh. Sanger's orbital bomber would have been launched from a monorail
track 1.8 miles long, and pushed to 1,113 miles/hour via captive V2 rocket engines. The Sanger bomber would lift off its
monorail and would immediately go into a 30 degree climb. Seven to eight minutes later, it would have reached 80 miles
altitude with a forward speed of 13,000 miles per hour. As the separated weapon glided away and down toward New York City,
the Sanger machine itself was passing high over the city returning home to Germany across the Atlantic. The world's first
intercontinental bomber project, the Sanger orbital bomber's total flight time was expected
to be no more than two hours. The
complete story is told here for the first time. Over 575 b/w and color photographs,

146. MESSERSCHMITT BF 110 BOMBSIGHTS OVER ENGLAND: ERPROBUNGSGRUPPE 210 IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
John Vasco, C,O
The actions of Erpronbungsgruppe 210 over southern England during the bitter fighting of the summer of 1940 is recorded here in depth. Formed on July 1, 1940 it was given the take of operationally testing the standard fighters on charge with the Luftwaffe in new and different roles. Their main role was the use of the Me 109 and 110 as fighter bombers, lacking both the level
flight of the conventional bomber and the steep dive of the Stuka. The mode of attack was teh shallow dive, using only the standard 'Revi' gunsight as a 'bombsight' to line-up the target. They were also the only unit in 1940 to operate the Messerschmitt Bf 110C-6, the version that carried a 30 mm. MG 101 Kanone in place of the standard 2x20 mm. Kanone. Information is provided here on 'Seilbomben', a weapon which the unit would have used to blackout the electricity
network in the southeast of England had an invasion taken place in 1940. In filling a significant gap concerning Luftwaffe fighter-bomber raids over England during the Battle of Britain, and correcting the still-frequent inaccuracies which are to be seen in other written works concerning the unit, this book will appeal to wide audiences, over 280 b/w photos, color aircraft profiles, huge oversize book.

Horten brothers biographer David Myhra continues his efforts for a full accounting of the events surrounding the design, construction, and flight testing of the twin turbojet powered all-wing prototype Horten Ho 9 fighter/interceptor and its serial production prototype the Horten Ho 229V3. Throughout the 1980's Myhra located and interviewed numerous former Horten Flugzeugbau members seeking to better understand how the Horten Ho IX came to be - its construction delays, flight testing, and the loss of test
pilot Erwin Ziller in December 1944. Word for word interviews make up this volume and often the details given by one former worker differs from another leading to more questions than answers, over 250 b/w photos and line drawings.

160. GERMAN AIRCRAFT IN RUSSIAN AND SOVIET SERVICE, 1914 - 1951, TWO VOLUMES
Andrei Alexandrov and Genadi Petrov, C,O,
These two books, illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, depict the blooming period of the Soviet
aviation industry, which owed a great deal of its knowledge to technology derived from German designs. This cooperation continued until the beginning of the 1940's. The effects of German-Soviet cooperation
continued to be felt until 1951, however. The extent to which German research and development had influenced
aviation worldwide first became apparent to aviation historians in the 1960's, however their research was concentrated exclusively on the period of the WWII and the immediate post-war years. In the period before and during WWI, the influence of German
aviation developments was felt more in Russia and the Soviet Union than anywhere else. From
the very beginning there was an interest in acquiring German know-how, which resulted in early ties with the German aviation industry.

161. FLAK: GERMAN ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENSES, 1914-1945,
Edward Westermann, C,
the author makes a convincing case for the significant contributions made by the entire range of German anti-aircraft
defneses. Flak units have virtually
been ignored, despite the fact that they employed more than a million men and women, were responsible for more than half of all Allied aircraft losses,
forced Allied bombers to fly far above high-accuracy altitudes, and thus allowed Germany to hold out far longer than it might have otherwise. This
definitive study sheds new light on every facet of the development and organization of this vital defense arm, including its artillery, radar,
searchlight, barrage balloon, decoy sites, and command components. Highlighting the convergence of technology,
stratey, doctrine, politics, and economics, Flak also provides revealing insights into German strategic thought, and the lives of members of the flak units themselves, including a
large number of women, factory workers and even POW's who particpated, 25 phots, highly recommended,

181. HEINKEL HE 177, 277, 274
Manfried Griehl, C,O,
The story of the evolution of Heinkel's heavyweight is one of genius, disaster
and despair. The He177 was conceived as a long-range heavy dive bomber, a sort of big Stuka and it was hoped to become one of the pillars of the Luftwaffe's armament. Very similar in style and content as the above book and again comes highly
reccomended.

189. HELICOPTERS OF THE THIRD REICH
Steven Coates, C,O,
This book represents the first comprehensive attempt to related the development of autogyros
and helicopters in German during the period off 1930-1945 and seeks to shed light on a long and unjustly neglected area of considerable aeronautical achievement. Despite minimal funding,
lukewarm official support and bitter inter-service rivalries, the Germans were technologically ahead of their American counterparts in the
development of rotating-wing aircraft. Following years of research, the author has uncovered the story of the development and usage of German helicopters from the pre-war years to their subsequent deployment in the Luftwaffe as mountain warfare support machines and as an aid to the
U-boats. This book can probably be considered as the definitive history of the subject. It will prove a fascinating read to anyone interested in the history of helicopter development and of a very little known portion of the German aviation industry during the second
World War. The book is printed on quality paper, the result of which is that the more than 350 photographs appear crisp and sharp. large oversize book.

190. GERMAN SECRET FLIGHT TEST CENTERS TO 1945
H. Beauvais, etc. C,O,
This is a major piece of research by a group of German authors, some of whom
were involved at the same time, into the establishment and activities of government flight-test
centers in Germany from the 1920's to the end of WWII. The authors begin with the secret testing in cooperation with the Red Army in the 1920s/30s. The book addresses the major locations where testing was conducted, including
Johannisthal, Lipetsk, Rechlin, Travemunde, Tarnewitz and Peenemunde-West, and other less well known locations. The book draws on an extensive collection of photographs and documents,
many taken from previously unpublished sources. There are also comprehensive listings of the aircraft used, with such details as
Werknummern, markings and engines. There are similarly detailed lists of personnel and the various research and test units. This book is a remarkable piece of work, and the details on experimental aircraft produced and tested is
magnificent. Includes 270 b/w photos, sketches and 8 pages of color.

191. KG 200 GEHEIM GESCHWADER
Geoffrey Thomas, C,O,
shrouded in secrecy and intrigue during its lifetime and myth and legend since its dissolution, the KG 200 still remains for many one of the most fascinating units of the Luftwaffe. Delivering spies while flying captured Allied aircraft, clandestine reconnaissance missions over land and sea, testing new weapons such as
the 'Mistel' composite bomber and the piloted V-1 and extremely long-range liaison flights were just some of their tasks. But there was also a more sinister aspect to their operations: men from KG 200 played a significant part in
the notorious action against the French Resistance on the Vercors plateau, others were involved in what were effectively suicide missions. Thomas's deeply researched text throws new light on all aspects of this unit, dispels a number of myths and shows that despite its 'special' status, KG 200 was just as much a prey to the German hierarchy's power politics as every other branch of the
Wehrmacht, with results that were often tragic but frequently farcical. Includes 200
b/w photos, and 16 pages of color,

192. GERMAN AIR FORCE OPERATIONS IN SUPPORT OF THE ARMY
General der Flieger a. D. Paul Deichmann, C,O,
This is a reprint of a monograph written after the war by a former Luftwaffe General for the USAAF. This very detailed work begins with a
brief discussion of WWI and post war and the practical implementation of
organizational, methodological and training theory. Most of the book covers such diverse topics as air reconnaissance operations including types, planning, tactics, execution, processing and interpretations of air photos and much more. Actual operations include air defense of the army, supply, types and scope of air support, interdiction of the battlefield and direct air support for the Army. Then follows a discussion of the ratio of army support to overall air operations for the Polish Campaign, the Campaign in the West, the Balkan Campaign and Russia. Excellent study. Wolfgang Falck and Jerry Crandall, C,O,
Falck's autobiography the describes behind the scene views of life in the leadership of Germany's WWII air force, successes, operations, and failures. Because of his leadership capabilities and knowledge of military tactics plus that fact that he was a very capable
figther pilot, Falck was selected to create the German night fighter force. Falck also explicitly describes the desperation of the final days of the war and his immediate post war survival. This oversize book features 250 photos and 4 color profiles.

196. DORNIER DO 335 AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
Karl-Heinz Regnat, C,O,
This is the first comprehensive, well-illustrated documentation on the Do 335, one of the milestones in German aviation history. The Do 335 was developed by Dornier as a heavy fighter in 1943. One of the last high-performance piston-engined aircraft designed,
the Do 335 was powered by tandem fore-aft engines, a concept proven in numerous Dornier flying boats. As a result of this configuration, drag was reduced to little more than that of a single-engined aircraft, enabling
the Do 335 to achieve very high speeds. The do 335 represented the apex of
propeller-driven aircraft in WWII. Features over 240 b/w and color photographs, drawings, and charts.
Includes lots of technical data and illustrations also, I would say this book is equally technical and illustrative with also significant text. Don't let the titles mislead, though there are many great photos, this is not just a photo book, far from it.

197. FOCKE-WULF 187 AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
Dietmar Hermann, C,O,
The twin engined Focke-Wulf Fw 187 was a contemporary of the Messerschmitt Bf 110, however production was limited to a handful of prototypes. So far the story of this largely forgotten fighter has been shrouded in darkness. Developed by Kurt Tank, the Fw 187 first flew in the
summer of 1937. Not only was it faster than any other German fighter with similar engines, it was also earmarked for record attempts which had to be
abandoned with the outbreak of war. the debacle of the Me 210, which was supposed to succeed the Bf 110, revived the Fw 187's fortunes. With a speed of 799 km/h, it was faster than any contemporary fighter and was considered as a replacement for the Me 210. Once again, however, no production contract was forthcoming. The few Fw 187's built served in industry defense and were later operated by the Vaerlose Aerial Gunnery School. This little-known aircraft is documented with numerous photographs and drawings, many of them unpublished. Features over 200 b/w and color photographs, drawings, and charts.
Includes lots of technical data and illustrations also, I would say this book is equally technical and illustrative with also significant text. Don't let the titles mislead, though there are many great photos, this is not just a photo book, far from it.

198. FOCKE-WULF FW 190 "LONG NOSE": AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE FW 190D SERIES
Dietmar Hermann, C,O,
This book covers the complete development history of those variants of the Focke-Wulf
Fw 190 powered by inline engines. The first Fw 190 equipped with a Daimler Benz liquid-cooled engine took to the air in early 1942, followed by six months later by another powered by a Jumo 214. Not until 1944 did the Fw 190 D-9 powered by the Jumo 213 A, enter production. The
Fw 190 D-9 proved an immediate success, and quickly entered service with the Luftwaffe and more than 1,700 examples were completed by the end of the war. The Fw 190 D-9 gave rise to a number of
improved variants with the more powerful Jumo 213 F engine and a heavier armament, however only a handful of the D-11 and D-13 version were completed. With a maximum speed of 750 km/h, the Fw 190 D-12 powered the new
Jumo 213 EB would have represented the apex of Fw 190 development. The proposed Fw 190 D-14 and D-15, both powered by
improved versions of the dive-bombers 603, came too late to see service, with over 150 b/w drawings, charts, photos, and color aircraft profiles, excellent photo/technical
history.

203. DRAGONFLY: THE LUFTWAFFE'S EXPERIMENTAL TRIEBFLUGELJAGER PROJECT
David Myhra, S,O,
This is the story of the world's first attempt at perfecting a true, tail-sitting vertical take off and landing (VTOL) interceptor flying machine. The Trieblugeljager was not intended to be an air-superiority dogfighter, but a bomber
killer rising straight up from its hiding place in the forest or urban area to meet and attack Allied bombers head on. With its mission completed it would return to its hiding place on the forest floor and wait to rise again. The Triebflugeljager would have
been a point-defense interceptor intended for the Luftwaffe home defense squadrons and its most important virtue was that it would not need a runway. Highly unusual, then as
well as today, the Triebflugeljager was an amazing prototype, over 240 b/w and color photographs and line
drawings.

This book describes teh interwoven fates of these two Luftwaffe fighter aces on the Eastern Front 1941 - 1943 and 1944 - 1945. This book has been written in cooperation with Mr. Alfred Grislawksi, with profile artist Claes Sundin contributing 26 unique profiles of aircraft flown by both aces. There are more than 300 photos, most unpublished. Graf spent many years in Soviet captivity. Much has been said and written about
Graf's alleged cooperation with the Soviets. Here this is analyzed in detail. The authors have access to extensive material from Russian POW archives which includes Hermann Graf's entire POW file that has been hidden in a Russian archive until recovered by the authors. This book is beautifully produced, worth every cent of the price of admission. By the same authors as the acclaimed Black Cross/Red Star series.

*ME 262 SCHWALBE 2 VOLUMES
Seweryn Fleischer, S,O
This is a fantastic set. Along with fantastic photos, there is a very in-depth text that provides a definitive developmental history that really gives an exhaustive treatment, especially for the detail nuts. Also provides an operational history, chapters on markings, complete prodution details, it's use by other countries post-war, and so much more. There is an excellent table listing all damaged or destroyed Me262 Schwalbe's, the date, pilot and unit when known. There are also large separate foldouts of technical line drawings as well as other line drawings in the book and lots of color showing colors and markings as well as some color photos of surviving aircraft. Overall I wouldn't call these photo books as there really is quite a bit of text, which happens to be very tiny. Printed on deluxe glossy paper and entirely in English, and very nicely priced.

230. THE LENT PAPERS
Helmut Lint, C,O-
Helmut Lent was one of the outstanding personalities of the Luftwaffe during the Second World War and, until his death in October 1944, the leading exponent of night fighter tactics. Lent originally served with a Zerstörer (Destroyer) unit, I./ZG 76, and flew in Poland where he achieved his first victory on September 2, 1939. From this date until he joined the newly appointed NachtJagd (Night Fighter) he scored another seven victories, five of these during the Narvik campaign. Lent's initial induction into the original night-fighter Geschwader, NJG 1, was not a success and within a short time he made a request to be transferred to day fighter operations. However, Wolfgang Falck, the founder of the Geschwader and a friend of Lent, persuaded him to give it another month before submitting his request for a transfer. The 'breathing space' had its effect and Lent scored his first night victory on May 12, 1941, and by January 1943 his 50th. On August 1, 1943, he became Kommodore of the newly formed NJG 3 that soon, with the help of his devoted followers, became extremely successful in combating the ever-increasing night bombing operations made by the RAF. On the night of June 15/16, 1944, he shot down three Lancaster bombers taking his victory score to 100 and became the first night fighter recipient of the Brillanten (Diamonds) to the Knight's Cross. During a daylight landing on October 5, 1944, at Paderborn, where he was visiting Achim Jabs, the Kommodore of NJG 1, Lent's Bf 110 came into contact with a high-tension line and crashed into the ground. Lent was critically injured and died two days later.

236. TARGET AMERICA: HITLER'S PLAN TO ATTACK THE UNITED STATES
James Duffy, C
Did Hitler mean to pursue global conquest once he had completed his mastery of Europe? In this startling reassessment of Hitler's strategic aims, Duffy argues that he fully intended to bring the war to America once his ambitions in the Eurasian heartland were achieved. Detailed here for the first time are the Third Reich's plans for a projected series of worldwide offensives using the new secret weapons emerging from wartime research. Duffy also recounts other Axis schemes to attack American cities through the use of multi-stage missiles, submarine launched rockets, and suicide missions against ships in the New York harbor. Taken together, these plans reveal just how determined the Axis powers were to attack the United States. Illustrated with photos, line drawings and maps.

239. JAGDGESCHWADER 301/302 "WILDE SAU
Willi Reschke, C
Jagdgeschwader 301 and 302 were established in 1943. Their mission was to intercept enemy bombers at night flying fast single-engined fighters. But they also had to engage Allied bombers by day. The pilots of these new fighter wings were a mix of former bomber pilots and trained fighter pilots – a unique composition for the Luftwaffe. Night missions required good instrument training, like that given to bomber pilots. The fighter pilots were more familiar with the available aircraft and combat tactics. A former fighter pilot himself, Willi Reschke describes the difficulties of crossing over from day to night fighting and vice-versa. He describes the difficult missions flown by JG 301/JG 302 and the fates of their pilots, providing the first chronicle of the “Wilde Sau” Geschwader.

240. LUFTWAFFE OVER AMERICA: THE SECRET PLANS TO BOMB THE UNITED STATES IN WWII
Manfred Griehl, C,
The plans that Nazi Germany had to raid--and bomb--New York and the eastern seaboard are revealed in this book. They were based on the use of transoceanic aircraft planes, such as the six-engine JU 390, ME 264, or TA 400, but the Third Reich was unable to produce such machines in sufficient numbers. If the Soviet Union had been conquered, however, these plans would have become a reality. With the seizure of vital resources from the Soviet Union, the Wehrmacht would have had enough fuel and material to mass-produce giant bomber aircraft. The collapse of the Wehrmacht infrastructure and the end of the Thousand-Year Reich ensured that plans for long-range remote-controlled missiles never got off the drawing board and were never manufactured. Manfried Griehl makes it clear that until the collapse, numerous secret research laboratories seemed to have worked in parallel seeking nuclear power and explosives. Only classified material held within British, French, and American archives can prove whether these groups were close to perfecting small atomic explosives. But, without a shadow of doubt, Germany was far more technologically advanced by the end of 1944 than has been previously suspected. The book includes numerous excellent photos and diagrams.

241. THE FOCKE-WULF Fw 190 IN NORTH AFRICA
Morten Jessen & Andrew Arthy, C,O,
The Focke-Wulf 190 was already a feared opponent on the Channel Front when in appeared in North Africa in November 1942 and though perceived by many to have been the fighter ‘workhorse’ of the Luftwaffe on the Western and Eastern Fronts during World War 2, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 also served in unit strength in North Africa from late 1942 until the German collapse in May 1943. This new book is a day-to-day account of the air war over Tunisia and Algeria told through war diaries and first-hand accounts from both the German and allied pilots who flew in the theatre. Included are appendices with complete loss and victory lists, camouflage and markings of Fw 190s in North Africa, and Fw 190s captured in Tunisia. After three years of in-depth research the story of the pilots and units that flew the Fw 190 in North Africa can now be told. Using over 100 photographs, many from private collections, plus illustrations and profiles, the authors describe the interesting story of the air war fought over Tunisia and Algeria from the view of the Fw 190 pilots. LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER ACE
Norbert Hannig, C,
Herr Norbert Hannig’s wartime career makes for fascinating and highly informative reading on an aspect of the 1939-45 air war not often covered in the English language; primarily that of the campaign against the Soviet Union. He was one of the midwar-generation Luftwaffe fighter pilots and began operations with JG 54 on the eastern (Leningrad) front in early 1943; initially flying Messerschmitt Bf 109s before transitioning to the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. He became a Staffel CO and was credited with 42 victories, also serving with JV 44 (whose CO was Adolf Galland); he then returned to Germany towards the closing stages of the war to convert to Me 262 jet fighters. Many and varied were his experiences in action against the rejuvenated Soviet Air Force in the east, and the powerful western Allies over the homeland during the final chaotic months of hostilities, which culminated in his captivity. John Weal’s skilful translation ensures that the fluid and descriptive style of the author is preserved. Thankfully, also, Norbert was a keen photographer who shot a profusion of images, all previously unpublished, many of which appear in this important book. 20 pages of photos.

246. LUFTWAFFE AERIAL TORPEDO AIRCRAFT AND OPERATIONS IN WWII
Harold Thiele, S,O,
This fascinating book offers a rare account into the operations of the Luftwaffe’s aerial torpedo units during the Second World War. Often overlooked, the crews who flew in these units were highly-trained and experienced and their missions involved hazardous flying against difficult and well-defended maritime targets. Harold Thiele has researched this field for many years. Before providing a detailed diary of Luftwaffe torpedo operations, he explores the origins of the aerial torpedo and offers a comparative study of its development in Germany, Britain, the USA, Italy and Japan from the First World War until the outbreak of the Second. The body of the book comprises a detailed chronological diary of operations mounted off the English coast, in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, off North Africa and in the Black Sea by the Ju 88s, He 111s, He 177s, and Ar 95s (etc) of Luftwaffe’s torpedo units, such as KG 26, KG 77 and the various floatplane-equipped Staffeln which also undertook such operations. Supplemented by colour artwork, target listings, aircraft and torpedo types, units and all ships known to have been sunk or damaged by aerial torpedo attack, this work will be an indispensable reference source for modellers and researchers. 100 photos and color artwork

Mano Ziegler, C,
Mano Ziegler was involved from the inception of the ME 262 and contributed to its design, testing, training, and even served in it operationally. Could the ME 262 have broken the Allied supremacy in the air? Why did it take so long to come into service and why were hundreds of German pilots sacrificed in developing it? Why did the ME 262 prove not to be the unparalleled success claimed by Goering, and why were German cities left dangerously exposed against Allied bombing campaigns? These are only some the important questions this new book tackles. This book also explores Hitler's personal involvement in the design and production. Illustrated with photos.

Herbert Ringlstetter, C,O,
Major Helmut Wick failed to return from a mission over the English Channel on 28 November 1940 and is listed as missing to this day. This fate ended a picture book military and flying career. In just three months Helmut Wick had risen from Oberleutnant and Staffelkapitän to Kommodore of the tradition-rich Jagd-geschwader “Richthofen” Nr. 2 and with fifty-six victories had become the leading German fighter pilot. At the time he was the youngest Major and Geschwader-kommodore in the Luftwaffe. With statements from witnesses, including former foes, and with more than 220 photographs and documents, some never before published, Herbert Ringlstetter has created a true picture of Helmut Wick. Not only was he a daring and highly-decorated fighter pilot, but the father of two children and a husband who left behind a grieving wife. 250. GERMAN ROCKET FIGHTERS OF WWII
Hans-Peter Diedrich, C,O,
This book is the first to present every rocket aircraft flown in Germany and the rocket systems developed by Walter and BMW, as well as several of the most interesting projects drawn up by Germany’s aviation industry. In 1940 the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Segelflug launched the DFS 194, developed by Alexander Lippisch, and the tests with this experimental plane laid the foundation for the Messerschmitt Me 163, the world’s first operational rocket fighter. Using a Walter rocket engine, the Me 163 achieved hitherto unimaginable climb rates and speeds. It was in this rocket powered plane that, on 2 October 1941, Heini Dittmar reached 1003 km/h and thus became the first pilot in the world to break the magic mark of 1000 km/h. In so doing, he also brushed against the sound barrier. The technology incorporated into Germany’s rocket planes – the Messerschmitt Me 163 Bs and Cs, the Me 263, and Bachem Ba 349 Natter – was recognized throughout the world as cutting edge and after the war had a major impact on the technological development of other countries. This book is a must-have for every aviation enthusiast.

JAGDGESCHWADER 300 "WILDE SAU": A CHRONICLE OF A FIGHTER GESCHWADER IN THE BATTLE FOR GERMANY
VOLUME ONE: JUNE 1943 - SEPTEMBER 1944
VOLUME TWO: SEPTEMBER 1944 - MAY 1945
Jaen-Yves Lorant & Richard Goyat, C,O,
The Wilde Sau Geschwader JG 300 played a key role in the aerial defense of the Reich during the last two years of WWII but has never before been the subject of a serious and detailed study until now. This work thus fills a major void in the history of the war in the air. This chronicle has been assembled with the participation of more than 130 veterans and their families, traced and interviewed in the course of more than twenty years research. It sheds new light on flying operations and aerial combat as experienced by German fighter pilots in the battles that took place over Germany. Interspersed with numerous vivid personal accounts, it is a work that has a uniquely human and personal dimension. The authors have undertaken an in-depth comparative study of German, British and American primary sources and archival records, with the chief aim of minimizing errors and inaccuracies and ruling out dubious information. Far from seeking the 'glorify' German or Allied aviators, they have reconstructed as accurately as possible the fates of the actors in this immense human drama and pay them due tribute. This history of JG 300 also deals with those aspects of the air war often neglected in the specialist literature such as the daily routines of the ground personnel and the navigation methods practiced by single seat fighters. Included are comprehensive loss and victory listings, and more than 800 photographs in the two volumes collected from private sources. Over 40 color profiles and paintings by Thomas A. Tullis and Richard Goyat are planned.

MESSERSCHMITT Me 262 THE PRODUCTION LOG 1941-1945
Dan O'Connell, C,O,
This is an essential work of reference on the history of the world's first operational jet fighter, the Me 262. First flown as a pure jet on 18th July 1942, on 25th July 1944 an Me 262 became the first jet aircraft used in combat when it attacked a British photo-reconnaissance Mosquito flying over Munich. Some 1,500 Me 262s were built but less than 20% of these actually flew in combat. Most remained on the ground awaiting bomber conversion, or were unable to fly because of lack of fuel, spare parts or trained pilots. This is the first time that a detailed summary of every known and identified Me 262 has been compiled. Some 1200 of the 1500 aircraft constructed have been identified. The book lists sequentially each aircraft by Werknummer (Works Number) from prototypes and test aircraft through to all variants of operational machines, together with known pilots, assigned units and recorded flights. Where known the fate of each individual aircraft is given and where possible, a photo of each aircraft will accompany its entry in the Werknummer log.

Hans-Joachim von Lessen, C, German text
This book documents mostly in striking full color the results of the Allied bombing raid in Germany. These photos like none other published in the past really show the destruction in gruesome detail. I have heard about these photos existing in the past, the photographer ordered by the SS to destroy them, but he kept them and now for the first time we can see the the results of the bombing terror during the later part of the war. Also includes color photo of the Luftwaffe defense by air and defense on the ground, as well as a nice section of color portraits of Luftwaffe pilots taking part in the defense of Germany. German text only but eventually there will be an English
translation sheet for the color photo captions that I will send to purchasers of the book.

263. ACES OF THE REICH: THE MAKING OF A LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER PILOT
Mike Spick, C,
In 1939, The Luftwaffe was arguably the world's best-equipped and -trained air force. Its fighters were second to none, and their pilots had a tactical system superior to any other in the world. In campaigns over Poland, Norway, the Low Countries and France, they carried all before them. Only in the summer of 1940 did they fail by a narrow margin in achieving air superiority over England. In the West, with a mere holding force, they maintained an enviable kill-loss ratio against the RAF, while elsewhere they swept through the Balkans, then decimated the numerically formidable Soviet Air Force. Their top scorers set marks in air combat that have never been surpassed. Yet within three years, and despite the introduction of the jet Me 262, the world's most advanced fighter, the Luftwaffe fighter arm, the Jagdwaffe, had been totally defeated. How did this happen? Air-warfare historian Mike Spick explores the question in depth. His most surprising conclusion is that the motivation of the Jagdwaffe was fundamentally flawed. The legend of Manfred von Richthofen, aka the Red Baron - the top-scoring pilot of World War I - which was promoted by Commander-in-Chief Hermann Goering to enhance his own image, became a paradigm. What mattered most to German fighter-pilots was a high victory score and decorations, at the expense of all else. The result was often an unseemly race for the top spot, which had a pernicious effect on the efficacy of German air combat. From the failings of High Command to the scores and decorations of individuals, "Aces of the Reich" is a compelling study of World War II's most fearsome air force and the skilled pilots who flew with it. Mike Spick's other works include "Luftwaffe Figher Aces" and "Luftwaffe Victorious".

265. PROJEKT NATTER LAST OF THE WONDER WEAPONS: THE LUFTWAFFE'S VERTICAL TAKE-OFF ROCKET INTERCEPTOR
Brett Gordon, C,O,
In 1944 in response to the bombing of German cities and factories by the Allied strategic bomber offensive, the little-known firm of Bachem Werk in Waldsee in south-west Germany developed an extraordinary, highly secret, vertical take-off, single-seat rocket fighter intended to offer high-speed defence of key targets. Known as Projekt Natter Project Viper, this radical aircraft was the brainchild of Dipl.-Ing. Erich Bachem who offered the commander of the Luftwaffe Fighter Arm, General Adolf Galland, an inexpensive means with which to intercept and attack Allied heavy bombers using a vertically-launched, semi-expendable machine built of wood and armed with a nose-mounted honeycomb battery of spin-stabilised air-to-air rocket shells or two machine cannon. No less a figure than the feared head of the SS, Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler, showed interest in the project, and through the offices of the SS, Bachem was able to move forward swiftly with his design under the programme for an economical target-defence interceptor. Once blasted into the air from its 15 metre vertical launch pole, the pilot of the Natter was to climb under auto-pilot control towards an enemy bomber formation using an internal rocket with a rate of climb of 11,600 metres per minute. The pilot would then target an enemy bomber and fire his battery of 24 rockets. Immediately he would dive his little craft down to a lower altitude, level off and prepare to leave the machine. By pulling a lever the nose would fly off and a parachute would deploy from the rear fuselage which would slow the Natter abruptly. The pilot would continue forwards leaving the cockpit under his own inertia whereupon he would open his personal parachute. The rear portion of the machine would also float to earth where, along with the rocket motor, it would be salvaged for reuse. This book which may be considered as the most comprehensive likely to date is the result of ten years research on the part of the author who has worked from the manufacturer’s documents and test reports. 170 rare period photos and colour illustrations

J. Richard Smith, S,O,
The Arado Ar 234 was the first purpose-built jet bomber. Although the prototypes were largely complete by the end of 1941, delays in engine supply meant that it was not until July 1943 that the type first flew. More than 220 had been built by the War's end, although only a small proportion entered service. First of a new series aimed specifically at the modeller, a detailed development and operational history is supported by drawings, diagrams, 2 colour profiles, 3 maps, 134 b/w & 2 colour photos.

V-2 ROCKET
George Kennedy, C,O,
Germany’s V-2 looks at one of the major technological advances of the Second World War, the V-2 ballistic missile. Although dwarfed by today’s giant rockets, the V-2 represented a quantum leap beyond anything previously built. During the last six months of the war in Europe, Germany launched thousands of these missiles against the Allies. This book traces the origins and development of the V-2, from groups of individual experimenters in the 1930s to its use as a weapon system. Particular emphasis is paid to such topics as the structure and components of the missile, its ground support equipment, and field procedures. After the war, the V-2 formed the foundation for the space programs of the Soviet Union and United States. Information is included on previously ignored V-2 launches in the United States. 269. LUFTWAFFE HANDBOOK 1935-1945
Gordon Williamson, C-O
Reichmarschall Hermann Goring's Luftwaffe was the most pro-Nazi of the three services. As well as aviation units, the Luftwaffe included airborne forces and units of ground troops. The Luftwaffe was at the forefront of the dramatic German Blitzkrieg successes of the early part of the war, with dive-bombers working in close cooperation with armored units on the ground. As the tide of the war turned, the Luftwaffe was unsuccessful in preventing the destruction of German cities and industry by Allied bombers, despite the development of a highly effective night-fighter force. The latter years of the war saw the development of new, technologically advanced aircraft that were light years ahead of anything the Allies were considering, such as jet fighters, rocket-propelled aircraft, 'flying wings' and many others. As well as examining the Luftwaffe's organization and command structure, strategy, tactics, research and development, Gordon Williamson provides brief biographies of its most important figures, from field marshals to individual fighter pilots. He also surveys key aircraft types, uniforms and insignia to provide a comprehensive summary of the Luftwaffe in action between 1935 and 1945.

JUNKERS JU 388: DEVELOPMENT, TESTING AND PRODUCTION OF THE LAST JUNKERS HIGH-ALTITUDE AIRCRAFT
Christoph Vernaleken and Martin Handig, C,O
The Junkers Ju 388 was a high-altitude aircraft developed from the Ju 88. In its bomber and reconnaissance versions it would elude enemy fighters by flying high, while as a heavy fighter and night-fighter it was to intercept the Boeing B-29 and the feared DeHavilland Mosquito. In developing this last member of the Ju 88 family, the Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke was able to draw on a wealth of experience with high-altitude aircraft such as the Ju 49, EF 61 and Ju 86 P/R. The Luftwaffe had great plans for the Ju 388. In the summer of 1944 it was one of the five remaining aircraft types in Delivery Plan 226, along with the Me 262, Ar 234, Ta 152 and Do 335. These five types were to fill all roles. With the exception of the Ju 388, all of these aircraft have been dealt with extensively in aviation literature. This book closes a gap in the available literature, reconstructing for the first time from original documents the complete story of the Ju 388. over 500 b/w and color photographs

LUFTWAFFE ADVANCED AIRCRAFT PROJECTS TO 1945 VOLUME 1: FIGHTERS & GROUND ATTACK AIRCRAFT, ARADO TO JUNKERS
Ingolf Meyer, C,O,
This work and its companion, which will be published towards the end of 2006, will deal with fighters, night-fighters and attack aircraft, alphabetically by manufacturer. This first volume will cover aircraft, projects and designs produced by manufacturers from Arado through to Junkers, the second book those from the manufacturers Lippisch to Zeppelin. It is understood that, over the course of this new series, approximately 40% of the aircraft discussed and illustrated will not have appeared in the original series. In order to deal with the many new aircraft featured in these books, their style will be markedly different from the earlier volumes. They will have more illustrations and less text. Normally only one aircraft will be dealt with on each page. For many, it was the illustrations, which made such an impact when Luftwaffe Secret Projects was first published. Increasing their number in the new series can only enhance the appeal of these books. 175 color illustrations as well as many black and white line drawings.

Martin Pegg, S,O,
This is the first of two volumes, which will provide an in-depth study into the aircraft, camouflage and markings, and operations of the transport, airlift and heavy lift units of the Luftwaffe between 1937 and 1945. The Transportflieger, an often forgotten arm of the Luftwaffe, provided essential supply and battlefield support to both the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe in their campaigns across Western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, North Africa, the Mediterranean and finally the Ardennes and the remains of the Reich, during the Second World War. There were some 30 Knight’s Cross holders who flew in the transport units. This volume includes some 200 photographs drawn from a variety of private sources, the majority of which are previously unpublished. Alongside the photographic content, the book also includes specially prepared colour artworks and first-hand reminiscences from those who actually flew with the Transportflieger during the war.

LUFTWAFFE COLOURS TRANSPORTER VOLUME 2: LUFTWAFFE TRANSPORTER UNITS 1943 - 1945
Martin Pegg, S,O,
This is the concluding volume of this in-depth study of the Luftwaffe’s transport units during World War Two. Undoubtedly the workhorse that is synonymous with these units was the legendary Ju 52 and this aircraft gets appropriate exposure in its transport, parachute and airlift roles. However, the units also deployed a wide range of interesting aircraft such as the massive Me 321 and Me 323 Gigant heavy-lift glider and six-engined transporter, as well as the impressive multi-engined Ju 290, Ju 352 Herkules, Ju 390 and the huge Bv 222 flying boat. Also covered will be the smaller Gotha tactical transport gliders and the role of captured USAAF B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators which flew agent-dropping missions for the Luftwaffe’s clandestine special tasks unit, KG200. These two volumes provide a comprehensive and highly detailed account of these units which will be required reading for all historians and modellers of the Luftwaffe during these years.

MESSERSCHMITT Me 264 AMERIKA BOMBER
Robert Forsyth & Eddie J Creek, C,O,
In 1939, as Europe went to war, the German Air Ministry asked aircraft manufacturers for proposals for an ‘Amerikabomber’, an ultra-long-range, four-engined aircraft capable of attacking the USA from airfields in Germany. Projects were tendered by Junkers, Focke-Wulf and Messerschmitt. The latter proposed the Me264 and Messerschmitt’s personal influence was such that he was not only allowed to go ahead with the design, but was also given an immediate order for three aircraft. This book examines the history of this controversial project. Using original German documentation and rare photographs, this book details the story of the remarkable ‘Amerikabomber’ projects which were intended to bomb New York and other American cities. The aircraft types featured in the book include, in addition to the Me 264, the Ta 400, Fw 238, Ju 390 and the jet-powered Ho XVIII B flying wing. The books also studies the reality behind the myth associated with Germany’s atomic bomb carrier. 200 colour and b/w Illustrations.

BATTLES WITH THE NACHTJAGD: THE NIGHT AIRWAR OVER EUROPE 1939-1945
Theo E.W. Boiten, C,O,
Battles of the Nachtjagd traces the parallel developments in RAF night-bombing and night-fighting in the Luftwaffe, from the pioneering efforts on both sides in this new form of airwar up to the climax of the strategic bombing offensive in 1945 and the simultaneous introduction of the Me 262 jet in the German night fighter arm. The authors have traced surviving aircrew from both sides and have succeeded in matching many Bomber Command losses to German night fighter claims. Above all this book is the gripping story of the German night fighter versus bomber war over the Third Reich 1941-1945. There are contributions from scores of veteran RAF and Commonwealth aircrew and their German adversaries, which shed new light on many aspects of the giant and deadly nocturnal battle over northwestern Europe. The narrative is extensively illustrated with more than 400 rare and mostly unpublished photographs from the personal collections of the veterans‚ wartime albums, which grippingly illustrate the strategic and tactical developments in this most deadly struggle. BLACK CROSS/RED STAR THE AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT, VOLUME 3: EVERYTHING FOR STALINGRAD
Christer Bergstrom, C,O,
Never before has the history of the air war on the Eastern Front been written in such depth, in such detail, and so carefully balanced between both sides. The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, has been subtitled Everything for Stalingrad and covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. Similar to Volume 2, Volume 3 will contain a large number of photos and 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles, by one of the best aircraft profile artists in the world--Claes Sundin.

286. STUKA Vol. 1: 1937-1941
Peter C. Smith, S,O,
The name Stuka is an abbreviation of the German word sturzkampfflugzeug, meaning dive bomber. The fearsome sight and sound of the Luftwaffe's Ju-87 Stuka diving on its target, its siren wailing, spearheaded German victories in Poland, Norway, the Low Countries, the Mediterranean, and Russia between 1939 and 1943. This book covers the pre-war development of the Stuka concept in Germany and early dive-bomber prototypes. The Stuka’s initial deployment, in the Nazi Legion Condor sent to assist Franco’s forces in the Spanish Civil War is examined, followed by the aircraft’s central role in the blitzkrieg war. The operational history of the aircraft continues through the Channel Battles and the Battle of Britain. The volume concludes with the opening phases of the war against Russia. Written by Peter C. Smith, an internationally renowned authority on dive- bombers and the Ju 87 in particular, the book contains an impressive selection of historic photos, artworks, and first-hand accounts from those who flew the aircraft. 200 black and white illustrations plus color artwork

GOTTERDAMERUNG: LUFTWAFFE WRECKS AND GRAVEYARDS Vol. 1
Brett Green, S,O,
Photos of aircraft scrap heaps, or "graveyards", taken by advancing Allied troops in North Africa and Europe from 1942 onwards, are a subject of proven popularity with aircraft enthusiasts and modelers. These scrap heaps often contained rare mixes of aircraft bearing unit markings and schemes not seen in more conventional and well-known views. Sometimes these photos serve to disprove previous theories. Where possible, this book provides before and after photos of the aircraft featured, showing it in service as well as in its "graveyard" condition. Alongside the photographs are detailed captions describing the close-up views of unit insignia and markings where possible. Aircraft covered in this book include all types – fighters, bombers, nightfighters, transports, and maritime aircraft, and some of the photos feature aircraft shot down over British soil, particularly during the Battle of Britain. Many of the book's photos also come from the period following the defeat of the Third Reich. 200 color & black and white illustrations

289. LUFTWAFFE AT WAR: GATHERING STORM 1933-1939 Volume 1
E.R. Hooton, S,O,
In 1933, when Hitler came to power, the German military, as a result of the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, was weak. Yet within six years, a virtually unstoppable war machine was unleashed on Europe. All three elements of the armed forces played their part in the evolution of German strategy, but in terms of the Blitzkrieg, it was the Luftwaffe that had the most important role. This was to obtain air superiority over the theatre of operations and cause as much disruption as possible to the enemy’s ground forces and other assets before the army swept forward. An understanding of how the Luftwaffe developed in the years before 1939 is essential to comprehending its role when war began.
This first title in a new Classic series examines the expansion of the Luftwaffe between 1933 and 1939. Starting with the small air force inherited by the Nazis, the book sets out in detail how the Luftwaffe rapidly expanded and gained combat experience in the Spanish Civil War, before becoming the potent force that spearheaded the blitzkrieg against Poland in the autumn of 1939.

In the second title in this new series, Edward Hooton examines the period between the victory over Poland in 1939 and the crushing defeats of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway and Denmark during the dark days of 1940 when, ultimately, Britain alone was left undefeated. As in the Polish campaign, the Luftwaffe’s role was pivotal. It won air superiority over the theatre of operations and was able to destroy much of the enemy’s materiel before the army swept forward. This book provides a detailed analysis of that achievement. 200 color and black and white illustration.

290. DORNIER 20 335 PFIEL (ARROW) THE LUFTWAFFE'S FASTEST PISTON-ENGINE FIGHTER
J. Richard Smith, C,O,
A brutal but innovative design, the massive Opush-pull’ Dornier Do 335 all-weather heavy fighter was one of the many radical ideas which seemingly poured out from German aircraft designers towards the end of the Third Reich. Capable of producing a maximum speed in excess of 750km/h at an altitude of 6,400m, it was the fastest piston-engine aircraft produced by Germany in World War Two.
The authors have been collecting information and superb quality photographic material on this remarkable aircraft for many years. They have unearthed a great deal of little-known and previously unpublished material on the type. In the course of this book, they dispel many myths and produce a definitive guide to an aircraft which has been the subject of frequent erroneousassessments over the years. The Dornier Do 335 has long merited the detailed study which it finally receives in this monograph and in this book Richard Smith and Eddie Creek provide the Luftwaffe historian and the aviation modeller with a definitive guide to a remarkable aircraft, 200 color and b/w illustrations.

AIR-LAUNCHED DOODLEBUGS: HITER'S V1 AND 111/KAMPFGESCHWADER 3 & 53
Peter Smith, C,
The V 1, or ‘Doodlebug’ or ‘Flying-bomb’ came into use in June 1944 and, together with the V 2 Rocket, was Hitler’s final hope in face of the advancing Allied forces sweeping across Europe towards Germany. Of the 8,000 that were launched within the first 80 days, some 2,300 reached the London area where they caused more death and destruction to its population and buildings. As the front line moved eastwards, many of the ground-based launch ramps became denied to the German forces and the modest range of the missile meant that other means of launching must be considered to continue the threat.
An air-launching system, utilizing the Luftwaffe’s Heinkel 111 bomber, was developed and operated by the newly formed Kampfgeschwader units. This posed a dramatic new threat to the UK because the V 1’s effective range was considerably increased and it’s mobile firing point offered a much greater target area when fired from an aircraft flying over the North Sea. This is the story of the development and operation of this new form of attack and also of the Allied reaction and defense-measures taken to minimize damage.

THE LUFTWAFFE OVER GERMANY: DEFENSE OF THE REICH
Donald Caldwell, C,O,
The Luftwaffe over Germany tells the story of one of the longest and most intense air battles in history. The daylight air struggles over Germany during World War II involved thousands of aircraft, dozens of units, and hundreds of aerial engagements. Until now, there has been no single book that covers the complete story, from the highest levels of air strategy to the individual tales of Fw 190s, Bf 109s and Me 262s in air combat against the American bomber streams. This work explores the German air defence system until its collapse in 1945. It examines the detrimental effect of Luftwaffe theory and doctrine on the German air arm's ability to defend the homeland once the Allied Combined Bomber Offensive began in earnest. The hard-pressed Luftwaffe leadership attempted to cobble together an air-defence network while at the same time tending to the combat fronts in Russia and the Mediterranean. Units developed specialised tactics and weapons for dealing with heavily defended bomber formations, while senior commanders sought to construct an elaborate command and control system integrating radar, observers, anti-aircraft guns and fighters. By mid-1944, they had lost the battle – but had exacted a terrible price from the Americans in the process. The product of a ten-year collaboration between two noted Luftwaffe historians, this work fills a major gap in the literature of World War II. The authors have examined original war diaries, logbooks, doctrine manuals, after-action reports and interviews with many combat veterans to produce a richly detailed account. Illustrated with more than 160 photographs, as well as new maps and diagrams, The Luftwaffe over Germany is certain to become the standard work on the subject. Includes total coverage of tactics, technology, weaponry and pilots, with more than 160 photographs

BARBAROSSA: THE AIR BATTLE JULY - DECEMBER 1941
Christer Bergstrom, C,O,
Although Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of Russia in June 1941, is widely perceived seen as a great land offensive, equally important was the aerial supremacy that the Luftwaffe achieved over the front during its early phases. Without the elimination of the threat posed by the Soviet air force, it would have been impossible for the army to have made the rapid advances of the summer and autumn of 1941.
This book provides a detailed account of the massive aerial campaign fought in the skies over the Soviet Union following the launch of Operation Barbarossa. Drawing on both Russian and German sources, the strength of Christer Bergström's writing lies in its detail, his ability to tell the story from the viewpoints of both sides and to put events in both their strategic and tactical contexts. A large number of rare and previously unpublished photographs, biographical studies of major players, data tables, technical assessments and appendices accompany the text. Compiled by one of the world's leading experts on the air war over the Eastern Front, this is the first in a series of books to cover the major phases of World War Two in this theatre of operations. 125 color and black and white illustrations.

FIGHTER ACES OF THE LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR 2
Philip Kaplan, C
This book examines the reality behind the myths of the legendary German fighter aces of World War II. It explains why only a small minority of pilots - those in whom the desire for combat overrode everything - accounted for so large a proportion of the victories. It surveys the skills that a successful fighter pilot must have - a natural aptitude for flying, marksmanship, keen eyesight - and the way in which fighter tactics have developed. The book examines the history of the classic fighter aircraft that were flown, such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke Wulf Fw 190, and examines each type's characteristics, advantages and disadvantages in combat. The accounts of the experiences of fighter pilots are based on archival research, diaries, letters, published and unpublished memoirs and personal interviews with veterans. The pilots included are Werner Molders, Gunther Rall, Adolf Galland, Erich Hartmann and Johannes Steinhoff. 100 b/w photos.

LUFTWAFFE EFFICIENCY AND PROMOTION REPORTS FOR THE KNIGHT'S CROSS WINNERS, 2 Volumes
French Maclean, C,O,
In World War I German and British bombers sometimes faced a few dozen light machine-guns defending the target. In World War II Luftwaffe Stuka dive-bombers braved the combined fire of over 1,000 anti-aircraft guns to sink several capital ships at Kronstadt in the Gulf of Finland. In World War I hundreds of thousands of German troops fought months to gain ground measured in yards. During World War II, eighty-five Fallschirmjäger captured one of the world's strongest fortifications at Fort Eben Emael, Belgium - manned by 1,200 defenders - in only eighteen hours in May 1940.
As a result of these and many other deeds of valor, some 1,785 Luftwaffe officers and enlisted men won the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross - World War II Germany's highest decoration for bravery. This is their story through the eyes of the commanders of 113 of these men, as recorded in their official efficiency reports contained here. Each volume has 150 b/w photos

TURBOJET: HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT 1930- 1960, VOL. 1 GREAT BRITAIN AND GERMANY
Anthony Kay, C,O
This important project brings together the early histories of the development of
the turbojet, turboprop and turboshaft engines for the first time. The work of
twelve nations [Great Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States,
Japan, France, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Hungary]
is described from the earliest days up to the end of the 1950s. This was the
Golden Age of aeronautical development and in that time hundreds of engines were
developed using the new and exciting gas turbine technology. These engines
powered some of the most important and best loved aircraft of the century.
This first of two volumes looks at the pioneering work of British and German
designers and manufacturers, starting with the very first jet engines designed
by Frank Whittle before World War Two. Technical details are set in their matrix
of events, personalities, politics and world history. The text is supported with
almost 300 black & white photographs and drawings and the book is complete with
appendices, including engine data tables.

LUFTWAFFE CAMOUFLAGE AND MARKINGS 1933-1945: PHOTO ARCHIVE 1
Ken Merrick, Eddie J Creek and Brett Green, C,O
The debate over Luftwaffe paint, camouflage schemes and markings has raged for
many years and continues to be a source of great interest among aviation
enthusiasts and model builders. The first two volumes in the ‘Luftwaffe and
Camouflage Markings’ series sought to remove much of this controversy. By
returning to the original sources and through the use of specially prepared
paint chips, these two volumes provided, for the first time, a definitive guide
to this highly complex subject. The two volumes were extremely successful in
terms of sales and attracted much praise from readers and reviewers. However, it
was recognised from the start that the books could only include a fraction of
the wealth of photographic material which had been unearthed in the course of
the research and so the potential for further photographic supplements,
featuring specific aspects of the subject, was recognised from the outset.
This is the first of these photographic supplements to the original two volumes.
Compiled by Ken Merrick, the author of the original two volume Luftwaffe
Camouflage and Markings 1933-1945, and fellow Australian Brett Green, each of
these follow up books will major on specific aspects of Luftwaffe practice from
1933 to 1945. The key feature in this book is cockpit detail and
instrumentation. Other topics covered by the photos are; day fighters,
nightfighters, ground attack aircraft, bombers, maritime and reconnaissance
aircraft, and those used in primarily civil and commercial capacities as well
for training and liaison. The two volumes of Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings
1933-1945 were well-received and sold in spectacular numbers despite their
relatively high cover price. This new photographic supplement is certain to find
a ready market amongst all those who bought the original volumes as well as all
those seeking detailed reference material on this complex subject. 300 mono and

SCHLACHTFLIEGER: LUFTWAFFE GROUND ATTACK UNITS 1937-1945
J Richard Smith, Chris Goss, Martin Pegg, Andrew Arthy, Nick Beale & Robert
Forsyth, S,O,
One of the defining images of World War 2 is that of a Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombing
a target. For the Luftwaffe, ground-attack aircraft represented an essential
part of the German air force’s contribution to the offensive capability of the
nation’s armed forces. Throughout the war, the Luftwaffe made use of these
aircraft in both offensive and defensive actions. The aircraft used made a
significant contribution to the German victories early in the war and to
delaying defeat once the Allied forces started to advance on both the Eastern
and Western Fronts. However, whilst the Ju 87 was probably the most immediately
identifiable aircraft used by the Luftwaffe in ground-attack operations, it was
by no means the only type. Prior to World War 2, the Luftwaffe developed these
tactics using aircraft manufactured by Henschel, Arado and Heinkel. During the
Spanish Civil War these were tested in real combat conditions with the Heinkel
He 51 being used in support of Franco’s forces. Ground-attack aircraft were used
by the Germans in most theatres of the war, including tank-busting Ju 87s on the
Eastern Front and missile-fitted Focke Wulf Fw 190s after D-Day. Moreover,
whilst often perceived as being employed only in daylight, Night Harassment
Units using either Ju 87s or Fw 90s, were also deployed to attack after darkness
had fallen. In Schlachtflieger: Luftwaffe Ground Attack Aircraft, noted French
aviation historian Christian-Jacques Ehrengardt examines the development of
ground-attack tactics and aircraft from the years prior to the start of World
War 2 through to the final defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945. The book,
concentrating on the other aircraft types, represents an excellent companion to
Peter Smith’s two volumes on the Stuka in the ‘Luftwaffe Colours’ series
published in 2006. The book includes a detailed text as well as around 250 mono
and and colour images, many previously unpublished, along with specially
prepared colour artworks. The use of ground-attack aircraft was of critical
importance to Nazi German’s initial successes in World War 2. With the
publication of this book those interested in the aviation history of World War 2
and aero-modellers will gain a much better appreciation of the tactics adopted
and the aircraft flown. 250 mono and colour illustrations including artworks

PROJECT 262: THE TEST PILOT'S JOURNAL
Wolf Czaia, C,O, Flat signed (ie signed directly in the book) by Wolf Czaia.
The Messerschmitt Me 262, forerunner of all military jets and countless civil
developments. Of those machines produced up to 1945 scarcely a handful remain.
They are either rotting away or enshrined as lifeless museum exhibits. But since
1992 five flying replicas, true in almost every detail to the original weapons
system that first allowed man to stand on the threshold of the sound barrier,
have been produced in the USA. Time and again the ambitious undertaking seemed
about to founder - on financial, technical and bureaucratic hurdles, upon the
crash landing of the first aircraft to be completed. But nothing could deter the
small band of highly qualified specialists who had devoted themselves to the
project body and soul. And in the end triumph was theirs. Now one of them tells
the whole story in a superb full-color illustrated book. He is Wolf Czaia, the
Me 262 project's test pilot. Jim Larsen, one of the best aviation photographers
in the world, is responsible for the truly breathtaking pictures that complement
the text. Together, the end result sets new standards in aviation literature.
Never before has a warbird project of this kind been documented in such an
authentic, informative and aesthetic way: a first-hand account of the
development, construction and test-flying of the new Me 262. The book comes
complete with a 45 minute DVD of professional documentary film quality. The
commentary is by Wolf Czaia himself and the film covers not only the manufacture
of the machines but, above all, also features detailed in-cockpit as well as
air-to-air sequences taken during the numerous test-flights. 151 color and 2 b/w
illustrations. Also includes a DVD of 45 min length and professional documentary
film quality, commentary by the author.

FIRST FALLSCHIRMJAGER DIVISION IN WWII VOL 1 YEARS OF ATTACK
Ben Christensen, C,O
Based on their combat achievements, friends and foes alike have singled out the
men from the German 1st Parachute Division as the best soldiers in World War II,
as they at Eben Emael executed the most successful commando raid of the war; on
Crete the most audacious attack; and in Monte Cassino the most dogged defense. A
total of 129 Knight's Crosses were awarded to men from this division - twice as
many as any other German division. For the first time a comprehensive book has
been written about the fate of this division based on all available sources and
with the invaluable aide of veterans from the division. It is a warts-and-all
tale, which gives a candid insight not only to the battles from the German
perspective, but also to the minds of the men who became the backbone of the
division. The books contains more than 500 color and black and white photos,
many of which have never been printed before. Furthermore, there are thirty
unique maps in color, thirty detailed Orders of Battle, 500 short biographies of
the key personnel in the division, and a list of all the division's Knight's
Cross and the German Cross in Gold winners.
The first volume, Years of Attack, follows the recruitment and training of the
Fallschirmjägers and their revolutionary vertical deployment in Scandinavia,
Holland, Eben Emael, Corinth and Crete through to two tough tours as elite
infantry on the Eastern Front. The second volume, Years of Retreat, follows the
division from the battles of El Alamein, Tunisia, Sicily, Monte Cassino,
Bologna, Normandy and Brittany to the final chaotic days before the
capitulation. The battles are brought to life through nearly 1,000 eyewitness
accounts and add new information to all the battles fought by elements of the
German 1st Fallschirmjäger Division. Illustrations: over 250 color/bw images,

THE BATTLE OF FRANCE THEN AND NOW: SIX NATIONS LOCKED IN AERIAL COMBAT SEPTEMBER
1939 TO JUNE 1940
Peter Cornwell, C,O
In these pages, Peter Cornwell tells the story of the greatest air battle of the
Second World War when six nations were locked in combat over north-western
Europe for a traumatic six weeks in 1940. We begin our account in September 1939
when the newly-formed British Air Forces in France sent the first squadrons to
the Continent. This Phoney War period is told through the eyes of Flying Officer
Edward Hall, Adjutant of No. 73 Squadron, who claimed his as the first squadron
to be sent to France and the last to leave. His unofficial war diary transports
us back over 60 years to the immediacy of the period before Hitler launched his
Blitzkrieg in May 1940. As far as RAF fighter squadrons in France were
concerned, it was an all-Hurricane show, yet it was the Blenheim and Battle
crews who suffered the brunt of the casualties. Every aircraft lost or damaged
through enemy action while operating in France is listed together with the fate
of the crews. Fighting a rearguard action almost from Day One, retreating from
airfield to airfield as the panzers roared westwards, the story of the British
Air Forces in France has never been told in this way before as it has largely
been overshadowed by the Battle of Britain which followed, yet the Battle of
France was even more costly in lives lost.
Peter Cornwell now redresses the balance as he describes the day-to-day events
as the battle unfolds, and details the losses suffered by all six nations
involved: Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and, rather belatedly,
Italy. The Royal Air Force lost more than a thousand aircraft of all types over
the Western Front during the six-week battle, but Luftwaffe losses were even
higher at over 1,800 aircraft. Having the disadvantage of fighting over foreign
soil, the RAF had many men made prisoner when baling out or crashing behind
enemy lines. All told, between September 3, 1939 and June 24, 1940, the RAF lost
1,127 airmen, of whom 415 paid the supreme sacrifice. Their names, and the
cemeteries where they lie or the memorials where they are commemorated, are
listed so their memory be not forgotten. They were - as Flying Officer Hall
describes them - 'the First of the Few'. Over 900 Illustrations.

BOMBER UNITS OF THE LUFTWAFFE 1933 - 1945 A REFERNCE SOURCE, VOLUME 1: UNITS,
FORMATION AND REDESIGNATIONS, COMMANDERS, KEY OPERATIONS, CODES AND EMBLEMS
Henry De Zeng, C,O,
During the interwar years, military planners sought new strategies to pursue in
the event of any future war. Both in Britain and in particular, in Germany there
were exponents of the theory that a major contribution to winning such a war
could be made by exploiting the potential of bombers to expand the battlefield
to the home front of their opponents, damaging the moral of the civilian
population and disrupting the means of production. In Germany, the concept of
Blitzkrieg relied heavily upon the use of the Luftwaffe’s bomber force. From the
Spanish Civil War through to Barbarossa, the integration of the Kampfflieger
forces into the overall strategy proved highly successful. Once, however,
Germany was forced onto the retreat, the tactics of the Luftwaffe’s bomber
forces changed from offensive actions to the defensive. This, the first of two
volumes, provides an unprecedented level of information on the organisation of
the Luftwaffe’s bomber forces. Some 50 bomber Geschwader are covered in the two
volumes, together with their component Staff flights and Gruppen. The books will
cover pre-war formations, designations and reorganisations and continue through
to the end of the war, with locations, bases and transfers together with an
exhaustive breakdown of theatres of operations, key battles, missions carried
out and aircraft types that were flown by each unit. They have, in addition,
comprehensive listings of unit commanders with information on when, and often
where, they were in command. As well as the aircraft, each volume includes
photographs of many unit commanders. The authors also list all known
bibliographic sources as a cross-referencing tool. Each volume is illustrated
with large numbers of photographs, many of these will be in colour, depicting
bomber aircraft in their unit markings with, wherever possible, close-ups of the
unit emblems and badges. As far as is possible each unit is also illustrated
with an emblem in full colour and a number of these will not have been seen
before. The two authors, who are well-known and highly respected as experts in
their field, have spent some twenty years compiling this most comprehensive and
detailed history of the Luftwaffe’s bomber units. This is another major
reference work aimed at aviation historians and modellers. In terms of its
scope, it is best compared to Ken Merrick’s acclaimed Luftwaffe Camouflage and
Markings volumes and these books will be sought by the same audience. c400

BOMBER UNITS OF THE LUFTWAFFE 1933-1945: A REFERENCE SOURCE VOLUME 2
Henry De Zeng, C,O
The two authors, who are well-known and highly respected as experts in their
field, have spent some twenty years compiling the most comprehensive and
detailed history and listing of all the Luftwaffe’s bomber units. This is the
second volume that covers some of the fifty bomber Geschwader, together with
their component Staff flights and Gruppen. The books cover pre-war formation,
designation and reorganisation and continue through to the end of the war, with
locations, bases and transfers together with an exhaustive break down of
theatres of operations, key battles and missions flown and aircraft types that
were flown by each unit. In addition there are comprehensive listings of unit
commanders and when – and often where – they were in command.
This is the second and final volume of a highly detailed and extraordinarily
well researched piece of work, which has never been attempted in such a way
before. It is effectively unique and will become a standard reference for
enthusiasts, aviation historians and authors. The book will be profusely
illustrated with a large number of unseen photographs depicting bomber aircraft
in their unit markings with, wherever possible, close-ups of the unit emblems
and badges, of which many could be in colour. In addition the book contains
unique photographs of many of the unit commanders. c250 mono and colour

KURSK THE AIR BATTLE - JULY 1943
Chirster Bergstrom, C ,O,
Fought in July and August 1943, the Battle of Kursk is widely regarded as the
greatest tank battle in the history of warfare. This exceptional new book
examines the massive confrontation which raged in the air over the front as the
huge German and Soviet armoured forces clashed on the ground.
Compiled by one of the world’s leading experts on the subject of the air war
over the Eastern Front, Christer Bergström, Kursk: The Air Battle, is the third
in a popular series of books covering the major phases of the air war in this
theatre of operations. No single study has ever been written in English on the
air aspect of this momentous battle. The author’s unique ability to tell the
story from the viewpoints of both sides and from both strategic and tactical
contexts makes this essential reading for all historians. There is also an
impressive array of eye-witness material accompanied by a stunning collection of
previously unpublished photographs, ‘biography boxes’, plus data tables,
technical assessments and appendices. c150 mono and colour photographs,

GERMAN AIRCRAFT IN THE SOVIET UNION AND RUSSIA
Yefim Gordon, C,O,
The first German aircraft to reach Russia found their way there before World War
1 and during the war some 120-150 German aircraft were captured. The St
Petersburg-based aircraft factory belonging to Lebedev then built copies of
captured aircraft, mainly of the Albatross types, under the designations Lebed’-IX,
Lebed’-XI, Lebed’-XII, Lebed’-18, Lebed’-24 and others. Many of these aircraft
were then used in Russia in the Civil War, including the LVG aircraft of
different types, and many captured aircraft. Between 1922 and 1924 the Soviet
Russia also acquired several hundred fighters, reconnaissance aircraft and
passenger aircraft produced by the Fokker firm which had moved from Germany to
the Netherlands. Imports also included some aircraft types produced by the
Junkers company. Some of these types were also built at the Junkers factory
based at Fili (near Moscow) under the terms of a concession which lasted until
1927. The same period saw the introduction of passenger aircraft from the
Dornier company. The Heinkel HD-37c fighter was tested in the USSR and put into
limited production as the I-7. The Heinkel He 5c was acquired in two examples.
The Soviet Navy obtained 30 Heinkel HD-55 flying boats (they were known as the
KR-1 in Soviet service). Some 80 Dornier Wal flying boats were purchased for the
Navy and for transport duties in the Arctic regions. A clandestine flying school
for the Reichswehr was set up in Lipetsk in the USSR. After 1933 purchases of
German aircraft stopped. During the Spanish war of 1936-1939 two types of
captured German aircraft were tested in the USSR. These were the Messerschmitt
Bf 109B fighter and the Heinkel He 111B bomber. In 1940 the Germans sold to the
Soviet Union several examples of their military aircraft; these included the Bf
109E, Bf 110C, He 100, Ju 88A-1, He 111E, Do 17, Do 215B-3, Focke-Wulf Fw 58,
Bücker Bü 131 Jungmeister, Bü 133 Jungmann, Fieseler Fi-156 Storch. All of them
were thoroughly studied in the USSR. During WW2 the Soviet troops also captured
a big number of German aircraft of different types, some of which were tested in
the USSR and played an important part in the development and production of
Soviet-designed jet aircraft. In 1945 the Soviet authorities set up in the
Soviet-occupied part of Germany special design bureaux staffed with German
engineers for the purpose of developing jet engines and jet-powered aircraft.
These design bureaux were soon transferred to the USSR and their work resulted
production of the mighty NK-12 turboprop engine which powers to this day the
Tu-95 strategic bombers. During the Cold War period co-operation between the
Soviet Union and Germany in the field of aviation technology was limited
primarily to contacts with the German Democratic Republic. Co-operation with the
Federal Republic of Germany did not begin to come under way before the late
1980s but in the early 1990s studies were made of an eventual co-operation
between some German companies and the Myasishchev Design Bureau (EMZ) in the
development and manufacture of the MM-1 (‘Moscow-München’) turboprop airliner.

HANS-EKKEHARD BOB
Christer Bergstrom, S,O
The story of Hans-Ekkehard Bob’s wartime career is one which personifies the
life and experiences of many of the Luftwaffe’s leading Experten – but Bob
numbered himself amongst the few who had flown in one of Germany’s pre-war
bi-plane fighter units through to the Me 262 jet fighter in 1945. He took part
in the campaigns in Poland and France, and fought in some of the most intense
air combats of the Battle of Britain shooting down fourteen Spitfires and
Hurricanes, following which he was awarded the coveted Ritterkreuz – the
Knight’s Cross – before being posted to the Balkans. Then came Russia – a vast,
challenging battlefront which tested men and machines to their limit. He
survived, and when he finally left the Eastern Front in early 1943 he had 56
confirmed victories to his credit – all scored flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
When 292 ShAP attempted to attack Dugino aerodrome on the morning of 17
December, Bob scrambled as the Il-2s appeared on the horizon. The
fast-approaching Shturmoviks and Bob’s climbing Bf 109 G-2 met head on; Bob had
opened fire with all three cannon before he even had the gear up. The first Il-2
exploded and crashed in a snow drift. Bob turned and pursued another, opening up
with all his cannon, until this too crashed into the ground. The congratulations
from his Staffel mates over the radio were apparently intercepted by the
Soviets, for on the following day they heard Radio Moscow announce: ‘Sooner or
later we will get the commander of the Devil’s squadron.’ Transferred to the
West, he went into action against USAAF heavy bombers and led the famed
Jagdgeschwader 3 ‘Udet’ on operations. The end of the war saw him serving with
Adolf Galland’s famous
JV 44. Acclaimed aviation historian Christer Bergstöm has drawn upon personal
recollections and records to produce this in-depth and graphic account of the
wartime experiences of one the Luftwaffe’s leading Jagdflieger. The text is
enhanced by rare photographs taken from Hans-Ekkehard Bob’s own collection as
well as highly detailed colour artwork by leading aviation artist, Claes Sundin.
At the last moment, Bob pushed the stick forward and attempted to dive his Bf
109 to the left, and beneath the crippled bomber. But his manoeuvre was carried
out a fraction of a second too late… Bob flashed beneath the bomber and, just as
he did, he heard a crash and felt a terrible jolt. Looking back, he saw that his
Bf 109 had lost its whole tail section, and he also saw that a part of the
bomber’s starboard wing was missing. 77 rare b+w photographs, 11 beautiful
colour artwork profiles.

#2 MAX-HELLMUTH
OSTERMANN
Christer Bergstrom, S,O,
The distance to the Spitfire diminished to 100 metres – by which time the wings
of the Spitfire covered the circle in his gunsight – and Ostermann was still
holding his fire. In the next second, the Spitfire opened fire and the Bf 109 in
front dived away. This was the moment Ostermann had been waiting for. He pressed
both firing buttons and immediately scored a series of direct hits. The Spitfire
burst into flames and descended vertically, leaving a grey plume of smoke. A
moment later a sudden white eruption of spray in the sea below indicated the
point where the Spitfire went in… From a young, inexperienced, novice pilot who
struggled to master the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstörer in early
1940 to a fearsome exponent of the Bf 109 over the English Channel, Yugoslavia
and the Russian Front, Max-Hellmuth Ostermann’s war ended in August 1942 with
102 confirmed aerial victories to his credit – the majority of them against the
Soviet Air Force. When Strebenk saw the German four-aircraft Schwarm disperse
and the enemy pilots came breaking into him, he banked to the left to evade the
attack. But that did not help him against a skilful pilot like Max-Hellmuth
Ostermann. The German pilot opened the throttle wide and was soon in position,
180 metres behind Strebenk’s Bf 109. When Karlo Strebenk tried to evade through
a descending left turn, Ostermann’s cannon shells ripped through the fuselage
and wings of his Bf 109 in a perfect deflection shot. The Yugoslavian
Messerschmitt turned over and fell vertically toward the earth until it exploded
in a field below. Karl Strebenk had no chance of surviving. Whilst to date, the
diminutive Ostermann has not been regarded by English language historians as one
of the most renowned of the Luftwaffe Experten, he was nevertheless decorated
with the Knight’s Cross with Oakleaves and Swords – the tenth officer in the
German armed forces to receive the award – for his ‘repeatedly proven herosim’.
Ostermann frequently scored two victories in one day and his final operations
saw him in command of a Staffel of JG 54, the famous Grünherzgeschwader. A
glance at the ammunition counter in front of him told him that he still had
enough ammunition left, so he kicked hard on the rudder and dived down. He
singled out one DB-3 and hung on to it as it raced, just metres above the
treetops of a forest. This was dangerous flying. The Bf 109 bucked and bounced
in the slipstream from the bomber’s twin engines, and Ostermann had to hold the
stick hard so that his fighter was not pushed into the treetops which flashed
past underneath. When he gave the first burst of fire, the air currents caused
him to miss. He pushed the throttle handle forward, turned out of the slipstream
and attacked obliquely from astern instead. Flashes indicated hits on the
starboard engine and fuselage of the bomber. The engine emitted a trail of smoke
which rapidly grew thick and black... 50 rare b+w photographs, 13 beautiful
colour artwork profiles.

326. THE LUFTWAFFE RITTERKREUZTRAGER 1939 -
1945 A RESOURCE GUIDE TO THE ACES AND THEIR AIRCRAFT
NO.
1 HANS-JOACHIM MARSEILLE
James H. Kitchens, III and John R. Beaman, S,O,
Few fighter pilots in the history of aviation have achieved such spectacular
recognition as Hans-Joachim Marseille. His accomplishments over the deserts of
North Africa during the SecondWorld War earned him the sobriquet ‘The Star of
Africa’. On one day in September 1942, he accounted for no fewer than seventeen
Allied aircraft shot down in three missions. His final score of 158 enemy
aircraft would be the highest such achievement against the Western Allies
throughout the war. This book is not intended as another biography or
photographic account of Marseille’s life and career, but rather as a valuable
and unique encyclopaedia to the prevailing historical record on the man and his
aircraft, from his early Bf 109 E to the Bf 109 G of his later operational
service with Jagdgeschwader 27 in Africa. Based on sustained and exacting study
by the authors, both of whom are internationally recognised authorities on the
Luftwaffe, this study offers those already familiar with Marseille an immensely
rich and easy to use reference source which may well dispel numerous
preconceptions. To those approaching the subject in detail for the first time,
the book will provide comprehensive analysis and revealing insight into
Marseille’s aircraft as well as a guide for further study.
With fascinating photographs and specially commissioned artwork by leading
aviation artist, Tom Tullis, this is the reference source for Hans-Joachim
Marseille and his aircraft. 37 rare b+w and color photographs, 10 beautiful
colour artwork profiles and 15 rudder profiles

BAGRATION TO BERLIN: THE FINAL AIR BATTLES IN THE EAST, 1944 - 45
Christer Bergstrom, C,0
Written by a leading expert in World War 2 air operations on the Eastern Front,
this is the last in a quartet of books that together gives total coverage of air
battles in this theatre of war from 1941 to 1945. It details the final phase of
air operations in the East from late 1943, and then covers the German defensive
operations around the River Dnepr and the Sea of Azov in September 1943, and the
subsequent German retreat and the air bridge to Cherkassy in early 1944. Final
coverage is given to the major Soviet offensive against the Army Group Centre in
mid-1944, the fall of Romania and the autumn battles in Poland, Courland and on
the Vistula, ending with the major Soviet winter offensive of early 1945 and the
last ditch battles over Berlin itself. The strength of the author’s writing lies
not only in the fantastic in-depth detail, but the ability to tell the story
from the viewpoints of both sides and also from both strategic and tactical
contexts. There is also unique eye-witness material and the text is accompanied
by a large number of rare and many previously unpublished photographs,
‘biography boxes’, plus data tables, technical assessments and appendices. 400 b/w

NIGHT FIGHTERS: LUFTWAFFE AND THE RAF AIR COMBAT OVER EUROPE 1939-1945
Colin D. Heaton, C
Night Fighters examines the historical, technological, tactical, and strategic
evolution of limited visibility aerial combat as the air forces of Great Britain
and Germany dueled in the night skies during WWII. The book is based on
extensive research and interviews with the key planners responsible for their
respective national strategies governing the conduct of the nighttime air war as
well as the airmen who fought the war. This arena of WWII combat produced a
plethora of technological innovations, the results of which are seen today in
everyday military and civilian life. This book provides a detailed historical
analysis of the men, methods, machines, and devices that forever altered the
course of aviation, military, and scientific history during the air war in the
night skies of WWII. 35 photos.

VON RICHTHOFEN: MASTER OF THE GERMAN AIR WAR
James S. Corum, C
Luftwaffe commander Wolfram von Richthofen was a brilliant master of the
tactical and operational air war and one of the key catalysts in the
resurrection of Germany’s air force. Long overshadowed in history by his cousin,
World War I’s famous “Red Baron,” von Richthofen served in seven major air
campaigns from 1936 to 1944, and as senior air commander he was always at the
center of the action. For this first full-length biography of von Richthofen,
James Corum has mined the field marshal’s extensive diaries, which provide a
detailed record of military campaigns, tactical and operational problems,
interactions with other commanders, and his assessment of methods and weaponry.
He has also drawn on interviews with former Luftwaffe members and on his
unparalleled access to von Richthofen family papers and photos. Corum reveals
how, before World War II, von Richthofen played a central role in developing and
building the Luftwaffe and such famous aircraft as the Me 109 fighter and He 111
bomber. He then delivered tactical and operational successes in the Spanish
Civil War, where he established the close air support tactics that became an
essential trademark of the German blitzkrieg. As commander of the Special Air
Division in the invasion of Poland, he demonstrated the effectiveness of massed
airpower and in 1940 helped produce a dramatic German victory in France by
providing close air support for Von Kleist’s panzer divisions as they raced to
the English Channel. Later he also led the Luftwaffe’s Second Air Fleet against
the Allied landings in Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. Providing a fully rounded
portrait, Corum also cites von Richthofen’s signal defeats in the Battle of
Britain and around Stalingrad; depicts his arrogant and ruthless tendencies; and
reveals his loyal but naïve belief in Hitler. Cutting through the myths that
have grown around von Richthofen’s life, Corum’s study fills a major gap in the
literature and offers new insight into German military culture, Hitler’s
strategic thinking, and their impact on the German way of war. Illustrated with
a few photos and maps,

LUFTWAFFE COLOURS 1935 - 1945
Michael Ullmann, C,O, revised and expanded
Much has been written about the Luftwaffe but no aspect has been more
controversial than the question of camouflage and markings of the aircraft. In
this comprehensive study, the author follows the development and use of many
colours used and establishes the links between the then standard RAL colours and
those adopted by the German Air Ministry. Using much original documentation he
reveals how and why these finishes were developed and applied to both military
and Lufthansa aircraft – in such detail that anyone with an interest in the
subject, either as an historian, model-maker or aircraft preservationist – can
recreate Luftwaffe colours with unprecedented accuracy. Supplemented by over 300
photographs, over 40 drawings and 16 pages of detailed colour aircraft profiles,
Luftwaffe Colours presents a remarkable insight into the art of WWII German
camouflage markings. This fantastic book is completely revised and updated
providing new information no dark camouflage colours and changes to aircraft
markings. An accurate colour chart is included so that anyone with an interest
in the subject can recreate Luftwaffe colours with unprecedented accuracy.

GERMAN PARATROOPS IN SCANDINAVIA: FALLSCHIRMJAGER IN DENMARK AND NORWAY APRIL -
JUNE 1940
Oscar Gonzalez, C,
The German conquest of Denmark and Norway in spring 1940 presents an interesting
study of joint strategy between ground, air, and sea forces. In this campaign,
the Germans placed great emphasis on mobility, speed, and surprise. The
Fallschirmjäger of 1940 was a well-trained, highly-motivated force, and their
participation in Operation “Weserübung” – the codename for the Wehrmacht assault
on Denmark and Norway – is this subject of this book. Among the topics discussed
are German paratroop operations (some of the first combat jumps of the war)
against the main Danish and Norwegian bridges and aerodromes, the jump on Dombås,
behind enemy lines, and also their tenacious resistance on the snow-covered
grounds of Narvik. over 160 color/bw images,

DORNIER 17 UNITS IN FOCUS
Chris Goss, S,O,
The streamlined profile of the Do17 made it instantly recognisable in its many
guises in the skies over Britain. Nick-named 'The Flying Pencil' it is best
known to the public as one of the principal Luftwaffe bombers of the Battle of
Britain and later the night Blitz, but they were also used for reconnaissance
and even as night fighters. This visual history of the Do17 and the units that
used the Dornier makes spectacular use of over 250 authentic wartime images,
many previously unpublished, to illustrate the units that used the aircraft and
the operations it flew. Extended captions, details of bases, marks of aircraft
used and code letters complete a visually stunning tribute to the Luftwaffe's
famous bomber. The stories of the men who flew it are represented by first-hand
accounts. 220 b/w photos, 8 page colour section,

JUNKERS
Ju 287: GERMANY'S FORWARD SWEPT WING BOMBER
Steven Ransom, C,O,
The extraordinary Junkers Ju 287, the first truly swept-winged,
jet-powered aircraft, took to the sky in August 1944, at a time when
Germany was suffering sustained round-the-clock bombing by the Allied
air forces. Despite such adverse development conditions, this large and
futuristic aircraft represented a remarkable accomplishment in
aeronautical design. It featured a revolutionary swept forward wing and
was built largely from scavenged components from other aircraft. The
project was considered ‘top secret’ and evaded Allied intelligence for
many months. This book is illustrated throughout by many photographs,
several previously unpublished, and contains much new and revised
information on the Ju 287 and it will be the definitive account of this
remarkable aircraft. The authors also trace the development of forward
swept-winged aircraft prior to its appearance and the aircraft’s
subsequent history in the Soviet Union and its post-war influence on
aircraft projects and designs produced in Germany. A unique and
compelling account for all aviation enthusiasts. 130 colour and mono

ORDER OF BATTLE: GERMAN LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR II
Dr Chris McNab, C, O-
Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, played a critical role in the Third Reich’s
victories in the early part of World War II, providing the airborne component of
the German forces’ irresistible Blitzkrieg (“lightning war”) tactics that swept
all armies before it from 1939 to 1942. Broken down by campaign and key battles
within each theater of war, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II
illustrates the strengths and organizational structures of the Third Reich’s air
force, building into a detailed compendium of information. Full-color order of
battle tree diagrams at Luftflotten, Gruppe, Fliegerkorps and squadron level
help the reader quickly understand how and where bomber (Kampfgeschwader),
fighter (Jagdgeschwader), dive-bomber (Stukageschwader), and reconnaissance (Aufklärungsgruppe)
units were employed. Quick reference tables provide unit strengths, aircraft
types, and base locations, while profile diagrams show typical numbers of
aircraft at squadron level. With extensive organizational diagrams, tables and
full-color campaign maps, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II is
an attractive, easy-to-use guide to the German air force of World War II. The
book is an essential reference for any serious enthusiast of air warfare in the
twentieth century.

KESSELRING'S LAST BATTLE: WAR CRIMES TRIALS AND COLD WAR POLITICS, 1945 - 1960
Kerstin Von Lingen, C,
In 1947 German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring was tried and convicted of war
crimes committed during World War II. He was held responsible for his troops
having executed nearly 9,000 Italian citizens—women, children, elderly men—in
retaliation for partisan attacks. His conviction, however, created a real
dilemma for the United States and western Europe. While some sought the harshest
punishments available for anyone who had participated in the war crimes of the
Nazi regime, others believed that the repatriation of alleged war criminals
would help secure the allegiance of a rearmed West Germany in the dangerous new
Cold War against the Soviet Union. Kerstin von Lingen’s close analysis of the
Kesselring case reveals for the first time how a network of veterans, lawyers,
and German sympathizers in Britain and America achieved the commutation of
Kesselring’s death sentence and his eventual release—reinforcing German popular
conceptions that he had been innocent all along and that the Wehrmacht had
fought a “clean war” in Italy. But von Lingen shows that Kesselring bore much
greater guilt for civilian deaths than had been proven in court—and that the war
on the southern front had been far from clean. Von Lingen weaves together
strands of the story as diverse as Winston Churchill’s ability to mobilize
support among British elites, Basil Liddell Hart’s need to be recognized as an
important military thinker, and the Cold War fears of the “Senators’ Circle” in
the United States. Through this rich narrative, she shows how international
politics shaped the trial’s proceedings and outcome—as well as the memory and
meaning of the war for German citizens—and sheds new light on the complex
interplay between the combatants’ efforts to “master the past” and the
threatening state of international relations in the early Cold War. In analyzing
the efforts to clear Kesselring’s name, von Lingen shows that the case was about
much more than the fate of one convicted individual; it also underscored the
pressure to wrap up the war crimes issue—and German guilt—in order to get on
with the business of bringing a rearmed Germany into the Western alliance.
Kesselring’s Last Battle sheds new light on the “politics of memory” by
unraveling a twisted thread in postwar history as it shows how historical truth
is sometimes sacrificed on the altar of expediency.

THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE: OPERATIONS OF THE 3RD FALLSCHIRMJAGER DIVISIONl:
DEFENCE OF THE NORTH SECTOR BETWEEN DECEMBER 1944 AND JANUARY 1945
compiled by Hans Wijers, S,O,
This book describes the action in the area southeast of Malmédy, the area
controlled during the later part of the Battle of the Bulge by elements of the
German 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division between Christmas 1944 and the end of
January 1945. This book gives a detailed overview of what happened after the
German opening attack came to a standstill, and where the German 3rd
Fallschirmjäger Division, after initial success, was trying to stop the American
counterattack that started in late January. The US units that had been in action
since the opening days of the battle, and facing a enemy determined to hold its
positions, were thrown back into battle to push the Germans back to where they
started the offensive. Likewise, the German troops, exhausted from fighting
since the first day of the battle, without proper food or clothing and receiving
relatively no replacements of equipment or men lost during the heavy fighting,
were facing an enemy similarly determined to push them back.

UNTERNEHMEN MERKUR: THE CONQUEST OF CRETE, 1941
WARS AND BATTLES SERIES, Jose Antonio, S
Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in 1941,
was unprecedented in three respects; it is considered to be the first airborne
operation in history; it was the first time the Allies made significant use of
intelligence from the deciphered German Enigma codes; and it was the first time
German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population. Beginning
on 20 May, German forces landed near the island's airports, took over the
runways, and with numerous reinforcements landing over the forthcoming days,
Crete surrendered within a week. Yet it was not without cost. German losses were
horrific, with casualties over a third of all men employed. Crete was the first
of its kind and many learned from its mistakes as well as its successes, with
even Hitler so shocked by the number of men lost that he never again authorized
this level of airborne operation. The Conquest of Crete, 1941 describes the
eleven days in combat in full detail, including accounts of Cretan
civilians—armed with only what they could gather from their houses—overcoming
the German troops all over the island. Supported by color artworks of the men
involved and their machines, along with photographs and battle maps, this is a
complete account of one of World War II's most devastating operations. 175

SKY MY KINGDOM: MEMOIRS OF THE FAMOUS GERMAN WWII TEST PILOT
Hanna Reitsch, C,
The Sky My Kingdom is the fascinating autobiography of the famous World War test
pilot - Hanna Reitsch (March 29, 1912 - August 24, 1979). As the war progressed,
Reitsch was invited to fly many of Germany's latest (and increasingly desperate)
designs, including the rocket-propelled Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, and several
larger bombers on which she tested various mechanisms for cutting barrage
balloon cables. After crashing on her fifth Me 163 flight, she was badly injured
but insisted on writing her report before falling unconscious and spending five
months in hospital. Eventually she became Adolf Hitler's favorite pilot. Reitsch
was one of only two women awarded the Iron Cross First Class during World War
II, and the only woman awarded the Luftwaffe Combined Pilot and Observer Badge
with Diamonds. She survived many accidents and was badly injured several times.
In the last days of the war Reitsch was asked to fly her companion,
Colonel-General Robert Ritter von Greim, into Berlin to meet with Hitler. The
city was already surrounded by Red Army troops who had made significant progress
into the downtown area when they arrived on the 27th April, landing on a city
street, and traveled to the Führerbunker. The aircraft she used was the justly
famous Fieseler Storch already well known for the exploit that rescued
Mussolini, only adding to the legend of both Reitsch and that aircraft. She is
said to have overheard Hitler laying out plans for Nazi commanders to join
together in mass suicide when it was obvious that the war was over. She also
hoped to fly out propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels' six children, who had been
staying in the bunker since April 22 with their parents, but neither Joseph nor
Magda Goebbels would allow it. She escaped Berlin on 29th April by flying out
through heavy Russian anti-aircraft fire. She was a devoted and idealistic Nazi,
who adored Adolf Hitler and refused to believe the reports of concentration
camps and torture. Not until much later would she say that she had been
"disgusted" by what she witnessed in the Third Reich. She was held for 18 months
by the American military after the war, she was interrogated and subsequently
released. After the war German citizens were forbidden from flying, except,
after a few years, in gliders. In 1952 Reitsch won third place in the world
gliding championship in Spain (and was the only woman who competed). She
continued to break records including the women's altitude record (6848 meters)
and became German champion in 1955.

LAST DAYS OF THE LUFTWAFFE: GERMAN LUFTWAFFE COMBAT UNITS 1944 - 1945
Manfred Griehl, C
The end of the Second World War in Europe was an epoch of complete social,
cultural and technological upheaval. In the realm of military and aviation
history this period was revolutionary. The eclipse of the piston-engine, and the
introduction of electronic detection equipment, rockets and airborne weapons in
previously unknown quantities changed the face of the air war and paved the way
for post-war developments in aviation technology. Many details of this crucial
phase of the war remained hidden for many years in top-secret files, but in this
fascinating new history Manfred Griehl makes use of recently declassified
sources, alongside his own vast collection of photographs, to provide a fresh
look at the story of the Luftwaffe. Among the many aspects he covers are the new
models of Bf 109 and Fw 190; the Me 262 jet plane; the establishment of He 162
squadrons; Stukas and Fw 190 fighter-bomber operations on the Eastern Front; Me
262 Blitzbombers in the West, the recruitment of 1928-born Hitler Youth into the
two hundred glider schools; the increasing importance of remote-controlled
air-to-air rockets; and the development of heavy bombs, remote-controlled bombs,
‘atom bombs’ and Germany's chemical and bacteriological arsenal. Packed full of
fascinating revelations – such as the existence of the real-life Luftwaffe
kamikaze squadron – this meticulously researched and fully illustrated book will
be of interest to historian and enthusiast alike. More than 180 b/w photos, 20

FIRST JET PILOT: THE STORY OF GERMAN TEST PILOT ERICH WARSITZ
Lutz Warsitz, C
On 27 August 1939, Flugkapitan Erich Warsitz became the first man to fly a jet
aircraft, the Heinkel He 178 and in June of the same year he flew the first
liquid-fuel rocket aircraft, the Heinkel He 176. His legendary flying skills
enabled him to assist the pioneering German aircraft and engine design teams
that included Wernher von Braun and Ernst Heinkel. He repeatedly risked his life
extending the frontiers of aviation in speed, altitude and technology and
survived many life-threatening incidents. This book is written by Erich’s son
who has used his father’s copious notes and log books that explain vividly the
then halcyon days of German aviation history. Warsitz was feted by the Reich’s
senior military figures such as Milch, Udet and Lucht and even Hitler keenly
followed his experimental flying. Little is known of this pioneer period because
of the strict secrecy which shrouded the whole project – it is a fascinating
story that tells of the birth of the jet age and flight as we know it today. The
book includes many unseen photographs and diagrams. Illustrated throughout,

IN THE SKIES OF FRANCE: A CHRONICLE OF JG2 "RICHTHOFEN", VOLUME ONE 1934 - 1940
Erik Mombeek, C,O,
It has taken more than 60 years for this first detailed history of the second
fighter wing of the Luftwaffe to appear, a chronicle of Jagdgeschwader 2.
Conducting operations principally over France and the Channel, JG 2 was destined
to become one of the most celebrated of German fighter units, accorded extensive
coverage by the propaganda services of the Reich. Awarded the honour title "Richthofen"
as early as 1935, JG 2 spearheaded the campaign in the West and the assault
against England in the Battle of Britain. The unit remained in France when the
majority of German fighter units were dispatched eastwards for the invasion of
Russia during the spring of 1941. Tasked with defending the airspace of
Brittany, Normandy and much of Picardy along the French Channel coastline, JG 2
constituted a bulwark against the incursions of the RAF and USAF. Despite the
unit's heavy losses sustained during WW II, the authors managed to locate around
one hundred JG 2 veterans and their personal accounts and photographs bring this
history vividly to life and imbue it with a human dimension which many will find
moving. This first volume of the history of JG 2 covers the early years of the
unit from its origins to the turn of the year 1940/1941.

STORMING THE BOMBERS: A CHRONICLE OF JG 4 THE LUFTWAFFE'S 4TH FIGHTER WING
VOLUME 1: 1042 - 1944
Erik Mombeek, C,O,
The fourth fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was initially established during 1942
and committed to operations in defence of the Rumanian oil fields during 1943.
I./JG 4 first saw action in combat against a strike force of B-24 Liberators
dispatched on the celebrated low level attack against Ploesti on 1 August 1943,
Operation “Tidal Wave”. JG 4 was subsequently deployed in the bitterly fought
German defensive campaign on the Italian peninsula during the first half of
1944, prior to being shifted to the Normandy invasion front and then falling
back to the frontiers of the Reich in September that year. It was during the
summer of 1944 that JG 4 underwent considerable reinforcement with two new
Gruppen swelling its ranks. The most effective of these was II. (Sturm)/JG 4, a
so-called “Storm” or "assault" wing, built up around a hard core of former
Sturmstaffel 1 pilots and an intake of young daredevil volunteers. Committed
against the massive USAF bomber fleets pounding the Reich, these German
"kamikaze" fighters, as some saw them, were deployed to bring down the American
bombers by any means, including ramming if necessary. Despite the appalling
losses sustained by JG 4 during WW II, the author managed to locate around one
hundred JG 4 and Sturmstaffel 1 veterans and their personal accounts and
photographs bring this history vividly to life and imbue it with a human
dimension which many will find moving. The first volume of this two part history
covers the unit’s establishment, deployments and combat actions through to
Autumn 1944, providing for the first time in English a day-by-day,
mission-by-mission study of the Luftwaffe’s 4th fighter wing,

PRINCES OF DARKNESS: THE LIVES OF LUFTWAFFE NIGHT FIGTHER ACES HEINRICH PRINZ ZU
SAYN-WITTGENSTEIN AND EGMONT PRINZ ZUR LIPPE-WEISSENFELD
Claire Rose Knott, C
Princes of Darkness is a unique illustrated account of the careers of Heinrich
Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Egmont Prince zur Lippe-Weissenfeld - two
aristocrats who served with the Luftwaffe's night fighter force and whose lives
were often interconnected. The book is the result of many years research on the
part of its author, Claire Rose Knott, who has been granted unprecedented access
to never before published diary notes, personal correspondence, logbooks, and
family photographs. The work also benefits from research in archival resources,
technical data and recollections supplied by the Princes’ night fighter
contemporaries. The text contains firsthand accounts by family, friends and
fellow officers who offer unique accounts of the ambition, intensity and actions
of the leading characters in time of war. Over the years, the Princes have
courted controversy with several conspiracy theories regarding their deaths. The
plausibility of such theories when viewed against their aristocratic family
backgrounds and placed against the backdrop of intense social upheaval under the
Nazi regime, are investigated here. Prince Heinrich Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was the
third highest scoring night fighter ace in the Luftwaffe who served from
mid-1941 until his death in 1944. He was killed when his aircraft was hit by
return fire from a bomber or by an RAF nightfighter. Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein baled
out but was killed by the impact of landing. His victory score at that time of
his death was 83 – 29 in the East and 54 in the West. Prince Egmont zur
Lippe-Weissenfeld, an Austrian, started his career as a daylight fighter pilot,
and became a nightfighter when serving under the famous Helmut Lent as
Staffelkapitän. He is accredited with 51 aerial victories while flying – mainly
the Messerschmitt Bf 110 – and is ranked 21st among the German night fighter
aces. He was killed on 3 March 1944 when his Bf 110 clipped the ground and
crashed during a flight over the Ardennes. The text is supported by rare and
fascinating photographs of the pilots’ aircraft, weaponry (including the
upward-firing ‘Jazz Music’ twin cannon) and radar equipment as well as others in
their squadrons, together with commissioned color artwork of Messerschmitt Bf
110 and Junkers Ju 88 night fighters. 259 mono and color photographs plus color

LUFTWAFFE MARITIME AIRCRAFT & UNITS
Adam Thompson, S,O,
As a companion to the successful Luftwaffe Colours ‘Sea Eagles’ titles, this
bright new book offers the reader a more detailed and varied study of the
maritime aircraft and operations conducted by the Luftwaffe against the Allies
in World War 2. The Luftwaffe committed a wide range of aircraft to such
operations from coastal reconnaissance, with shorter-range and shipboard patrol
floatplanes, to long-range U-boat liaison and transports; for example, the Arado
Ar 196 A, Dornier Do 18 and Do 24, Blohm und Voss Ha 138, Heinkel He 115,
Junkers Ju 52, the enormous Blohm und Voss 222 Wiking flying boat, and the
equally impressive Blohm und Voss 238 – the heaviest aircraft to have flown in
the world. The operations of the extensive force included ‘shadowing’ and
long-range protection for U-boats under the auspices of the ‘Fliegerführer
Atlantik’, shipboard operations assigned to the German capital ships,
mine-laying, air-sea rescue, torpedo-bombing and transport. Illustrations: c235

Hermann Buchner, S
Hermann Buchner was one of the rare bomber pilots who also became a fighter
pilot. The author, a Luftwaffe NCO pilot and Knight’s Cross holder, gives a
riveting account of his training with the pre-war Austrian air force,
instructing with the Luftwaffe, and the terrifying ground-attack operations on
the Eastern Front trying to stop the Russian mincing machine.Despite being shot
down twice, Buchner himself targeted Il2s, Yak 9s, and a Boston bomber who fell
victim to his eagle eye. Later tasked with opposing the Allied daylight bombing
raids into deepest Germany, Buchner labored to protect his homeland. Serving
alongside many well-known aces and sometimes taking off from his home airfield
while under Soviet shellfire, he paints a picture of a man surviving against
incredible odds, who became one of the elite with JG7 and learned that the
important thing with the Me262 was to land near a convenient foxhole.
Supplemented by more than 140 photographs, mostly from the author’s personal
collection, along with color profiles of his aircraft and opponents, Stormbird
presents a remarkable insight into the life of a Luftwaffe pilot in WWII. 140 b/w

LUFTWAFFE HIT AND RUN RAIDERS: NOCTURNAL FIGHTER-BOMBER OPERATIONS OVER THE
WESTERN FRONT, 1943-1945
Chris Goss, S,O,
In 1940 the Luftwaffe fitted bombs to their Messerschmitt 109s and Messerschmitt
110s, thus creating the Jagdbomber or Jabo. Jabos played a key role in the
Battle of Britain, but then appeared to be forgotten until early 1942 when two
fighter Staffeln were formed on the Western Front and carried out deadly
lightning low-level hit and run attacks in southern Britain. Despite the
relative successes of these two units, they were combined and re-designated
Schenellkampfgeschwader 10 or SKG 10 in the spring of 1943. With many rare and
previously unpublished photographs of both the crews and aircraft, this
impressive book tells the story of the famous nocturnal Jabo attacks carried out
by I/SKG 10 and its subsequent designations. Fully illustrated throughout, it
draws upon genuine Allied combat reports, Luftwaffe mission reports and the
expert post war analysis carried out by its highly decorated commander, Major
Kurt Dahlmann. This masterful study belongs in the library of every serious
military historian and modeller.

HEINKEL HE 162 VOLKSJAGER FROM DRAWING BOARD TO DESTRUCTION
Robert Forsyth, C,O,
The He 162 represented an unprecedented aeronautical and engineering
achievement. Embracing revolutionary jet engine technology, the aircraft went
from drawing board to prototype flight in just three months, at a time when Nazi
Germany was on the brink of defeat. For the first time, this book will draw on
the previously unused Heinkel company papers which offer a unique insight into
the workings of the Nazi production system in the late-war period. The authors
have provided the whole history of the so-called Volksjäger ('People's Fighter')
project. From inception in September 1944 (with the competing Arado, Blohm und
Voss and Focke-Wulf projects), through Heinkel’s extraordinary manufacturing
achievements between October 1944 and February 1945, to the aircraft’s
operational deployment with Jagdgeschwader 1, the various planned variants and
weapons systems and British and American testing of the machine in late 1945 the
book provides fantastic in-depth coverage, supported by a wealth of previously

James Miller, S,O,
Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen stands as the most famous fighter pilot of
all time. The image of Richthofen and his all-red Fokker triplane are ubiquitous
symbols of German aerial might. From the outset he set and achieved his goals
with a focus and determination that overcame initial shortcomings, propelling
him from an unknown two-seater pilot into a brilliant airman, tactician, leader,
mentor, hero and, ultimately, a martyr of Germany. In this limited run and
outstanding new study, James Miller focuses not only on Richthofens
stick-and-rudder abilities but also the aircraft with which he prosecuted war.
Also Richthofes epic battle with Hawker, the events of his July 1917 wounding,
his rivalry with Voss, and several inaccurate yet persistent myths are examined
in unprecedented detail, all of which are augmented by 90 rare photographs,

HITLER'S MIRACLE WEAPONS FROM THE AMERICA ROCKET TO AN ORBITAL STAITION VOLUME
3: GERMANY'S EFFORTS TO DEVELOP INTERCONTINENTAL WEAOPNS AND THE FIRST SPACE
PROGRAMME
Friedrich Georg, C,O,
The third volume in this now-established series expand its coverage to examine
Nazi Germany's efforts to develop intercontinental weapons and nothing short of
a space program. The author begins by examining whether the V2 rocket was the
final development produced by Hitler. He then proceeds to examine, in great
detail, Germany's efforts to develop what was called the 'America Rocket', an
intercontinental weapon. Much evidence is produced to suggest that planning and
preparation were underway for an attempted intercontinental rocket launch
against New York at war's end. A final section of the book examines further
German rocketry projects that were on the drawing board by the end of the war,
including sophisticated orbital craft. The text is supported by a selection of
photographs and diagrams, as well as 16 superb pages of color artwork, including
profiles, computer-generated images of drawing board designs, and pictures of
the author's own models. All fine and dandy but if you ask me, once again Helion
publishers overpriced their book. 16 pages color plates, 75 color & b/w photos,
diagrams, docs, this book has 109 numbered pages, not the 144 announced by the
publishers, they lowered the page count, kept the price high.

LUFTWAFFE EAGLE FROM THE ME 109 TO THE ME 262
Walter Schuck, C,O,
Luftwaffe pilot Walter Schuck flew the Me109 in the Arctic Sea fighter squadrons
becoming the Russian air force’s feared enemy in the far north. Awarded the
Knights Cross in April 1944 he claimed his 100th kill in June of that year, then
barely 48 hours later shot down 12 aircraft in one day - a record never achieved
by any other Arctic Sea pilot. His mastery continued when in March 1945 he
joined Jagdgeschwader 7, newly equipped with Me262 jet fighters and shot down
two Allied fighters on his first operation. Taking command of the third Staffel
of JG 7 his success in the aerial theatre was unsurpassed when he brought down
four B-17 bombers while on a transit flight. Shortly afterwards, meeting one of
the bombers' escort fighters in combat, his fuel system exploded and he had to
bail out. Walter Schuck's war was over, after over 500 front line sorties and
206 confirmed kills. Celebrated by his colleagues for his skill, courage, sheer
guts and chivalry including the deep feelings for those he shot down, he earned
the nickname "Adler der Tundra" or "Northern Knight". In this autobiography, the
author tells his story simply, conveying his impressions of life, the rationale
of the Lufwaffe and the everyday life of a military man in those times,
including the difficulties and hardships of the war in the Arctic Seas. In a
gripping narrative, the author helps us to understand why he and his colleagues
were prepared to lay down their lives for their people, and their country. Rich
in detail and facts and supplemented by photographs from his personal collection
and colour aircraft profiles, Walter Schuck helps us to put the past into
context, painting a unique picture of life in the Luftwaffe during the times of
the Third Reich.

COURAGE ALONE: THE ITALIAN AIR FORCE 1940-1943
Chris Dunning, C,O, Completely revised edition
Derided by Allied propaganda which made it out to be an air force equipped
solely with elderly biplanes, ineffective in attack or always in retreat, the
Regia Aeronautica was overshadowed by its more ruthless Axis partner, the
Luftwaffe. Using research from a mass of original documentation, including
personal accounts and combat diaries, the author takes an objective view and
shows that the men who flew the Macchis, Fiats and Savoias were no less skilled
or determined than their opponents. Area commands and theatres are discussed
together with squadron allocations, anti-shipping operations, aircrew and
details of the top fighter aces. Comprehensive tables provide information on
aircraft equipment, squadron allocation and unit histories. Coupled with
drawings from original aircraft handbooks, almost 250 photographs and over 100
colour profiles and unit badges, Courage Alone provides a detailed reference
source for historians, modellers and enthusiasts alike.

INTO HELL: GERMAN PARATROOPERS IN WORLD WAR II
Franz Kurowski, C,
As a crucial part of the blitzkrieg that swept across Western Europe in the
spring of 1940, German paratroopers made combat drops in Denmark and Norway and
then won a brilliant victory in their assault on the Belgian fortress of
Eben-Emael. Their most famous airborne operation came in Crete in 1941 when they
captured the island but with such high casualties that Hitler would not allow
another major drop. Also organized as motorized infantry for ground attacks, the
paratroopers saw action at Monte Cassino in Italy, in Normandy, and on the
Eastern Front. 89 b/w photos, 33 maps

SEA PLANES OF THE LEGION CONDOR
Rafael Lopez, C
Among the different Luftwaffe units that formed the Legion Condor, one in
particular stands out for its important Naval Air contribution: the
Aufklärungsstaffel See/88 (AS./88 or the Maritime Reconnaissance Squadron),
although it was also officially designated the Seefliegerstaffel AS./88 or Naval
Air Squadron AS./88. AS./88 Squadron employed the following aircraft during the
Spanish campaign: Heinkel He 59 bomber, torpedo and reconnaissance seaplanes; He
60 close reconnaissance/bomber seaplanes; He 115 A-0 reconnaissance/torpedo
seaplanes; and float-fitted Junkers Ju 52s. Presented here are previously
unpublished aspects regarding the operations and war service of both the
personnel and aircraft of AS./88, which, during a period of three years,
participated directly in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 on the Nationalist

FOREIGN PLANES IN THE SERVICE OF THE LUFTWAFFE
Jean-Louis Roba, C,
No airforce in the Second World War would make more use of captured planes than
the Luftwaffe. With this in mind, Jean-Louis Roba has undergone a considerable
amount of work in tracking down hundreds of aircraft used by the Luftwaffe and
illustrating their uses, careers and eventual fates. The book examines the full
history of foreign planes in the Luftwaffe, from its inception in the prewar
years to the end of the Second World War. More than just an account of the
Luftwaffe’s use of captured aircraft, the book debunks myths about how prepared
the Germans were for war in 1939, and shows how important even such an
unreliable source of supplies as captured planes would become to the Luftwaffe.
Translated into English for the first time, Roba’s investigative work is
supported by over a hundred pictures of the planes themselves, and gives a rare
opportunity to see British and American planes repainted in German colors and
symbols. 100+ b/w integrated photos.

MESSERSCHMITT ME 110 FROM 1939 TO 1945: MESSERSCHMITT'S TWIN-ENGINED FIGHTERS BF
110, ME 210 AND 410
Dominique Breffort, S,
The Messerschmitt Bf 110, was designed in the middle of the thirties. After a
relatively convincing start in Poland in September 1939, the performance of the
Zerstörer (destroyer) units, declined rapidly with heavy losses, so much so that
at the end of the Battle of Britain it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110s from
service and cease production. After the failure of its designated successor, the
Me 210, the Bf 110 started a second career which was indeed infinitely more
glorious since it scored more kills not only than any other Luftwaffe
night-fighter but also more than all the aircraft of this type in all the air
forces fighting in World War Two…

HEINKEL HE 162 VOLKSJAGER: LAST-DITCH EFFORT BY THE LUFTWAFFE
Peter Muller, C,O,
The primary objective of this source edition is to provide readers with
original documents, allowing them to form their own impression of the
development, manufacture and operation of the Heinkel He 162. By linking
this accumulated data with the historical situation of those times, we
hope to have facilitated a more objective assessment of the "Volksjäger"
project. For the purposes of this book, around 200 file documents were
selected from a multitude of material on the Heinkel He 162 and
reproduced in their original state. Complementing them are some 140
photographs, some of them unpublished hitherto, 50 scale drawings, 30
color plates and innumerable citations from contemporary documents,
teleprints, orders, lectures, reviews and intelligence reports. To make
orientation easy, documents and illustrations are arranged in chapters
that follow the historic pass off: Project, development of the Heinkel
He 162, manufacturing of the "Volksjaeger", in action within the
Luftwaffe and allied war booty are the most important topics. For the
first time we achieved to break down the production and delivery numbers
of the Heinkel He 162. Most of the original documents are not
translated, but discussed in the text. A German-English glossary helps
to understand the content of those original files. Rounding off the
publication is a comprehensive annex giving details of propulsion units,
camouflage schemes, armament, the cockpit, plus the various versions of
the Heinkel He 162. An index of individuals, place names and subjects
and a list of sources and literature, both covering several pages,
enables to work scientifically with our Source Edition Heinkel He 162 "Volksjaeger":

AIR WAR OVER SPAIN: AVIATORS, AIRCRAFT AND AIR UNITS OF THE NATIONALIST
AND REPUBLICAN AIR FORCES 1936-1939
Rafael Lopez, S,O
The air campaigns fought during the Spanish Civil War prompted important
technical and tactical developments for all parties – from the actual
deployment of air power through to communications. The small and largely
obsolescent Spanish Air Force of 1936 grew into an effective fighting
arm which by 1937 had become a significant force, thanks, in part, to
German and Italian support. The Nationalists fielded Heinkel, Fiat and
Messerschmitt fighters and Heinkel, Caproni, Savoia-Marchetti, Junkers
and Dornier bombers. These forces entered into a grinding battle of
attrition over the less-organised but fiercely motivated Republican air
arm over Aragon, the Jarama, and Madrid Fronts and later over Brunete,
Belchite, and the final campaign over the Ebro late in 1938. The
Republicans were equipped with Soviet-built Polikarpov, Nieuport, Hawker
and Dewoitine fighters and Potez and Tupolev bombers. These aircraft
were often colourful and adorned with vivid markings, and these are
beautifully illustrated in this new volume provides a complete analysis
of every aspect of the air campaigns fought during the Spanish Civil
War. Packed with little-known facts, rare photographs and a variety of
colour artworks, this book belongs on the shelf of every serious
aviation enthusiast! 215 illustrations,

GERMAN GLIDERS IN WORLD WAR II: LUFTWAFFE GLIDERS AND THEIR POWERED
VARIANTS
Heinz Mankau, C,O,
Gliders formed a special category of aircraft within the Luftwaffe.
While other aircraft types were used for many years, as a rule gliders
were conceived for short service lives, in some cases just a single
mission. The purpose of the glider, most of which were built using the
simplest materials, was to deposit soldiers and materiel behind enemy
lines undetected. In this book the various types used by the Luftwaffe
in World War II, and their development are described in detail – from
military gliders for a few soldiers to large-capacity gliders capable of
transporting tanks. over 450 bw images,

HERMANN GORING FIGHTER ACE: THE WORLD WAR I CAREER OF GERMANY'S MOST INFMAOUS
AIRMAN
Peter Kilduff, C
'Hermann Göring – Fighter Ace' is the first in-depth look at Göring’s role as a
military flyer and air combat leader from 1914 through the end of The Great War,
and how those experiences shaped the personality that came to the world’s
attention in 1939. At the outset of the First World War, Göring was eager to
prove his value to his fatherland in initial skirmishes with French troops. When
struck by severe rheumatoid arthritis in September 1914, the twenty-one-year-old
officer’s burning ambition and ego could not tolerate being sidelined and the
following month he forced himself out of a sick bed to begin a new career as an
aviation observer. Göring went on to become a fighter pilot with twenty-two
downed enemy aircraft to his credit, the last wartime commander of the Red
Baron’s own fighter wing, Jagdgeschwader Richthofen, and recipient of a row of
prestigious medals including Prussia’s highest bravery award, the Pour le Mérite.
Peter Kilduff has produced a landmark volume based on extensive research into
Göring’s early military records and thousands of German and Allied documents to
put the neophyte airman’s life and events into perspective. Among other
resources, Kilduff drew on Göring’s own combat reports and related writings.
Illustrated with over eighty drawings and photographs, including many from
Goring’s private collection and never before published, Herman Göring – Fighter
Ace is a tour de force of historical material covering the early combat career
of one of the Twentieth Century’s most infamous military figures.
